Billy's Blues

Paige & The Thousand is the brainchild of ex-Or, The Whale singer/songwriter Lindsay Paige Garfield. With two EPs and a steady run of live performances in the Bay Area, Los Angeles and Argentina, Lindsay has built an extraordinary catalog of haunting contemporary folk songs that are smart, soulful and honest (and gathered up a network of incredible musicians to help her realize them.) The extensive touring  and recording experience with Or, The Whale (with whom she has toured internationally and played the Fillmore Auditorium, NPR's Mountain Stage, SXSW, The Treasure Island Music Festival, and live on Good Morning America), has earned her a powerful and road-hardened stage presence to match a voice beyond her years.

Originally from Massachusetts, Lindsay made her way to California after studying music at the University of Miami. A lifelong love of singing was deepened in Miami via the opportunity to record for free, and cemented in the Bay Area when she met the friends with whom she would form Or, The Whale. 

With the dissolution of Or, The Whale, the drive to explore her artistry as a solo artist was first realized on the 2012 EP, We Are Now The Times (the title taken from a Peter Handke poem used in Wim Wenders' film The Wings of Desire. Her song “Let’s Descend” from the same EP is also inspired by the film.)
A true collaborative effort, the EP was co-written with Kirk Hamilton (fellow Univ. of Miami School of Music alum), featured initial production by Jeremy D'Antonio at Magnolia Records in Novato, CA, and gathered up the contributions of ten musicians playing about twenty different instruments.  Members of Or, the Whale, Tiny Television, as well as Blake Mills (Norah Jones, Fiona Apple), Patrick Warren (Bob Dylan, Aimee Mann), and producer  Mike Feingold (Erykah Badu, Jay-Z, Queen Latifah) took part.

2015’s The Call represents a simultaneous deepening and broadening of her craft, the melodic and intimate lyrical gifts intact as the musical palette continues to grow. Recorded with Jeremy D’Antonio and a batch of musicians outside of her usual live collaborators, the goal was to keep the songs fresh and open to new interpretations.  “I'm truly spoiled by the time and talents of my live bandmates,” says Garfield, “I just really liked the idea of recording the songs with a cast who had never heard them before. Once you know a song, it's hard to separate lyrics and chords from the arrangement. They become glued together as one entity. I wanted to see what would happen if we started from the bare bones and worked our way out.” One song, "Crack a Smile", was written by Alex Robins and comes from her days in Or, the Whale.  It's a deeply personal song, about Alex’s younger brother Sean, who passed away from cancer at the age of 19, and a song that Garfield has kept close with the intention of recording her own powerful version – “I'm grateful that he (Alex) gave me permission.” “Spin Your Stars” is a co-write with Bradley Skaught of The Bye Bye Blackbirds, whom Garfield has collaborated and performed with for over three years in both Paige & The Thousand and The Bye Bye Blackbirds.  The version on The Call represents a very different take than the version that appears on The Bye Bye Blackbirds’ We Need The Rain album: “I love the idea of two versions of a co-written song out in the world at the same time. Bradley plays acoustic on my version, and I sing backgrounds on his.” From its sophisticated, haunting title track to the shimmering, disco-inflected “Avalanche”, The Call is overflowing with imagination, invention and melody. And at its core, the voice Performer Magazine’s Katherine Hoffert describes as,  “a woman's voice - there's not a hint of Lolita flirt in her warm, honest tones".
