PAIJATA @ Netil Radio | 14/04/2021

This month was a big step for the show, and for me, personally, as a growing musician: being unable to reach a mixer for this edition of the show, I was faced with either learning to mix using Ableton, or missing the show. Instead, I prepared a collection of my experiments with creating music of my own.

Whilst this did offer me a chance to showcase the music from the recent PAIJATA film, made by myself alongside filmmaker Rebecca Salvadori and musician @OliverTorr (time-stamped in comments), it also offered me a chance to grow outside of mixing music, and create my own compositions within the working constraints of a rather short timeframe.

I have always been afraid to make music, for fear of it being judged long before I've even begun, and this was a helpful challenge in getting past this fear. Whilst the music is far less polished than the music I typically share on the show, I feel it still aligns with my idea of what PAIJATA should share, and also serves as a reminder to myself that music should never be about its position against that made by others, but as a reflection and growth of the self. 

I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed creating.

Summer breaks through. This episode of PAIJATA is for the heat of the day and the cool of the shade, for the lengthening of evenings. Skin, and touch, after so much time. 

Features moments of live performance, using the Bastl Thyme to play with sound sources from Monolake, Pablo Diserens, and Sofie Birch. These are biased to the left channel, making the mix best suited for playback on speakers, with open windows and a flowing breeze.

PAIJATA @ Netil Radio | 11/08/2021

After a long time away from the booth in Netil Radio in London, PAIJATA finally came home for a special show alongside @Avsluta.

Quite genuinely and without hyperbole, I couldn't think of a better first partner or guest for PAIJATA. Not only has her music been a staple of the show's tracklistings throughout winter and summer, but her own Netil Radio show @Introspective_Electronics demonstrates a clear mutual understanding between our opinion of what consititutes "ambient" music.

Across these two hours we dance around the decks, bounding from somnambulist dronescapes into beat-laden dance music which I rarely draw for on my solo shows.

PAIJATA w/ Avsluta @ Netil Radio | 13/10/2021

Another slightly different journey for PAIJATA this month, which perhaps reflects well the change in seasons, and a readjustment of priorities that seems to go hand in hand with the cooling temperatures. 

The mix was assembled after three days spent recording whatever happens in my room during the evenings. From favourite records (I was recently reunited with a portion of my collection) to recent releases that grabbed my ears, processed through desktop effects units, and swiftly improvised works on modular and synth.  

The aim is to provide something that sits closer to a "proper" radio show and less of a DJ mix where I use adjustable-speed turntables/CDJs to affect playback. Therefore, nothing in the show is beatmatched (intentionally), reflecting a musical stroll through autumnal realms.

PAIJATA @ Netil Radio | 10/11/21

Towards the end of last year Acid Coffee (top coffee tip for Prague visitors) asked me to play their Acid Ambient event series, and I asked @Tobleronchik to play for an hour also.

A resident at @KavePrague, I'd caught a few of her sets over the summer, but mostly my experience of her sound was more dancefloor focussed (she plays a killer selection of electro) — however, we'd talked about ambient music and her journey in finding more of it that fits her tastes, and I felt she'd be a perfect fit for a gloomy overcast evening at the tail end of the year, which she definitely delivered.

Featuring plenty of overcast shoegaze-y dreampop, her set is a slow burning one, one which manages to warm the insides despite leaning heavily into the wintry mood. Grab a cup of something warm and a good book, and let this ease you into the new year.

Although the party atmosphere is something quite far away from the past episodes, I still see this music as parallel, or even adjacent, to a lot of the "ambient" music played to date. A nearly-complete recording of my solo set for Wildt in Prague, held on a warm-as-summer May Sunday, that was very special for me. Coming off a rolling high from playing a much harder club set the night before, this was more beat-driven than usual, but squeezes in plenty of ambient gold and classic summer cuts to travel between BPM and mood.

The 22nd episode of PAIJATA leans into liquid dance music, flickering breaks and lightweight pads. Four channels, one take, an improvised meditation on ambient music as rave-adjacent, and vice versa. 

What happened to the ambient B-rooms, where anything goes? Inspired by reading about the ambient party scene in the 90's, this mix is designed to give space to the off-kilter tracks that can power a nightclub as well as they can soundtrack an afternoon spent inbetween a busy and productive mood, and relaxing with little cares and a spring in your step.

Recorded for @Ankali Summer Cinema viewing of 'Koyaanisqatsi' (1982), scored by Phillip Glass. 

Sounds, selections and mixing informed by concepts of music outlined in David Toop's book 'Ocean of Sound', and of analysis and reinterpretation of the original score — music as vibration, sound as guidance and colour. Improvised conceptual play with sound art, field recordings, cutting-edge dance and listening musics potent at painting imaginative environments.

An abridged version was first aired on London's Netil Radio 14 September '22 along with a guest mix from Florian T M Zeisig.

PAIJATA @ Ankali Summer Cinema | 20/7/22

PAIJATA turns 2 years old! 

25 months of two-hour broadcasts (only dropping out once, in January, I think it can be forgiven), over 50 hours of music. To date, this project is easily the one I'm most proud of in over 8 years of making radio shows. It's been far from easy, and many times I've considered leaving this project behind, but I'm happy with where PAIJATA stands at it's second year of existence. 

From this month onwards I'll be hosting mini-mixes from friends and those I admire in the field of "ambient" music, and I can't wait to share those with you. Thanks for staying close throughout this journey — I hope the next year is the best to come. 

For the anniversary show, I selected a perhaps broader range of music, still trying to blur those already blurry lines between club music and music for different states of listening.

PAIJATA @ Netil Radio | 10.08.22

PAIJATA owes a lot to @ftmzeisig — from first hearing his Coatcheck album through enmossed in 2020 Florian's music has been deeply embedded in the show's psyche, and his music has been on the show more than any other single artist. 

So, when thinking of who to ask to make a mix for the series, his name naturally came at the front of the list. Originally aired on Netil Radio, Florian's mix oscillates between moods and identities, but never in quality. If you caught the Walking mix for enmossed, you'll have some idea of the vibe. Tuck in, roll up, phase out.

Florian T M Zeisig | PAIJATA Guests on Netil 20/07/22

Lisbon's @usofusofusofusof (née UNITEDSTATESOF) has been an artist on my to-watch list for a long time. First knowingly coming into contact after hearing his remix for Florian T M Zeisig's Coatcheck remixes, I realised afterwards that his music has been in the subcurrent of the ambient fields I've been interested in for a long time. 

After the 'usof' rebrand, and encountering a mix via sometimes-local ambient comrade @sonic_fiction I dug further and discovered usof's fingerprints sprawling across my taste of music: from Swan Meat and Odete released on @rottenfresh to the @wesurf netlabel and the somehow-legendary-yet-somehow-underground @living_roooom event and mix series in Lisbon. 

usof's mix here is a perfect combination of hallucinogenic autumnal ambient and careening, sidereal psychoacoustic bombs. Drift music that doesn't disappear from your consciousness.

@slowfoam approaches sound in a tender way in their music and their mixes alike. There's a certain warmth beneath which carries the mind to rest. This mix is no exception. Grand themes and Infinitesimal details are blurred into form with a gentle guidance, not a firm hand. 

Slowfoam has a radio show with Internet Public Radio, and has just released an album on Lillerne Tapes alongside production partner Neilll that I highly recommend diving into.

Since first hearing their music via Portland's Boomarm Nation imprint, @SaintAbdullah have forged a space in my music taste with each of their releases. Individuality — demonstrated as a concept of existence more than just musical practice — exists at the core of everything they do, and it is utterly entrenched in the pair's sound. 

This individuality is borne the most by their explorations of self: the duo have lived the most of their life in the West, in the US and Canada, yet they come from an Iranian family. They explore the sometimes troubling existence as (descendants of) migrants who left their home country to make a new home for their children in the West. Brothers Moh & Mehdi unpack this — nothing shy of their existence on Earth — in all its complexity, across albums such as 'To Live A La West' on @importantrecords, 'Where do we go, Now?' on @purpletapepedigree and 'In God's Image' on @PsychicLiberation. Consequently, their sound can be rough-edged, furious, distraught, even, and almost inherently political ("Broke my Heart in '52" / "Problem" / "Mossadegh's revenge for '52"), yet it is broad in its reach and contains a pervading and direct distillation of humanity - endurance, suffering, joy, peace, and solidarity - throughout all they have accomplished. 

I'm quite overwhelmed to be be presenting "the people who initiate a new world", a beat tape/mix created by the pair consisting of original and unheard productions, "instrumental in parts. Lots of variety. Projects with @eomac, with @jasonnazary, and stuff by ourselves". Quote from Havel and photograph from the duo.

Freddie Hudson @ Here and There NYE | 1/1/23

Ukrainian DJ and Kyiv-based producer Saltyskin came to my attention for the music made under a different alias - @xtclvr - whose recent self-released EP has found its way into many different types of set from myself. After reaching out for a mix, I was pleasantly floored when the second alias, Saltyskin, emerged for the task. 

While there's a clear sonic distinction between the Saltyskin experience on this mix and the deep, churned-up trap/ambient music I loved from xtclvr, this mix hits the spot for PAIJATA's recent visions of top-rate dance music flecked with ambient dusting in the quieter moments — strap in and hold tight.

The latest guest mix for PAIJATA comes from none other than @odai-masri, founder and curator of Exist Festival, the Palestinian electronic music festival in Ramallah / Palestine. 

Exist is a festival and event series founded in Palestine, with the aim of building bridges between artists, musicians, DJs and curators from Palestine and across the globe. Its broad, transnational family are united in a desire to use art to impact their environments in critical ways, and through their engagement with anti-colonialism in the context of Palestine and beyond.

Odai also runs Harara records, and, as we hear, is a fantastic DJ.

patricccio | PAIJATA Guests on Netil Radio 12/07/23

Based out of Istanbul, DJ Strawberry is a fairly new name on the block, but is making huge waves in the dance music scene. His album 'Cycles' through the ever-exceptional @outlineslabel out of Poland in September of last year was a masterclass in (predominantly) 160bpm constructions, pacey yet introspective, riding rushing rhythms with a slow gait, allowing room for body and mind to make their own interpretations. 

His mix for PAIJATA does much the same: flitting through ambient polyrhythmic joys (such as the teased FFT track) and on into international dance beats such as the recently released Nakibembe Embare Group, Strawberry's PAIJATA is not one for sitting still to.

I first heard @dj_bricks playing in a cellar-esque space beneath a huge tree: an almost secret stage at an almost secret party. BRICKS is a slice of genuine magic, both on the decks and off them. I could go on and on, really, but instead I'll leave this mix to do (most of) the talking. 

When I set up the guestmix series for PAIJATA I had a kinda specific vision, and each guest has provided me with their own take on that vision (which is what I wanted all along). But, BRICKS' Retrograde Pleasures strikes me right in the spot that triggered the whole journey with PAIJATA in the first place. Mega love for this... enjoy.

2023's final PAIJATA is a live recording taken from the incredibly inspiring event organised by AVA Kolektiv in Brno, with Ulla headlining. The space was beautifully decorated with rugs and cozy blinking lights, and the neon of the shopping district all around us fuzzed through the windows. Big highlight of the year, and delighted to share the recording.

‘Paijata’ [English Pron. “PIE-ya-ta] is a Finnish word which captures a sensation which I believe almost all of us long for, yet can rarely place into words. 

It describes quiet and loving stroking of the skin from one who loves you: gentle fingers exploring soft canvas, curling around hair, holding a body closer to yours. 

In its absence, life can be rough; within its embrace, the world gains a softer edge. 

This is the vision for PAIJATA, the label — a place to rest for those in need of it, a warm hand on a cold heart.

The music on PAIJATA will all be bound with one thread of two ends: music composed to either embellish those moments — lying in a bed with another who is close to your heart, cherishing their form — or to conjure the sensation for those without that company. 

The interpretation is left entirely up to the artist, to you. Within just this one circumstance there is endless depth and nuance to explore, unique to every combination of individuals. For some it will be purely peaceful; for others there may be conflict or unrest, internally or externalised. All possible roads can be taken. 

The content could take the form of a mixtape of songs you’d make love to, or an original 60-minute album that sonically explores in exquisite detail the very core of what sharing skin with another represents to the human condition. Perhaps it's both.

It’s all in your hands.

For my part, this concept mix was my initial contribution, a freestyle mix designed to conjure a form of inspiration that can stretch beyond description. 

Within, I’ve attempted to create a form of guide for two people to explore one another. There are imperfections, moments where the music leaps out and overpowers the mix, symbolising an exchange of dominance; there are carefully selected moments slowly falling into balance, and periods of asynchronism that are also harmonious. 

I hope that it resonates with you.
