»island people« is a new band project consisting of mastering engineer conor dalton, grammy award winning producer david donaldson, musician and DJ graeme reedie and guitarist ian »chippy« maclennan. on their first self-titled record, they present their collaborative work that evolved over the past three years.
 
being based in different cities, namely berlin and glasgow, files had to be exchanged back and forth between the band members in order to create tracks. for their delicate sound structures, field recordings and other sound sources were heavily processed and rendered unrecognizable. layer after layer, the tracks came into being quite naturally, not only reflecting their continuous way of working, but also incorporating their different and individual backgrounds: »during the whole creation of the album, we never realized our actions were quickly leading us into forming »island people«, we were too busy having fun, making music and sharing ideas.«
 
the result of their collaboration is a timeless music that is as open as a natural phenomenon, developing a certain feeling of euphoria over time. all in all, »island people« is a pure listening record in the best tradition of ambient.

Wælder are moving between ambient, industrial and pop. Their rhythms and soundscapes of voices, obscure samples and distorted field-recordings build spaces of barren material and soft ground, which teem and crawl - strange and harmonious. To present their music live, Wælder are mixing analogue and digital effects with guitar, synthesizers, vocals and loops. Rhythms and atmospheres blur, dissolve and re-assemble. Their live shows are often framed by visuals, generated in collaboration with various visual artists.

Founded 2013 in Vienna by Moritz Nahold and Jan Preißler, Wælder has since played numerous concerts, collaborated with various artists and composed music for theatre, film and installations. In addition to their EPs 'Firn' and '&' they released 'Anachronie' in 2015 on the label Kreismusik. Wælder’s second album 'Non Places' will be released on 26.01.2018 via Denovali Records.

Non Places was recorded and produced in different locations at different times in Vienna and Berlin. Wælder experimented independently with their tracks, later reassembling them over the internet. The eight pieces tell this process and at the same time create an independent perspective on the process of their creation. A church organ, detuned in manuals and registers, a vacuum cleaner embedded in the sound of a piano, and precisely programmed patterns of electronic devices are just a few of the elements found on the album. The name Non Places comes from the eponymous publication Non-Lieux (Eng. non-places) by the French anthropologist Marc Augé. By means of the happenings in the specific space of Vienna / Berlin and the exchange about the nonspecific space of the Internet, the countless server rooms crossed by shared audio data have been interpreted as monofunctional places, without relation and history. If music and the process of creation are two different places, then Non Places is the gap-bridging perspective. What happens and sounds is an experiment of space, body, form and purpose.

Having recently signed to FatCat’s 130701 imprint, and following closely on from Deutsche Gramophon’s release of Jóhann Jóhannsson’s ‘Last and First Men’ project which Yair co-composed, Yair Elazar Glotman & Mats Erlandsson’s sophomore album ‘Emanate’ is a powerful and stunningly executed extended duration work that utilises a fantastic ensemble cast and continues to explore their ideas of a 'displaced sound’ - combining electronic and acoustic sound sources through both analogue and digital means to create an ambiguous composite work, a music that sounds neither clearly electronic or acoustic, existing instead in some in-between space.

In many ways, the idea of a longform music is unsuited to and out of phase with our times. And yet, there is recent evidence of a reaction against this – witness the rise of the practise of mindfulness and the cultural elements of a ‘slow living’ movement; the huge success of Max Richter’s marathon 'Sleep’ project; and the emergence of an expansive musical niche that draws from drone, electroacoustic and classical traditions and prioritises a more immersive, durational sound worlds - see artists like Kali Malone, Ellen Arkbro, Clarice Jensen, Abul Mogard, William Basinski, Claire M Singer, and labels like Longform Editions and XKatedral. Music here is intended to function not as ambient backdrop to other activities but as a deep listening, intensive immersion.

Aligned with these approaches, Glotman & Erlandsson’s work is suffused with a chromatic density and a tendency towards an edgy darkness that puts it closer to Hildur Guðnadóttir’s ‘Chernobyl’ score or Jóhannsson’s ‘The Miner’s Hymns’. It shares that same brassy, bass heavy weight and glowering, simmering sense of tension as well as a similar, sliding feeling of instability. Its authors cite the influence of  Renaissance vocal polyphony; Giacinto Scelsi’s ‘Pranam II’; György Ligeti’s 1967 piece ‘Lontano’ (heard on the soundtrack to Kubrick’s ‘The Shining’ and Scorcese’s ‘Shutter Island’); as well as American composer Ingram Marshall, and Iceland’s Valgier Sigurdsson. Gorgeously recorded, beautifully focused and measured throughout, ‘Emanate’ is a texturally rich, deep spectrum exploration that flows and unfolds almost seamlessly throughout its fifty-minute span to create an energy field which feels simultaneously static and yet continually shifting.
