Following two years of intimate work, Melbourne-based Packwood now stands ready to unveil the prologue to his debut album with the release of brand new single All Smoke Must Find Its Way Home.
 
The single is the first moment of Vertumnus, Packwood’s epic four part seasonal opus. Each part of Vertumnus will be released as a stand-alone EP on the first day of the season that inspired it. To begin: Autumnal, released March 1st.
 
“All Smoke Must Find Its Way Home” is a celebration of warmth; a sort of hymnal rejoicing the immeasurable joy of one the simplest and most remarkable parts of life – the sun and it’s incredible gift of life”, Bayden said. “As it happens, this was also the very first song that I wrote and recorded for Vertumnus, on a brisk April morning in Bathurst, my hometown.”

Autumnal, the first of Packwood’s four part seasonal epic, Vertumnus, contemplates the concept of changeability, and what it means to fall. Elements of folk and chamber music – both instrumental and vocal - intertwine to create a rich, immersive reflection of Autumn. Moving between bright anticipation and shaded resolve, this first release of Vertumnus is an ode to Packwood’s previous work, and the beginning of a much grander story.

"Obstinate" is a meditation on death and rebirth: an introverted exploration of the self, mortality and our relationship with nature. In contrast to the first release from Vertumnus, the minimalistic Autumnal, Hibernal is expansive and theatrical in its instrumentation. Intimate, hushed vocals play against swelling orchestral and choral arrangements, hinting at the parallels of our own transience and that of our planet. Lyrically, Hibernal is framed through a darker, colder lens – but musically it inspires a resilience and hope in the path of humanity.

Musician Bayden Hine has been performing under his middle name, Packwood, since 2010. His self titled debut EP established a distinctive point of view deeply influenced by his rural Australian upbringing, and was followed by the ambitious and expansive orchestral folk album Vertumnus. In his new release be not afraid Packwood presents a reflection of the inner chaos so many Millennials grapple with, divulging his own personal journey with addiction and autism / ADHD, through poetic melodies and the occasional appearance of terrifying divine beings.
