Auxi Belmonte visits KPFK 90.7FM to discuss her new album Kairos

On this week’s From The Vault, We Celebrate the Life and Work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with 2 speeches near the end of his life that rarely get any notice.

By 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King’s strategy for organizing had evolved beyond Civil Rights. He clearly saw how resources that could be helping the poorer communities were being absorbed by the Military Budget. He began strategizing for a broader based Poor People’s Campaign that went beyond the Black Communities and outreached to anyone who was poor.

You will hear many of these topics discussed in this February 25th, 1967 address sponsored by the Nation Magazine at a Nation Institute Conference in Los Angeles. The name title of his address is The Casualties of the War in Vietnam. 

Next we hear one of the last speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. given in Anaheim California on March 16, 1968 just a few weeks before his assassination. This was given before the California Democratic Council at the Anaheim Convention Center.

This season we tell the stories of black women, who were forgotten and weren't given a spotlight in our history textbooks. But this season we change that and tell the stories of black women who have made history in the fields of politics, music, literature and fashion. In a series we're calling: The History of Black Women Breaking the Glass Ceiling!

We kick start this season with the story of Shirley Chisholm. Shirley Chisholm was the first black woman to very win a seat in Congress. Throughout her career, she would experience sexist and racist comments. Even when she had to deal with these comments, she still succeeded and was an extremely effective politician. She was a hardcore progressive and before Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez came into the scene, it was Chisholm who was the talk of the town.

Women Behind Bars!

Martha Gonzalez is an Associate Professor at Scripps/Claremont College and a Grammy Award winning singer songwriter from the band Quetzal. Martha has a new book out about her experience with music from a Family, Community and Music Industry perspective.

This conversation with Travel Tips for Aztlan host Mark Torres
 takes a look at some of these issues that has taken music from a personal and community art form and has transformed it into a commercial product. Martha Gonzalez also discusses some of the steps artists are taking to keep music as true to it's original intention and to build community and tell important stories that will empower us all.

Sing songwriter and Travel Tips co-host Nancy Sanchez and producer Beto Hale were my special guests to talk about Nancy's new 3-song EP Say Something. the songs were inspired by the community actions during the Black Lives Matter protest in response to the killing of George Floyd in late May early June 2020. Beto's productions were lush and beautiful. the songs Say Something, The Kids Are Still in Cages and Hasta Que Todos Estemos A Salvo are premiered in this segment.
