Joining us for the 5th edition of the Phonica Friends & Family Mix Series we have Ukrainian DJ and producer Bohdan.

Bohdan is one-half of the Kyiv-based electronic music duo Asyncronous. These guys first came to our attention with their critically acclaimed debut release ‘The Art of Fighting In A Dream’ on Berlin-based label Slow Life. The release was a firm favourite of ours over here at Phonica, it provided the soundtrack to many days in the shop throughout the year and we went on to include it in our top ten ‘Best Singles of 2019’ feature. In fact, we liked it so much that we reached out to the pair to see if they would be interested in putting together an EP for our own label. The result was the excellent ‘Pangaea Nova’ EP, which is comprised of six deeply atmospheric techno and ambient soundscapes, each packed with scattering drums, dubbed-out synths and syncopated basslines. 

Bohdan’s artistic career blossomed during the mid-2000s. He initially started out as a Drum & Bass DJ and organiser of many significant events around Kyiv. Several years ago he delved into the world of music production, with a focus on “atmospheric, mental techno and its various manifestations” as he describes it.

His DJ sets, as well as his own productions, cover many bases – from organic atmospheres and spatial sound landscapes to functional, intense, and hypnotic techno cuts. Bohdan’s 2-hour long mix recording below reflects this perfectly. Enjoy!

We continue our podcast love affair with French artists with another rising star in Nemo Vachez. If you have been paying attention this week you will have noticed that we have been showing some serious love to Nemo and rightly so. His debut album has just dropped on his co-ran buy on sight imprint Forest Ill Records and true to form it manages to shoe horn in a wide swathe of genres across the 4 x 12” LP. From chunky electro, low slung beats, nasty riddims, and our recent premiere “Hey DJ (Radio Mix)” which squeezes in a mind bending amount of samples into its run time. 

There is also the label itself, founded by Idris Bena, Nadir Sanchez, Steve Didion, and of course Nemo Vachez has been a constant source of fire. Nemo is more than just the co-owner of a really great label, he regularly drops slabs of science on labels such as Rakya Records, Opia, and Lowmoneymusiclove. These skills just happen to transfer nicely into the DJ booth and this takes the Parisian artist far and wide.

Moving onto the mix, and after a sultry lead in, the disco pressure is applied at just the right level. Cowbells, piano licks, deep probing basslines, all have their space at the controls of Nemo Vachez. As you might expect, there is a huge amount of musical content transferred into Vachez’s mix, but it never feels over-saturated or too busy. Just when the energy levels peak, Nemo pulls it back and slaps a funky bassline down and a new avenue opens up..
