Premiered/Live Recorded Dec. 1, 2013, by Dr. James Hall (Trombone) and Stephen Coxe (Piano) at Old Dominion University.

Program Notes: The horn player in me makes it difficult for me to admit, simply, I think the trombone is a beast, a monster, a force to be reckoned with. The word beast has many connotations and is explored in this concert work for solo trombone and piano. Trombone Beast Suite also is based on the visage of some powerful animal, like a lion, being inspired somewhat by Blake’s The Tyger, and each movement displays a particular characteristic. “Tempered Beast” (the prelude) explores the potential energy and power that remains dormant. “Wild Beast” (dance) is a fury of primitive spirit without any aggression or brutality. “Sleeping Beast” (lullaby) is simply the beast asleep, which has a much more beautiful quality then its dormant and restrained self. “Naughty Beast” (waltz) is comical, humorous and can be described as a cute little lion cub meandering around. How curious is this cat? “Raging Beast” (toccata) explores the unrelenting power, strength, and ferocity of a beast.

With a load of fresh new material, MarchFourth enters some new sonic territories on this album, and channel some deep swampy voodoo vibes seeped in the brassy NOLA traditions. Guest artists include Stanton Moore on the song "Push It Back" as well as Trombone Shorty blowing a fiery solo on "Inventing the Wheel" 

MarchFourth will continue to tour all over the United States in support of this album through the fall  and into 2017 with their bombastic stage show full of energy and movement.

In this show Michael, Elias, and Griffith are joined by a new face, Titus, to discuss Troy Andrews, known by his stage nickname 'Trombone Shorty. This talented brass player is at the forefront of New Orleans-style jazz/funk in the 21st century. Since his debut album hit stores in 2010, Andrews has done wonders to bring the music popularized by the likes of Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton back into the public eye. Everything about his music, from the use of second-line beats to virtuosic soloing on both the trombone and trumpet, reminds listeners of the music that helped define American culture.
