Pacific Rhythm is elated to present a grounding offering from Oakland's Space Ghost entitled Private Paradise as our first release of 2022. The LP is an ode to Space Ghost's time spent at Sea Ranch on the Northern California coast, a place he and his partner visit to refresh their spirit and regain optimism and enthusiasm for the outside world.

Private Paradise possesses a rare ability to restore, rejuvenate, and inspire through each listen and is something we've only grown more and more fond of during the unforeseen complications we encountered during its release over the past two years. It's a piece of music that feels like a perfect nod to where we've been musically for the past 8 years and where we see ourselves heading in the future. Deep, contemplative, and uplifting audio that compels its listeners to focus on the positive forces in the world and the power of being present in a moment.

Good news! Pacific Spirit is back after a small hiatus with our first mix of 2024. This time around it's a 3 hour live recording from one of Pittsburgh's finest, Aaron Clark. Here's a bit of back story on the recording:

In October 2022, Hot Mass threw a fundraiser for the Kyiv Angels – a group doing work to support Ukrainian civilians. We tapped Kyiv’s Closer resident Shakolin, and I took the warm-up set of the night. This is the recording of my part of the night. I dusted off a lot of old favourite records and leaned into a slow build that I try to set the club up with, tugging the floor between psychedelic rhythms, trippy techno and pops of house. This recording landed in that bullseye opening zone I aim for, and I hope it transports you to my favourite little dance floor in the world."

Ahead of the release of @kennedyams' Pacific Rhythm debut this coming Friday we thought we should share @space-ghost-1's reinterpretation of "Asleep" from the records a-side.

Space Ghost slows the energy down to a cosmic crawl and leans into his love of UK Street Soul. The result is, as predicted, something quite special.

A live recording from the legendary San Francisco "Wine Hole", better known as @barpartime has surfaced from the evening of September 2, 2022. The recording is a dusty stumble through the first two hours of a 5 hour B2B session between DJ D.DEE and Jeremy Castillo. It's jam packed with plenty of c-sides and alternate versions of classic songs you never needed to hear again. 

Slow your day down, relax, and remind yourself music is awesome and that you love listening to it.

What began as a bit of a "mood board" for a project in the works turned into a 90-minute soundtrack for your next late train through the stratosphere. Good news! After a few months off, Pacific Spirit is back with another hot session courtesy of NYC's finest, @enterthelloyd. Here are a few words about the mix from the man himself...

“I recently found this mix of weird R&B dubs while pillaging old laptops for music and I haven’t turned it off since. If you've ever dug through old drives for anything you know how mundane and unrewarding it can be. It's like a road trip that never ends. However, when you come across a file labeled  "Actavis and Activator" you pull the car over and see what's going on. I couldn’t tell you when or why I made it but I’m glad I did. Feel good vibes for feel bad times. Hope you like it.”

Pacific Spirit No. 93 | DJ Lloyd

Pacific Rhythm is proud to introduce the first EP from label founder DJ D.DEE's new production alias, Pacific Spirit. The EP is a collaborative effort with long-time friend of the label Patrick Holland and was recorded at the Jump Source studios in Montreal, Quebec, earlier this year over the course of a few snowy days.

The Canada House EP slips through a myriad of influences, and the tracks aim to service the warm-up slot and the late-night crew. From slouched 78 bpm Balearic featuring D.DEE's vocals to storming acid, down to life-affirming disco with Holland ripping live bass, keys, and guitar. It's all here and ready for the club, radio, or wherever you choose to enjoy it.

Good news! Pacific Spirit episodes may be getting fewer and further in-between, but the vibes are as high as ever. Episode 94 comes courtesy of LA’s Jamma-Dee, an old friend who’s been in the mix for ages and played parties for us as far back as 2015.

The mix he’s prepared for us is described as a “summer-forward bounce and groove from the underground crates, 70 min of all wax from the chamber of Jamm”.

Ahead of Saturday’s Dane’s Dance Emporium x Voyage Funktastique session this Saturday at Performance Works, we asked Walla P to contribute a mix to our Pacific Spirit series. 

As predicted, he did not disappoint! In our opinion (and many others) Walla P is one of the purest and most talented DJs in the funk, disco, and boogie sphere, and we can’t wait to see him do his thing here in Vancouver for the first time.

Here are a few words about his mix from the man himself…

“For this guest mix, I got inspired by listening to some of the previous mixes, lots of atmospheric/ambient grooves from records that came out over the last decade or so. Lots of stuff you don’t get to usually play, but I like to think that this could be the soundtrack for my flight to Vancouver.”

Jesse Futerman makes his Pacific Rhythm debut with a life-affirming slice of music lovingly crafted in Canada’s French quarter in the summer of 2019. On "Luckey," the Montreal producer reunites with his good friend Beverly Glenn-Copeland — a Canadian music legend whose keyboard-inflected outsider folk has been making waves across the world recently — and a cast of guest musicians for a song full of vibrant emotion and plush instrumentation, as Futerman works with an ensemble incorporating cello, saxophone, bass, and vintage hardware to great effect. 

There's a melancholy tinge to the swooning synths, but the infectious vocals and pitter-patter drums are uplifting and reassuring. "Luckey" is the kind of track that just radiates contentment, joy and gratitude — Futerman himself says he teared up laying down Justin Wright's cello, which gives you an idea of the vibes contained herein. 

The release also comes with a beautiful reimagining from Peaking Lights, who puts a dubbed-out spin on the track, like '80s post-disco via '90s Afro-cosmic Ibiza tracks, rounding off an EP whose classic touch and classy arrangements will surely elevate any individual who is Luckey enough to cross paths with it.
