Don't Stop Believin' by Journey performed by Nation One.

Today's action took place at a new venue! At least, new to those of you who had tuned in before! I can't say in too familiar with the place acoustically. I've only ever mixed a handful of times, but nonetheless,  it did not pose too big of the challenge. While I am happy with the mix I gave in the venue, I was not entirely satisfied with how the recording sounds. The drums sounded pretty sweet live, but listening back to the recording, the drums kinda flew away simply because I did not need much drums in the overall mix. I would say that the drummer today was exceptional! There was no need for much drums in the live mix because he hits the drums so loudly - all while not sacrificing dynamics. Mixing his playing live was such a breeze. Of course, all these are literally just excuses. Always working and learning to be better. Let me know in the comments on how I can improve in the future!

Overall, great and amazing sounding live band. I heard that tonight may be their final performance on that stage and I'm honored to be a part of their farewell gig at Timbre+ One-North.

Set Fire to the Rain by Adele performed by Rock Revival!

its been a while since I've posted a recording but Im glad to be posting again! As usual, its always an occasion at Timbre+ Eastside every Sunday evening and it'll be such a waste not to record the amazing performance, brought to you by Rock Revival! There is so much to love about this band! The vocalist did so great despite feeling under the weather with a sore throat. Also check out the blazing fast guitar solo that elevated an already-amazing song and the whole vibe was pretty great!

Hui Fut Tin Hung by Beyond performed by Rock Revival, but this time featuring a singer from the audience!

This band is not only versatile in the type of rock they play, but also in the language they sing in! Not opposed to having fun on stage, they included a loyal member of the audience, Mr Mohd Noor Ismail.
Many have tried but it is almost impossible to masterfully bring out the spirit of this legendary Cantonese song. That said, nothing is ever too difficult for Rock Revival - Just listen to the crowd! 

Mixed and recorded on a Behringer X32. Not sure where that horrendous buzzing is coming from but I could not - for the life of me - figure out where its coming from so i just accepted it.

After a short hiatus from uploading because I had zero time in between doing shows. I've been setting up for Kpop performers such as ITZY and MAMAMOO and now getting ready for Conan Gray's concert tomorrow! Anyways, I decided to record and upload last night's performance from Rock Revival. While their performance was great as always, I struggled to mix it right. Perhaps I might be tired? But really, there were a few things that were less than ideal. The vocal lines were coming in EXTREMELY hot (padded by -10db) and next to everything was clipping. I had to actually fight my faders to push the monitors for the vocalist to hear right at the point of feedback because there was zero headroom. Wasn't sure what happened in  the past couple of weeks but it feels as though I have less and less control of gain of everything. On stage, there were also a couple of things that were there but now missing - sonically speaking - and I had to compensate in the mix, hence the almost overbearing bass. Drums would be forever pushed to the back in the mix because it sounds amazing and very very loud live. Whatever it is,  I don't wish to make excuses for bad mixes because ultimately, Its my job to make music sound great. I hope I figure out what exactly is causing this because the customers deserve a great mix. That said, Its nobody's fault that this is an issue, all the other engineers are trying their best too with these issues and my heads are doing everything they can. Sometimes, these things just happen.

I Hate Myself For Loving You by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts Performed by Rock Revival

I'm gonna be honest, I really don't know how to further improve the quality of the recordings. I have experimented on quite a couple of things to improve the quality of my mixes in the venue, which is what you are hearing now! The Recording always suffers :(

The main problem of this stage is that there is one monitor that is almost as old as me that LOVES to feedback due to years of being overdriven, however, with some EQ trickery, I managed to tame it just a bit, as such, giving me more wiggle room for increased gain. Previously, the vocalists struggled to hear themselves - believe me, I was sending them plenty of themselves on the console but the speakers could not deliver. You still can hear the occasional feedback.

Another problem that I have found in in this mix (and most of my mixes generally) is that I may have given the guitars and keys a little bit too much space and dynamic range. 

I tried to improve the overall clarity of the vocalist. I tried my very best to keep the vocals it its own spectrum and upped the compression ever so slightly. This worked wonderfully in the venue because of that increased gain!

Last good thing about today's sets was that we no longer have overbearing bass!

As always, mixed and recorded on a Behringer X32. Not sure where that horrendous buzzing is coming from but I could not - for the life of me - figure out where its coming from so I just accepted it.

Sweet Child O'Mine by Guns & Roses Performed by Rock Revival

While one of the main focus of this song is the guitar, it really is overpowering in this recording. It disappears during the verses but it just takes over everything everywhere else. I'll take note of that in future mixes. I don't even know where to begin with how wide the keys are

Called in to sub for a fellow engineer who couldn't make it to work this evening. At first, I was bummed out that I did not get the opportunity to mix for my friend's band as they are residents at this bar on Saturdays, however, the moment this substitute band, Blessings For A Good Day, played their very first song of their first set (which was this), I was blown away - PROPERLY Blown away. 

I have been mixing for quite a while and it is rare to see bands genuinely look like they're having fun on stage. This was one of those rare bands. Their joy was infectious throughout their time on stage so much so that they pretty much revived a seemingly dead hawker centre. The crowd went INSANE. Them sneaking licks and random off beat syncos were a massive treat to other fellow musicians watching as well.

It was a pleasure mixing for them!

ALSO YES I LEFT THE DELAY ON AT THE VERY START. FORGIVE ME.
