PUBLIC SYSTEM RECORDINGS

Marcel Dettmann is a rarity in electronic music. His precocious disdain for rules has been one of the key ingredients for a decades-spanning arc that started sometime around the fall of the Berlin Wall (with early exposure to post-punk, industrial and synth pop) and continues to this day. His leitmotif is instantly recognisable, expertly layered, playfully syncopated, and though his influence is everywhere, no one quite manages to copy his pioneering sound. His formative influences surface frequently, serious atonal arrangements that follow the logic of EBM descending into a flurry of protean melodies; maybe this versatility is why, for a long time now, Dettmann’s sound has been so synonymous with a city in flux. Bassiani Podcast 130 is an excerpt from his Bassiani set back in March, and you’ll want to make sure you don’t miss this one, because there’s really no one like him.

Back to Georgia and Tbilisi this week with the one and only Hamatsuki, resident DJ at the infamous Bassiani. Exponent of a versatile DJing style that runs the gamut from rugged techno wares to propulsive acid, via liquid electro, techno, house and everything in between, Hamatsuki treats us to a wild and effusive two hours of radical obliqueness, steering us constantly into murky waters, where life swarms and the metamorphic magic happens. Stacking crazy frantic wares one after the other in a Fantasia-like symphony of broken grooves, raging uptempo and hair-raising buildups, here comes one of Tbilisi’s key figures with a massive, uncompromising blast-off of a set. The Lady Machine is back for another round of Podcast fun for Bassiani Podcast 266. Born in Rio, based in Berlin, Camila Milieme developed an ear for techno at a young age, attending Brazil’s Galaktika parties and picking up tracks from radio show Novas Tendencias before landing her first gig at the fresh age of 21, and at the famed Bunker 94 in São Paulo no less. Following studies in music production in the UK, she eventually landed in Berlin and channeled everything into a dual career as DJ/producer. Her vinyl sets were, are, contagious and brimming with rapid-fire basslines, relying heavily on the type of techno à la Detroit that has been so foundational to the genre without aging a day. These ones she’s published on Mote Evolver, half of Unterwegs with musicmate Decka and resident at free-spirited Berlin party series Pornceptual. A successful crowd-DJ alliance is no easy task, but twenty years of experience have sharpened her instinct for sound and the people she’s playing it to. Driving techno that lurches along on a razor edge, slamming rhythms that vibrate through the body, the magical and unquantifiable substance that allows the very best raves to coalesce. Whatever it is she has it in spades and this latest instalment proves it. This recent number’s a cut from her live set at Bassiani in mid April; rampant grooves and low-end layers picked, welded together and distorted by this singular Brazilian talent, and mastered by @neptunemastering. The Lady Machine’s chopped-up beats are a techno purist’s dream, this newest arrival makes it reality.

Bassiani Podcast 272 brings together two techno heavy-hitters for a three-hour bout of heady, rolling grooves. In one corner comes Georgian mainstay and grassroots agitator NDRX, a formative member of Tbilisi's techno contingent. His early efforts in expanding the city's nightlife offerings helped drive radical change, and shaped the decades since. His mission further translated into the founding of Stare at DJ (2012), and 11th Floor (2015). Both are vehicles for the gathering and promotion of local talent without which, Georgia today would look much different. In the other corner comes Dustin Zahn, a midwestern champion for tribal rhythms and pulsating hypnotism. Heavily armed with a flurry of references including the brain-melting IDM of the late 90s and iconoclastic beats, Dustin founded Enemy Records in 2004. In recent years, he has made appearances on labels like Blueprint, Token, and Rekids. He also hosts the Trainwrecks Podcast, an outlet for intimate face-to-face chats with industry peers. This storied duo are a menacing match, a b2b pairing that manifests the adrenaline-fueled techno native to both their sounds and whips up a sum greater than both its parts. This latest number is a bout of fevered techno havoc devised by two sonic confrères, an auditory onslaught of hammering loops recorded live at Bassiani's season closing night.
