Ep 256 - Coach Vin Lananna

Karen Merlin the Marketing and Communication manager for UTMB and Steve Doolan, VP of Global Commercial Strategy/Sports Marketing at Hoka join Farley for this weeks episode of Pace The Nation.  We start with Karen to talk about the amazing week that was UTMB in Chamonix, France.  Farley and Karen talk about his experience (as a spectator) and what to expect from UTMB for the other races they have on their calendar.   We also talk about the partnership with UTMB and Hoka.

Next, Farley talks with Steve Doolan from Hoka.  Steve dives in further with us about the partnership with UTMB and Hoka.  We also talk about his role at the brand and how Hoka as seen incredible growth over the past few years.  We end the conversation with Farley being fascinated with Steves ability to speak fluent French.

This week Farley is back in Studio 1A and he is joined by Arlingtonian Ultra marathoning legend Mike Wardian.

Chris is Mike reminisce about the good old days of the Pacers Racing team in the late 90s and Mike's journey to join the team.  We spend the bulk of the interview talking about Mikes Run across America this past summer.  A run that was inspired by the Movie Forrest Gump.  Mike raised over $100,000 for World Vision!

We end the show talking about the DC Half marathon and what an amazing experience it was.

Ep 279 - The Filler - Mike Wardian

Julie is back!  We quickly catch up with the co-host who has been away from the show for a month.  After getting reacquainted, we set the stage for our guest running videographer, Johnny Pace.   Johnny joins us to talk about his new short film that he did for Pacers Running, Cooper.   We discuss how both Julie and Chris got to know Johnny.  We talk about the story of Pace Photo, the business he is growing in this running space.  Johnny also talks about balancing a full time job while doing content creation all over the country.  We discuss how he is a professional with a nomadic life that is possible now in the world we live in.  Julie and Chris throughout the interview fight over who was more meaningful to Johnny's development.

We close the show with a family story that might be more typical than it should be in the Farley household.

PTN Ep 280 Who Was More Influential? (Johnny Pace)

This week Farley is on location at the Georgetown Pacers Running store interviewing Author and Running Influencer, Alison Desir!  Alison starts the show by reading a chapter from her new book: Running While Black.  She tells a story of running from Harlem to Washington DC for the Women's March in 2017.  
Throughout the conversation we tease stories from her new book.  In addition, we talk about the issues in running for minorities.  The lack of diversity in running has been overlooked for years.  Alison is leading the way in trying to change that.  Its a lively discussion that ends with audience questions.

Ep 281 - Running While Black (Alison Desir)

PTN is back!  Finally.  Julie and Chris record from Clarendon for the 1st podcast of 2023.  The hosts talk about where they have been, what they've been doing, and why it's taken so long to get back to recording a show.

They are joined in studio by Tinoda Matsatsa, a High School star runner.  Tinoda was the first African American runner to break 4 minutes in the mile.  He also holds the 3rd fastest 800m time ever in the history of High School Running.

Julie and Chris talk to Tinoda about his upcoming U20 national meet that is happening in Eugene Oregon. 

They close the show with the results from that race and a promise to be back in 2 weeks.

Julie and Chris are back in studio for another episode of PTN!  This week the hosts dive back into some hard hitting personal life discussions (Chris can't wait for the kids to go back to school, Julie does all the planning around the house) - and Chris continues to be amazed how much work there is to do to just get the kids organized for their activities. They are joined this week by the new head coach of the Atlanta Track Clubs elite team, Tommy Nohilly!  Tommy is a New Yorker that is heading down south to run the mid distance track program for the club.  

Julie and Chris go down memory lane with Nohilly, talking to him about his career as a runner and all the coaching stops he's had along the way - including being a coach for Julie at the NJNY Track club in the 2010's.  

They finish the show with some optimism that the podcast is, in fact, back!!

Ep 284 - Recording In An Airstream (Tommy Nohilly)

This week Farley is flying solo.  The opening conversation focuses on 2 running news stories that made mainstream headlines.  First the story of Noah Lyles calling out the NBA for calling their NBA Finals the "World Champs".  Then the talk is of the marathon in Mexico City that DQ'ed 11,000 runners for cutting the course.

Farley is then joined by Hilary Biggs the Race Director for the DC Half.  The DC Half Marathon is September 17th, and has had record sign ups.  Hilary talks about her journey from working in Sports in DC 20+ years ago to now where she is putting on one of the largest Half Marathons in the DC area.

Julie and Chris are both back in studio for the first EVER collaboration podcast with "Be the Impact" Podcast.

Before they get to their guest, they start the show talking about Julie's triumphant Half Marathon effort at the DC Half.  You be the judge if she feels good about it or not.  Chris and Julie agree that the race was an amazing experience and a great day for runners in DC.

The guest this week is Bill Johnston, the Co-Founder and President of Recover Brands.  Recover Brands is a unique apparel brand from North Carolina that manufactures apparel out of 100% recycled materials.  Recover is also a partner in this years Marine Corps Marathon. 

Julie, Chris, and Bill talk about Recover Brands humble beginnings in 2010 to now in 2023 where they are sponsoring and building apparel for one of the country's largest marathons.

Bill explains the process of making the apparel and shares his mission driven approach to business.

Its the day before race day, and Chris is on the expo floor with 2 ultra marathoning professional athletes:  Kyle Curtin and JP Giblin.  Kyle an Army Veteran and JP a Navy Veteran currently run for Altra on their elite ultra marathoning team.  Kyle and JP are in town to promote Altra as the footwear brand is in its first year of sponsorship of the Marine Corps Marathon.

Chris talks to the guys about their weekend in DC and all the running around (literally) they've been doing.  They also both talk about their path into Ultra running and the successes they've had over the years.  Kyle a top 10 finish at Western States and JP winning the 2023 Leadville 100.

A deep dive into local geography before we talk about our own running. We start off talking a little about New York and how having a ten month old has helped keep Alison present in the moment with everything going on.  At (14:30) we touch on current events, and then go back and talk about how she got her start in running and how it has integrated with social activism. We start off talking about his training over the last few months and whats coming up.  At (12:51) Johnny talks about his relationship with Asics, and then training with NYTC and his coaches, including some Gags stories.  At (16:50) Johnny talks about the charity component of his Blue Jean mile, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and running the race in memory of his younger brother Patrick.  At (21:54) we ask about working with Levis and how he prepared for a Blue Jeans Mile.  At (26:06) we talk about the cool spikes that Asics made special for the event.  At (27:10) Johnny talks about the race.  At (31:18) we ask Johnny to weigh in on running bits.  At (34:32) we ask about Johnnys current running cycle and how he has adapted to the Olympic postponement. At (38:00) we talk about his running genes, pun very much intended, and then at (42:58) Farley puts his foot in his mouth and it does not get edited out and then Docs asks a couple of questions. At (52:50) we discuss an article that explained the IOCs position that athletes taking a knee during the Olympics will face a ban, at (54:55) Nascar bans the Confederate flag at their events and their social media response to a lesser known racer who retired over the rule and at (58:36) US Soccer reverses its policy on its athletes knelling during the anthem. Docs, a FT Bragg native, finds it ridiculous that US Military installations are named after Confederate Generals on the premise that Confederate Generals were the enemy of the US Army.  We close out at (1:10:30) with an update on the Brown University decision to demote the Mens Track and Field Team.

Ep 238 - Forever in Blue Jeans (Johnny Gregorek)

We open the show talking about the absolutely ridiculous Kishy fitness challenge that has gotten out of control and for some reason Farley is yelling at Docs even though he is not guilty of what Farley is accusing him of doing.  At (15:04) we are joined by the co-owner of Philadelphia Runner Ross Martinson. We start out talking about his philly area running stores and how the business has been impacted by the covid shutdown.  At (21:59) we discuss the status of fall races.  At (25:45) Ross tells us about the lows about the damage and theft when one of his downtown stores was looted and the positive feelings from the overwhelming support from the community coming together to help clean up.  AT (34:18) we talk about the stores that are open and the plan to reopen the store that was looted.  We are back at (45:02) to wrap up the interview and wants to know why Docs roots for the Philly teams, and Farley explains why he didn't bring philly sports up in the interview.  At (47:45) we talk about the cancellation of the New York City Marathon this fall.  At (54:53) the Farleys share a scary personal story.  At (1:04:25) Farleys internet sleuths tip him off to a Docs reference on another podcast and gives him an idea on how Julie might forge through future PTN episodes.

Farley opens the show asking Docs about a high school teammate with a similar story to our guest.  We are joined at (10:03) by Olympian Hassan Mead.  At (13:31) we ask Hassan about his experiences when he first moved to the United States and what it was like not knowing the language at school. At (19:37) we talk about his introduction to running and the running journey through high school and at the University of Minnesota. At (25:17) we talk about the recent Taylor Dutch article that discussed Hassans experiences with social injustice and racial profiling, his views on current events and what he feels his role is to support progress in this country.  At (35:13) we ask about the postponement of the 2020 Olympics and ask Hassan about his current training. Its just the hosts this week and we start off with an inaccurate history lesson and a quick transition into haircuts.  You know, a running show.  At (8:58) we complain about the weather, and Farley schools us with some excellent scientific takes.  At (14:32) we talk about a couple of big local fall races that are officially going virtual.  At (19:10) we discuss the reduction in workforce by the New York Road Runners.  At (21:12) its the army 10 miler and then (22:05) farley tries to hit us over the head with another bad news story but the silver lining is that its not really bad news for us or our listeners.  At (24:55) we challenge Julie to rescue the show with an update on college and high school sports this fall.  At (36:34) we talk about some professional track races going on around the country and discuss the merits of an American record.  At (51:55) Farley gives Docs high marks on his social media game and at (56:29) Docs has some tv recommendations for people to watch as they are sitting at home being responsible and at (58:30) Docs has some Breaking Sports News about the Washington Football Team, which is old news but it is honestly broken to Farley on the show.  At (1:03:47) we get a long anticipated update on London the dog.  At (1:06:59) Farley pays tribute to Bob Wallace, his friend and mentor, who lost his fight with cancer last week.

Its just the guys again this week and they start off reducing the inner circle.  At (9:40) we are joined by the owner of the Runners Retreat, Mark Stickley, who put on the Loudon Mile last week. We have him on primarily to tease him about going to Virginia Tech, and then we talk about the in person road race that they were able to hold in Loudoun.  We are back at (48:12) to wrap up the interview and then at (50:40) we talk about the cyber attack that shut down Garmin online. At (1:00:16) we talk about Tommy Rivers, an ultra marathoner that was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.
