Brazil enters the pop race with Pale Sunday, a lovely little jingle-jangle pop group. Their singer has this lovely, affecting voice, made even more saucy by his accent! At times, they sound like a South American Lucksmiths, which, believe me, couldn't possibly be a bad thing! "A Weekend With Jane" kicks off the single, and oooooh, it's dreamy! "Go Ahead" is a bit more rockin', though "Today" slows things down and gets a little more romantic. "The Girl With Sunny Smile" ends with a P!o!p!, and I'm enthralled and, once again, left eager for their next record! Hurry hurry, Jimmy Matinée! Single Of The Week. (Mundane Sounds)

This enterprise of mine, shouting my mouth off about my favourite records, it was born of frustration originally. You’d hear something wonderful and look around for affirmation from other sources and find nothing – at least nothing locally. So you have to do it yourself and hope you’re the affirmation for someone else. Me and you honey, we’re like islands of sanity while all the bullets are flying, blood is flowing, black oils gush through pipelines, and the rich get richer and poor get poorer. This Pale Sunday single might well get lost in the slew, the river of plastic and cardboard that gets released every week, ignored against the larger backdrop, the tidal wave of hype. But it’s this sort of record I find the most motivational and uplifting. Firstly, ‘A Weekend With Jane’ is simply a joyous pop song all about love and being in love and seeing someone and falling in love. But it’s also the title, the typefaces, the sleeve, the aura. For some reason my mind keeps rearranging the name ‘Jane’ to “Jean’, further exacerbating an impossible love of Jean Seberg. It’s probably lust, you’d say, and it won’t do no good cos she’s dead and gone. But I can’t get that bedroom scene from A Bout de Souffle out of my head. Pale Sunday give it a soundtrack. I’ve been hearing good vibes about Brazilian guitar pop for a couple of years or so now. Well, here’s the confirmation. Wonderful. (Wide Open Road #10)

Pale Sunday is from Brazil, and trades in pleasant, guitar-based indie pop. The vocals are sensitive, the guitars strummed politely, the drums lightly tippy-tapped (probably by machines), the synths set on weepy orchestra. The four songs on the group's debut EP breeze past on a cloud of pleasant nostalgia for bands like the Chesterfields, the Field Mice, and East Village -- bands that jangled nicely and harmonized and wore sweaters. The members of Pale Sunday probably don't wear a lot of sweaters, but their music does. Even when they rock out a little on the single's best track, the catchy and most Sarah Records-sounding -- no, make that most Sunday Records-sounding -- "The Girl With the Sunny Smile," it is done in such a way that no one's beverage of choice is likely to be upset, much less toppled. If you like your indie pop by the book and Charlie Brown sweet, Pale Sunday is a band to keep your eyes open for. (All Music Guide)

A trio from Brazil playing perfectly toned English pop, now let’s face it that don’t happen that often so time to make merry while it lasts. A debut release that on first hearing sounds nice, and yes I do mean that in a tad derogatory manner until that is the third track ‘Today’ where upon something magical happens and forces you to reconsider your initial gut feelings. Pale Sunday, a name quite fitting as their songs do have a strange chemistry that marries upbeat pop to downcast storylines making it ultimately appear as though the band permanently walk beneath gloomy clouds or ride off in search of storms to annoy. Again like the Razorcuts it’s by and large all about jangly guitars with the prevalent air of C-86 shimmering brightly throughout. ‘Today’ wrapped in sugary string arrangements all set off over a seriously twisting bass line takes a laid back teasingly sophisticated approach that overall gives it then edge among the quartet of tunes on offer. That said ‘the girl with sunny smile’ points to rainy afternoons stuck indoors watching the days drift away listening to old Bus Stop, Sarah and Summershine records, ostensibly American sounding, very much with a plural hint of Chris Stamey, the Mayflies and a more pop orientated Moviola, fizzing guitars and jabbing hook lines and very tasty with it, while ‘Go Ahead’ has that same emotionally stinging resonance as Another Sunny Day. Leave the disc playing a little longer after the closing track to hear a bonus un-credited cut recorded onto a female friends answer machine, stripped down and pretty much in the BMX Bandits / Speedboat scheme of things, in other words quite dandy. Pale Sunday may hail from Brazil but their musical style is nothing short of pure British indie-pop. A Weekend with Jane is acoustic guitar-driven goodness that only lasts for thirteen minutes and thirty-four seconds. This release will certainly earn the band comparisons to Belle and Sebastian. I first slipped A Weekend with Jane into the player on the day the East Coast rain finally stopped and everyone in the world emerged, pale and knobby-kneed, into the belated summer sunshine. I drove the CD around through preternaturally verdant hills dotted with neon dandelions and smelling unearthly sweet. It was, I felt, the only way to break a long winter's worth of difficulty, to pop it all in a single rainbow-colored bubble. It worked. Pale Sunday is a near perfect soft pop band. They are Belle and Sebastian with a heart-breaking grin. They are the Smiths all through with irony and truly, madly, deeply in love. They are from Brazil, and I tell you this only because you won't know it otherwise. They sing in utterly unaccented English, hailing from an imaginary country abutted by California and bisected by the Mersey. Their jangling guitars and gentle, percolating drumbeats have not a whiff of tropical flavor, and yet there is something undeniably warm and sunny about A Weekend with Jane. There are just four tracks here (five if you include a brief throwaway hidden after a silence in cut four), and every one has a shimmering life to it. "A Weekend with Jane" is jangly, gangly vulnerability, the hushed main voice countered with glowing guitar and intoxicating sha-la backup. "Go Ahead" bubbles with Shame About Rayish lemony energy, while "Today" is quietly, gently luminous. "The Girl with the Sunny Smile", the most Belle and Sebastian-like of the four, is all undulating melody and pulsing power pop beat. The fifth, hidden track, less than a minute long, is lo-fi and plaintive, asking "Why don't you love me instead of hate me? / Why don't you kiss me instead of kick me?" If you've been getting more than your share of kicks, A Weekend With Jane might be just the record to turn things around. (Splendid)

pale sunday's fatal but understandable faux pas is being from brazil in 2003 rather than bristol in 1986, but they overcome this gamely with our joint favourite single from this mass of 45s. their first outing for matinée is actually tight, focused, jangly indie, drawing much from the pristine international tradition of compatriots brincando de deus as well as the european likes of brideshead and aerospace, and bookended with the two best tunes, a title song that skips tunefully and daintily through sunlit streets before one of those great two-note closing guitar lines, and the final track "the girl with sunny smile" which is a storming indie pop number, made by the second guitar part which curves into the chorus and smilingly deployed "sha-la-las", turning this reviewer for its duration into the boy with sunny smile. if you're looking for something with a bit of edge, pale sunday may be unable to provide it, but otherwise you are unlikely to have any complaints to the management. Apparently Postal Blue is not the only fabulous Brazilian indiepop group. Oh dear, just how incredible this 'A Weekend With Jane' by Pale Sunday really is. I've listened to it about dozen times during the weekend. It's a new release by the ever lovely Matinée Recordings. If you have any interest in jangly indie pop, you'll love this. Oh my. This was an instant love affair. With some albums, it takes a while to really fall for them. But with 'Summertime?', the debut album of brazillian indie pop band Pale Sunday, it was love at first hearing. I admit that Pale Sunday may not be for everyone. They don't deliver much musical or lyrical challenge. If you are an art music follower who wants to ponder the essence of things, you can just keep reading about Josef K or watch Last Year at Marienbad. This is simple and perfect pop music. The album divides itself into two parts for me. The first five songs are jangly pop hits about girls, girls and well girls. Addictive songs with shiny choruses. First they want to get to know a girl who is playing the tambourine and secondly they want to impress Mary by wearing a Pastels badge. While the first half continues they also want to take Pam outdoors to feel the morning light and introduce a punk rock girlfriend. That 'My Punk Girl' reminds me of legendary finnish pop song 'Warriorette' by Ben's Diapers which was about heavy metal girlfriend who hated pop eternally. On the second part of the album Pale Sunday slowes down a bit and provide five dazzlingly beautiful songs. And while I adore the first half a lot, this latter half is even more amazing. Some can really turn simple chords and simple lyrics into something magical. You don't exactly have to be a poet to come up with a line "hold me / carry me in your arms / and before i sleep / tell me one more time / i'm not in a free fall", but it's amazing how touching it can sound when you wrap it up in the most beautiful melody and sing it with an angelic voice that seem so true and honest. This is a great summer soundtrack and one of the best indie pop albums in 2005. I myself will probably remember this album for as long as I live. That may have also some personal reasons behind it and not just the greatness of this album. (One Chord To Another)

Hurray for the return of Pale Sunday, and what a return. ‘Summertime?’ is easily the best indie pop album of the year so far. Y’know when you hear a record and you instantly know it’s gonna be good? Well, you don’t even have to hear this one…one look at it will tell you how special it is. From the packaging and the everso twee message on the back, to the chimes of ‘Never Fall Apart’, the soaring beauty of ‘She’ll Be Mine’ or the perfect pop of ‘Mary’. Brazil may have never had a better band. If you think this is hyperbole, then you’d be wrong. After all, I tend to give just about every Matinée release a cracking review, but then that’s because they’re usually brilliant records. Likewise, Pale Sunday have always greased my monkey – but that’s because they’ve always released utterly gorgeous records that it’s so easy to fall in love with. Pop music doesn’t have to be complicated, you see. In dark days, everyone needs a crutch. Pale Sunday are mine. (Tasty)

Summertime?… Seems like an appropriate question; weather can be so back-and-forth these days that it's hard to tell what season we're in. Or maybe the title of Pale Sunday's album is a different sort of question, like "Anyone up for summertime? Summertime, anyone?" Of course, summer is the perfect season for great breezy pop songs of this variety: songs that are catchy, pretty, light-as-air, and fun, yet with a hint of melancholy strong enough to account for summer heartbreak, lonely days, and disappointment. An enigmatic letter on the album's back cover describes summer like this: "Summer days make things better, summer days make things worse, summer days make me think about you a lot and want to stay with you all day long." Yes, if you can't tell, the members of Pale Sunday are romantics. Indeed, pretty much every song on the album is directed to a girl, an object of affection but also mystery. "Who's that girl playing the white tambourine," the singer asks at the start of the album, shyly yet with awe. Listening to her play the tambourine, he feels like he could fly. Is she real, is she a dream? He doesn't know, but she makes him feel happy. At the same time, he's worried she'll soon be gone. That mix of feelings – that combination of awe and fear, fascination and confusion, joy and unsteadiness – is at the heart of Pale Sunday's music. Not just the lyrics, it's in their sound. The Brazilian trio, in love with rock and pop sounds galore, has a wonderfully acute ear for melody, and also the ability to generate a mood that's compassionate, mysterious, and bittersweet at the same time. That complicated feeling is in the expressive singing, in the deceptively simple song writing, and in the way they play their beloved guitars. Summertime? is filled with infatuation – for a "punk rock girl", for a girl singing songs about Twiggy – but behind it lies both a childlike celebration of the world around us and a deep longing for some reassurance that the brilliant joy of summer isn't going to disappear. The ideal world in Pale Sunday's universe is one where the good times play out in slow motion, where the ideal summer never ends. There's a real sense of idealism in these songs, and along with it the ever-present specter of disappointment. The second half of the album is marked by that real-life sadness, from the passionate goodbye song "She'll Never Be Mine" through to the gorgeous "Strangeways." That album-ending narrative is in turns both hopeful and not, as it follows the meeting of two hearts ("a perfect moment"), and their parting ("dreams seem so far away"). Stylistically the scene set is fantastical yet also charged with real emotion, like everything on Summertime?. Pale Sunday have a way to make magic out of tears, and vice versa. Their music at times is as joyous as music can possibly be, but inside sadness is always lurking. The possibility of endless happiness is always there, but the reality of disappointment is too. After a couple stunning EPs - one self-released and one on Matinée - this superb Brazilian trio has finally released a full album! And naturally, it's packed full of instant hits! These ten songs combine the best of indiepop influences: the classic jangle of the Orchids, the shimmering guitars of Razorcuts (and a bit of their playfulness, too!), a hint of East Village's wistful melancholy and the hushed vocal style of Club 8 (only with a male singer), along with a mere hint of British shoegaze (see the swirly guitar and organ in the closing "Strangeways"). "My Punk Girl" sounds like it could've been recorded by any of today's finest young Swedish pop bands, like the Danny Says or Happy Birthdays. The only time I found my attention drifting was during the more pedestrian ballad, "A Safe Place", but apart from that, this is a fine debut album! (IndiePages)

I have a hard time resisting sweet, innocent wholesome indiepop. When the singer’s sincere and sweet and the words are heartfelt, I’ll admit—I’m a goner. That’s why I’m admitting to being a total, utter swoonin’ fool over Brazil’s indiepop kings Pale Sunday. This trio has a sound that will satiate the sweetest of pop fixations; the music is sweetly simple and simply sweet, full of all the things that make great pop music great: jingle-jangle guitars, tambourines, hand-claps and crooning. Really, we were suckers for their debut EP, but that didn’t prepare us for the ten songs found on their debut Summertime?; there was simply no way we could have known these three romantics could have made a breathtaking record that captures the essence of youth. From the heartbreak of “She’ll Never Be Mine” to the joyous “Sunday Morning” and the simply dreamy “Never Fall Apart” and “Mary,” Pale Sunday doesn’t try to overwhelm the listener with heavy-handed topics. Every member of the threesome takes turn writing songs, and that creates a nice variety of the very simple themes to be found: love, crushes, heartbreak, holding hands and enjoying music. More importantly, these songs are about enjoying life, the experiences of life, and the elements that make human existence wonderful: emotion. Their music may be simple and it might sound like it’s about to fall apart, but underneath the clutter and the racket is the heart of a really great young band. This is music for mix-tapes made by young men who know the magic of mix-tape making, and if there are other bands making this kind of charming indiepop, I really don’t care to know…I’m in love with Pale Sunday now. The short list of great indie albums of all time must now be added `Summertime?` by Pale Sunday. Released last April on world famous indie label Matinée Recordings, it is truly the hottest indie album that ever came out from a South American outfit. This amazing piece of work is a perfect musical expression. These guys are so talented and focused on their music that they came out with a concept album to spread their love around. And it spreads. The splendid lyrics and superb voice of lead singer Luiz Gustavo makes the rich melodies sound as it should sound: happy and colored. It`s perfect listening when you`re on the move. Lead guitarist Sineval Almeida also shows his drawing skills in the cover which features original artwork all made by himself. The fine pop art comes in a very nice package with a charming message in the back, and, just because of that, you will want to own one. It can be fun to listen to it at home in a pale Sunday afternoon. It`s also suitable before going to work in a pale boring Monday morning. For that "Twiggy Superstar" is the suggestion. Or just get in the car and then just drive, listening to the standout track "Mary" and let it hit. So let`s just get in the car and let`s just drive because this band is on the verge of being huge. Pale Sunday first came into my life when their glorious 'A Weekend with Jane' ep shimmied its way through my letterbox almost a decade ago amidst a period of serious upheaval. It's fair to say that back then it was a ray of light, and the band have remained that way since. Even when they let me down by not turning up for Indietracks the year before last. It's easy to forget Pale Sunday, to be honest; stuck in Brazil they've never toured Europe, and so it's left to my good comrade Jimmy at Matinée Recordings to keep in touch with them, and put their records out now and again. 'The Fake Stories About You and Me' is Pale Sunday's strongest release since those nascent days of 2003, with four songs that, whilst hardly tread a new path, are definitely more confident, rounded, and affecting that at most times since that first Matinée release. 'Happy (When You Lived Here)' is a fair heartbreaking tale of broken relationships and starting over - but ultimately hope, and it's that hope that almost makes the guitars break loose at times. Pale Sunday are too cute for that, of course, and the melancholy harmonies return. It's a majestic three minutes, but it's probably best you don't listen to it if you're having a hard time at home. 'About Your Life' perhaps should've been the lead track, but who cares where it is; I'm just glad it's here. Built around a guitar riff that will worm its way into your life for days and days, it's just thing to perk you up after the bitterness of the previous track and hints at a love of Teenage Fanclub or mid-period Ride.'That's the Way' further illustrates a love of early-90s guitar manglers and is all the better for it (it even goes a bit shoegaze on the fade out), whilst Pale Sunday revert to type on 'The Winter Song' - a paean to the shortest day, and perhaps one of those clever metaphors about change and upheaval and all that jazz. Like everything about indiepop, it's a small miracle that this record exists at all, but it does and that's wonderful. Here's hoping Pale Sunday continue to soundtrack the lives of people everywhere.   -- A Layer of Chips

Brazilian indiepop band Pale Sunday have been consistently producing the goods for a decade now with most of their releases on US label Matinée Recordings. These include 2010's Shooting Star EP which is one of my favourite releases that the label has put out to date. The band draw their inspiration from what is now lazily referred to as the C86 sound whether that would be on Sarah Records circa 1988 or found on Swedish labels like Labrador two decades later. Normally I would deride a band whose sound has remained somewhat static for a decade but thankfully The Fake Stories About You And Me EP is more of the same. If you like fuzzy shimmering pop music about unrequited love then you are in the right place. Opener Happy (When You Lived Here) features delicious harmonies teaming up with Gustavo's melancholic vocals that excel at storytelling (oh er pun alert!). The guitar on About Your Life sound like they were lifted from The Shop Assistants Big E Power but that's no bad thing as the song buzzes along somewhat nicely. That's The Way starts off as a generic indiepop song but it soon gets going and you are soon nodding, blissfully unaware, along. It's on the gentler songs that the band excel and The Winter Song is no exception. I am not sure what winters are like in Brazil but I am not sure they're as beautiful as this melodic, sentimental and almost orchestral closer complete with mournful vocals and strumming guitar. Whilst there is nothing new soundwise here (if it ain't broke) The Fake Stories About You And Me EP is a rather fine EP which is definitely worth listening to.   --Sounds XP

Brazilian indiepop masters Pale Sunday offer up four splendid examples of their genre with new EP 'The Fake Stories About You And Me'. The list of references and bands they recall might be a long one but they choose their influences well and write songs that would brighten up a lot of the records they've evolved from. 'Happy (When You Lived Here)' is a typical fey, floppy-fringed jangle that might as well have been written in a Glasgow bedsit in 1986. The melody could be lifted from an early Belle & Sebastian track, it's a song that spans generations of guitar-pop and you'll find echoes of your favourite Swedish, C86-influenced group in there - whoever they might be. There's a touch more muscle on 'About Your Life' and the guitars, with something almost approaching a riff, are allowed to buzz like Teenage Fanclub with softer vocals. 'That's The Way' is maybe the least impressive until it unveils a chorus that lifts the whole song. Perfect EP closing material is delivered with the maudlin 'The Winter Song' with its sentimental lyrics and crisply strummed guitar, later to be joined by subtle strings, just enough to take things up a notch or two. You can definitely see where the Wannadies comparisons come from, and if you only know them for 'You & Me Song' then you're truly missing out and need to investigate further. After you've given this Pale Sunday EP a few dozen plays that is.   --The Sound of Confusion

You can put all your preconceived notions about music in Brazil to the side now. Pale Sunday are nothing like CSS or Bonde Do Role. While I appreciate the regional flavor of those acts, The Fake Stories About You and Me seems so distant; it’s an album of pristine guitar pop in the realm of bands like Lucksmiths or Nada Surf–it’s somewhere in the middle there. It’s a short EP, but “Happy (When You Lived Here)” is perhaps going to be one of my favorite guitar tracks of the year; it’s easiest the best track from the band that I’ve heard to date. Luis’ voice sounds incredible here; it’s calm and cool, yet there’s a smoothness that coincides with the rest of the music. Everyone else’s accompaniment fits perfectly into the track, from the backing vocals to the steady propulsive drum beat. So good; I wish everyone would write tracks like this. “About Your Life” seems a little bit more straightforward in the vein of classic pop songs. The guitars aren’t quite as clean here, and the synths provide an extra element to the background. I can’t quite put my finger on what makes this song so familiar, but I put it all down to Luis Gustavo’s voice. In contrast to the casual cool of the EP’s opener, here he sounds a bit softer, yet more distant in the mix. It might seem like I’m not enthused by the difference, but I assure you that I’m having a hard time not playing this track over and over. Screw it. I’m playing all four songs constantly. Pale Sunday gives a bit of a bouncing drum roll on “That’s the Way,” giving the third track a bit of swagger and swing. It’s a song about getting high with a friend or loved one, feeling lost in an emotional sense. Towards the end of the song it sort of careens with guitar work that sort of bursts into a solo…perhaps providing the listener with that feeling of taking off into the far out realms of one’s mind. When The Fake Stories About You and Me came to a close with “The Winter Song” I was taken aback at first. It’s a song focused on strummed guitar, and a different pop appeal than the previous tracks. For me, it seems a lot more thoughtful, as if the band intended to leave you with a departing note about how we should go on with our lives. I like the way there’s a musical emphasis from the rest of the group that seems to arrive just after the 2 minute mark. It’s a gorgeous track, and one that’s a fitting end to this EP. Just as it ends, you want more, which might be my only detractor here, but with songs this good, Pale Sunday isn’t going anywhere any time soon. I’m grateful for that.   --Austin Town Hall

I make quite an effort to keep my eyes and ears open for that great indie guitar pop sound. I'm accustomed to finding it in Scotland, England, Sweden, Finland, California, Seattle, New Zealand, Australia, and even Singapore (if you haven't listened to Obedient Wives Club, you are missing a treat). Thanks to Jimmy, we know about Pale Sunday -- A Brazilian power pop/twee pop four piece whose ‘The Fake Stories About You and Me’ EP continues Matinée Recordings' 2012 string of high quality releases. Happy (When You Lived Here) is a lovely, jangly melody that may remind you Belle & Sebastian both in sound and in melancholic sentiments. The robust guitars and plaintive vocals of the second and third tracks, About Your Life and That's the Way, earn fair comparisons to Teenage Fanclub's powerpop portfolio. The EP closes with the gentle Winter Song, on which piano and strings are added to the accompaniment. Pale Sunday has chosen its influences well, and executed its own interpretation of the genre in an excellent and affecting fashion. And their shimmering pop arrangements and warm harmonies make ‘The Fake Stories About You and Me’ EP a perfect record for your summer collection.   --When You Motor Away

A blog favourite Pale Sunday returns with a new EP entitled The Fake Stories About You and Me. They are a great Brazilian indie pop group and I really loved their early releases Weekend With Jane EP (2003) and Summertime? album (2005). Based on the opening track of the new EP Happy (When You Lived Here), the band is still more than capable of creating magnificent indie pop tunes. It’s already been a great year for our friends over at Matinée Recordings, having released the new Cats on Fire and several great EPs. And they’re at it again with a new EP from Brazil’s Pale Sunday. The title for the release is The Fake Stories About You and Me, and you can grab it from the label right now. Gentle pop music seems to be the group’s specialty, and you can see similarities to the great Teenage Fanclub, but personally I think that things on this listen are a lot softer–in an endearing way of course. Os paulistas do Pale Sunday estão de volta depois de um bom tempo. O último lançamento havia sido o EP “Shooting Star”, de 2010, pela Matinée Recordings, a mesma que banca agora o novo EP, “The Fake Stories About You And Me”. Luiz Gustavo (baixo e vocais), Sineval (guitarra), Tiago Fuzz (guitarra & sintetizador) e AZ (bateria e vocais) continuam com a ótima pegada teenagefanclubiana que encantou o mundo (literalmente) com o “Summertime?”, discaço de 2005. Ma che bello, sono ancora in giro i Pale Sunday! Band brasiliana che, a dispetto della provenienza, negli anni passati ci aveva regalato autunnali melodie debitrici di Byrds e Teenage Funclub. Dai tempi di Summertime? (oddio, del duemilacinque?!?!) li avevo persi un po' di vista ma The Fake Stories About You and Me, il loro nuovo ep su Matinée, li ritrova in forma come sempre. Pale Sunday, son un cuarteto Brasileño enamorados del pop de finales de los 80 y principios de la siguiente década, habiendo sido comparados con bandas como Teenage Fanclub, The Wannadies o Another Sunny Day.
