EPM Podcast 141 comes from UK producer, Blueprint label runner and DJ James Ruskin. A bastion for British Techno, Blueprint Records was originally founded in 1996 by James and the late Richard Polson and since then has continued to be at the forefront of cutting-edge labels. Entering its 25th year with a series of 3 12” EPs we are also delighted to have James involved with our own 20th celebrations this year with his track ‘There Was A Time’ as showcased in this new mix. Taking a more restrained and experimental techno path this set sees Ruskin bring the likes of VC-118A, Surgeon, Mal Hombre, Bambounou, Kerrie, Planetary Assault Systems (PAS), Shifted, Vril, Anodyne and more into the frame. 

Consistently releasing quality material through Blueprint since the label's mid-'90s foundation, Ruskin has also issued several full-lengths and EPs through German institution Tresor, including 2001's ‘Into Submission’ and 2008’s ‘The Dash’. In addition to releasing collaborations with Surgeon and Oliver Ho, Ruskin has also worked with Regis (Karl O'Connor) as O/V/R, and produced more experimental, IDM-leaning material with Mark Broom as the Fear Ratio with several albums featuring on Manchester’s iconic Skam label as well as the duo’s new Deadhand moniker which recently saw an EP released on Seagrave feat. DJ Prime Cuts and rapper Sensational. As a series of EP releases drops as part of the label’s 25 year celebrations and with several album projects in the pipeline, 2021 sees James firmly back in the production hot seat. 025 - No other mix CD out has made me want to wake up to it as much as this one. Think slowly rising from a dream/hangover with the best sound possible and that's about it. Both discs on Sasha & Digweed's Northern Exposure open with absolutely gorgeous tracks, Gus Gus's 'Believe' being an example of this. Furry Phreak's 'Soothe (Chicane Jazz)' dives deeper into the sound before the cd moves on to intelligent breaks, early trance and climaxes in what must be one of the most beautiful electronic tracks ever made... Hybrid's Symphony. This isn't just music you would wake up too, it's so good, you'd probably happily die to it as well. Another CD which raises the bar and takes it's own thrown on the Classic Mix CD series, and a fine choice for our quarter century episode. Turn it up... and enjoy the mix.

About the cd:
For this episode we showcase Global Undergound arising from the underground into the huge success that it was moving into it's teens. For their 14th release we are taken on a progressive tour of Hong Kong with John Digweed, an awesome CD which was much loved by man. Massive shout out to James Wilson of Newcastle for sorting this, and also out to Michael McDonough from Sunderland for his efforts too. Of whom Digweed was a massive inspiration for and are both still to this day, huge fans.

I'm sure they aren't the only ones. So as always, turn it up... and enjoy the mix.

Taking trends, making trends and breaking trends, Josh Wink’s music has always experimented and influenced. The sound of Josh Wink today remains one of a man unafraid to walk the border between stylistic boundaries. His remix discography of over 25 years includes seminal artists such as Radiohead, Moby, Sting, Depeche Mode, Radioslave, and Dave Clarke, to name a few.

Wink also runs his own label, Ovum Recordings, which is in its 28th year of existence.

About the CD:
A seminal selection for our 175 episode. Featuring a CD has that mystic quality sitting on the store shelves of HMV or whichever record store you shopped in. With unforgettable artwork and a sound that has gone onto secure its classic status. And although I didn't buy this first release... I had a subconscious feeling it was something very special indeed.

Thanks to everyone for sharing this, especially the Facebook followers and good friend Ross Haswell. Oh and a special shout out to Paul for reminding me of this one!

When I first started DJ-ing I was influenced most by the music of my hometown. But second to that, I was obsessed with UK dance music and club culture. I bought every DJ magazine. I listened to every Essential Mix. So when I found out I was going to do the mix, I wanted to put a special focus at certain points on UK dance music - because after all this is for Radio 1.

It was important to me to create a peak time club set because that is what I’m missing most right now.  I wanted to give a snapshot of what you would hear if you heard me in a club today - all the different styles of dance music mixed together.

I only call out 4 “Elliott Edits” in the tracklist because those are the ones I changed the most and have played many times in clubs.  But actually every track on this mix is edited.  Like putting together a puzzle except you can change the shape of the pieces slightly to tell a smoother, more concise, story.

In the “Mix CD” days, DJ’s approached a mix with the same amount of time and effort as an album.  When I do a mix like this (or my Panorama Mix, or my Fabric CD) I hold myself to those same standards, and I hope you can hear that within.
