De Souza says he had been working on this chord progression (Bm, A, G, E) since, at least, 1996. "I used to live with this girl back in 1998, she worked in theater. One day I arrived home and on the living room there was a huge blue 10x10ft pillow with black stars, she saved from a production. Also, the whole LGBT and hippie communities seemed to have come to a party. She was able to play the progression and I was able to solo for what seems to have been 4h. No one was paying particular attention to the music. So by 2010 I got some studio equipment and was able to capture a glimpse of Porto Alegre's alienation right on the tracks. The solos registered here are live, from around the 3rd take."

De Souza complements "It's a lot of work to get to that nice blast of emptiness, people say, but laziness abounds in this track. If I was to record a proper drumset, resolve the lyrics, the singing, do a proper solo, play the piano right, keep the time on the bass, even this four chord churumela would be presentable. But it seems I can't do anything right." 

Death presides over the eerie overtones of Maharaja's guitar solo, this valley of tears, our life. It would be important to benefit others, but sounds are just so damn empty of substance to ever come to not mean something. Even less than apparently solid stuff and ravioli.

But I am reasonably delighted by the result.” The Vajra Guru might be pleased with this rendering containing a quote by him. “I initially wrote something about Hassan I Sabbah, in Portuguese over some easy and haunting melody on the acoustic guitar, but I didn’t want to praise heretics, so I changed the tone a little.”

"I had the acoustic parts since the 90's. A guy told me they were quite awesome, I believed him." De Souza laconically remembers. One should always consider phenomena to be transient -- that we must remind us constantly this is part of the deal. "if you don't get tired of Samsara listening to the long solos on this one, you might as well suffer a lot, just 'cause ..." De Souza complements. "This one took a lot of time masturbating on the DAW, and I was quite desperate just to imagine the day I would have to compose a melody and lyrics, and sing on it. But it wasn't all that bad, it took a long lost night. I didn't turn off the fan, just put a big old noise gate on the whole thing. Maybe that's what we need for contentment in life, a big old noise gate."

De Souza warns "I have dabbled in solar-phallic shenanigans since the nineties. Never did much for me". Nonetheless, this essential distillation of Let The Sunshine In with Sociedade Alternativa plus added pop clichés retains a spirit of strict conservatism. "'Do not change, do not try to change, do not alter, do not modify', someone with wild eyes read me once somewhere" says De Souza, and complements "I can be quite funny sometimes, ha ha." About the procedures that came to produce this fine musical specimen, De Souza explains “I composed this one while on the keyboard, which is funny, since I decided not to record it. I needed to work in order to buy groceries, so I did all guitars in one take, and just deleted some mistakes and did minor editing. It would greatly improve with at least a dozen takes of each guitar, but the pressures of modern life don’t allow for such leisure. Everything else was quite easy. The bass sounds good. Voice is meh as always. I don’t even know why I still insist on making music. Better to watch BBC documentaries and feel smarter, perhaps. Music does nothing for me.”

“The liquidator is one who cleans up some big nuclear mess, half-knowingly his own health is in grave danger” claims De Souza. “Getting payed minimum wages they end up being screwed by the company and the government, much like war veterans, but with no honors. It happened in Chernobyl, and will go on Fukushima for the next decades or more.”
Yet, we don’t understand what the fuss is all about. De Souza elaborates “Bodhisattvas are all liquidators of Samsara. They don’t care for glory, and pay no attention to their own temporal welfare. They do the dirtiest jobs, and don’t care for the consequences, only that it is needed to be done, for the benefit of all.”
“I had the guitar theme for some months, and urgently needed to acknowledge my respect for the faceless ones who face incredible suffering to fix up what greedy bastards have set up in blind trust of engineering. The recording was very easy. I have always loved the basso continuo, and the small hopeful section in the middle stands out as a reminder that all of samsara is a joke.”
The fact remains that receiving big “radiation” doses for low pay, facing the odds of incredible suffering, is our daily chore. We are all liquidators of our own Fukushimas.

“I once dated this maid, she was swell, and I composed a blues, that’s it”, DeSouza simplifies. “As always, I could have made a few more takes on the solos, and present a cleaner end product – but why? It is not as someone is paying me to do this. I do as I fancy.”

“I was born in São Paulo, but I have lived amongst the gauchos ever since. My grandpa used to make me say ‘I was born in São Paulo, but I am from the Rio Grande in my heart’ to his friends.” A sort of The Doors playing the milonga. “I got some Farfisa plugin working on the midi, and Ray Manzarek, of course, used a clone of the Farfisa by Vox on the first album. I actually learned the keyboard imitating Manzarek. Great guy.” He goes on “some have complained a chinoca is not a ‘small china lady’, but more of an easy going native who looks like someone from china, and might engage in prostitution. Anyways, the joke is on the gauchos, as always.” He seems not to be able to contain himself: “The first verse is a copycat of normal gaucho country music, but then we are soon talking about the more hipster gaucho from Porto Alegre, who still wear bombachas, enjoys French Cinema and reads Joyce – things like that. I would like to have said ‘insanity’ instead of ‘destiny’, but it was too late and I was lazy to rerecord”. Still, there is a greatness to the pampas and capivaras no song could ever capture.

"This one got me the deal", says De Souza, gloomly. "It was not as the device of signing up some paper and making occult references didn't came up before in the 1930's, and also in the 70's. It is a praise/damnation of our Lady Babylon, The Machine of Capitalism, within which we are all enslaved". What about that miserable soul, the 15 minute polemic celebrity of the occult world, Aleister Crowley, what that means to De Souza’s music? “Nothing. I tried quoting Crowley to get laid, back in the 1990’s, when I went through puberty and it was fashionable. Apart from that, sacrificing frogs is not my kind of humour.” The good on the title is on us all, because we are all inherently good, no matter how skewed our lives and opinions might end being. “What a waste of precious time, if I knew, I would have sent this music back in time to myself. Then I would’t have to compose it, I guess.”

De Souza said "Accuse me of quantum mysticism, make me play a DADGAD solo again, but please don't tell me my micro-tonalities are wrong." Whatever those physicists are striving with, it seems substance is what never fails De Souza. He could use metaphors such as light, etc, but the kinda HEAVY insanity this world provides is enough. De Souza seems unhappy with some details "I got lazy, I could have added some bass and keyboards, could have done a decent solo and made the words complete in any form -- or at least should have mocked that total imbecile Henry Stapp a little more... but it was late at night and I was disturbing the neighbours."

De Souza says "It through the Blues that I decided it was 'spiritual' to waste time with music. A damn good coping mechanism for lost souls, that's what it is." While the 'killing floor' has left many of us paralyzed as zombies in a wild competitive society, playing the magic sad-happy notes on the guitar is still revolutionary. De Souza stands his ground "I don't know if it is 'good', but I done it, there it is."

Thing

De Souza says "I have no respect for music, it's a complete waste of everybody's time." Yet time proves again and again the well has still not dried out entirely. "It's complicated remains one of those moments lost in time where my complete lack of professionalism and utter laziness shows up with the force of a thousand dying suns". Death is the lick one will never learn, but we can always jam a little bit over a drum loop and a somewhat improvised bass line we did 10 minutes ago. "Equipment doesn't help, I had to open up the old strato and push a few wires around a bit to get the sound to be LOUD again." Also De Souza girlfriend didn't allow him to complete 4 solos, she didn't knew a seminal and groundbreaking nothing was being accomplished.

It's complicated

"I play like I shit, I find a place, go through the movements, and plop something. It stinks bad." De Souza quips about his preternatural affinity with the sun. Death moves us to make something, but whatever there is, not even nihilism shall remain. "I juxtaposed some 1st takes and banged my hand against the keyboard for the length of the fiasco. I never seem to find any wrong note anywhere, that is, as if one single right one gets stroked... I guess it's all the same shit. Just shinning through everything, translucent, trans-lucid." De Souza compromises. Why should one listen to this without bothering the nerves of neighbors is beyond my understanding. It needs to be LOUD.

De Souza explains: "My task of creating musical landscapes has nothing to do with art or entertainment. Has nothing to do with selflessness, spirituality and being famous or getting rich. Has nothing to do with anything but wasting everybody's time". Overindulging 4 guitars over a loop De Souza extends his stay on our ears with such, for lack of a better word, lushness, that we almost gasp por life.

"99% of the stuff I begin I never seem to end. But who does?" De Souza says. This is a lazy mixture of several unfinished tracks. "If anyone pays me to soundtrack a movie I might finish 10%, which would make several hours of music."

De Souza warns "Sometimes I just find something in my hard drive, and it seems for a while ok to just throw it at people." No one seems to have the patience for psychedelia anymore, especially since durgs are out of our sufficiently complicated adult lifes. Anyway, De Souza explains "it's just easier just to make up something and try to make people think you are an artist. You know, you don't have the courage to make proper music, so in the end you just mix a recorder, some feedback and an open tuning acustic guitar. The file is from 2006, but I believe it is an older jam with myself that I must have updated with some reverb by 2006. I am a much better record player than it shows here. Guitar feedback disturbs the neighbours, I would like to use it more, but it is complicated." Time gets to the point where death reaches its threshold, and then anything goes. And rots.

I work from Porto Alegre, on the extreme south of Brazil. I play mostly the guitar, but also all other instruments and vocals on my tracks, plus I do the production.
