More than any other composer, Beethoven's most popular works suffer the indignity of nicknames that he never approved. Some are mawkish and simplistic (the "Moonlight" and "Spring" Sonatas), while others seem at least moderately appropriate if superficial (the "Choral" Symphony has a chorus, the "Harp" Quartet has pizzicato passages). A few merely serve to perpetuate the name of their dedicatee (the "Waldstein" and "Kreutzer" Sonatas). 

In sending his final piano concerto to his publisher, Beethoven clearly admonished: "The Concerto will be dedicated to the Archduke Rudolph and has nothing in the title but Grand Concerto dedicated to Hs. Imp. Highness the Archduke Rudolph." And yet, at least in English-speaking countries, we call it the "Emperor," a label ascribed to Johann Baptist Cramer, a London-based pianist, composer and publisher who befriended and influenced Beethoven, and who presumably attached the title for marketing purposes. (A tale is that at the Vienna premiere a French soldier cried out "C'est l'empereur!" – so much for concert decorum! 

Yet a tribute to Napoleon seems dubious, given that Beethoven had renunciated Bonaparte, having gone so far as to have angrily revoked his initial dedication of the "Eroica" Symphony.) Even so, some commentators find the "Emperor" tag highly appropriate. Thus Chris Nelson asserts that the music is unquestionably imperious, regal and grandiose; "with its warlike rhythms, victory motifs, thrusting melodies and affirmative character" Alfred Einstein credited it as "the apotheosis of the military concept" in Beethoven's music; and for Irving Kolodin it "conjures up imperious force, regal power, lordly disdain for small ways of thought or easy solutions of technical difficulties.

History of creation

If there are difficulties regarding another most popular work of Beethoven's bagatelle "Fur Elise", when trying to find out who exactly it was dedicated to, then everything is extremely simple. Piano Sonata No14 in C-sharp minor, written in 1800-1801, was dedicated to Giulietta Guicciardi. The maestro was in love with her and dreamed of marriage.
It is worth noting that during this period the composer began to increasingly feel hearing impairment, but was still popular in Vienna and continued to give lessons in aristocratic circles. For the first time about this girl, his student, “who loves me and is loved by me,” he wrote in November 1801 to Franz Wegeler. The 17-year-old Countess Juliette Guicciardi and Beethoven met at the end of 1800. Beethoven taught her the art of music, and did not even take money for it. In gratitude, the girl embroidered shirts for him. It seemed that happiness awaits them, because their feelings are mutual. However, Beethoven's plans were not destined to come true: the young countess preferred to him a more noble person, the composer Wenzel Gallenberg.

The same chorale prelude, which is especially famous for Tarkovsky's film "Solaris". It sounds especially strong when you read the translation of the prayer that Johann Sebastian Bach put as the basis of his musical composition: 

I cry to You, Lord Jesus Christ! Please hear my pleas.  

Grant me Your grace. 

Don't let me lose heart /having lost/ of true faith, Lord, I pray. 

Grant me, O Lord, true faith. 

That I may live for You, help my neighbor, and carry Your word.

Chorale prelude in F minor BWV 639 for organ on the theme of the chorale “Ich ruf’ zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ” - from the "Organ Book". In it, the melody of the chorale is placed in the upper voice. The lower voice represents exactly running quarters (step rhythm). The middle voice is melodic figuration, in which the intonations of the "sigh" are distinguished - descending small seconds and descending thirds. This middle voice expresses the mood of the chorale text - begging. The main mood of the prelude is prayerful and sublime. The unhurried pace and harmony of the prelude serve to create a special atmosphere, as if a portal for communication with God.

This work, edited by Eduard Artemyev, sounds in the film "Solaris" by Andrei Tarkovsky...

Та самая хоральная прелюдия, какая особенно известна по фильму Тарковского "Солярис". Особенно сильно звучит, когда читаешь перевод той молитвы, какую Иоганн Себастьян Бах положил в основу своего музыкального произведения: 

К Тебе взываю, Господи Иисусе Христе! Прошу, услышь мои мольбы.  

Даруй мне благодать Твою. 

Не дай мне пасть духом /лишившись/ веры истинной, Господи, молю. 

Даруй мне, Господи, веру истинную. 

Чтобы я жил для Тебя, помогал ближнему и нёс слово Твоё.

Хоральная прелюдия фа минор BWV 639 для органа на тему хорала “Ich ruf’ zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ” - из "Органной книжечки". В ней мелодия хорала помещена в верхний голос. Нижний голос представляет собой ровно идущие четверти (ритм шага). Средний голос - это мелодические фигурации, в которых выделяются интонации "вздоха" - нисходящие малые секунды и нисходящие терции. Этот средний голос выражает настроение текста хорала - просящее. Основное настроение прелюдии - молитвенное и возвышенное. Неторопливый темп и гармония прелюдии служат созданию особой атмосферы, как бы портала для общения с Богом.

Это произведение в обработке Эдуарда Артемьева звучит в фильме «Солярис» Андрея Тарковского...
