King Mareschal named herself King Mareschal. She wrote her old name in the middle of her favorite paper book with an old pen that bled. Then she leaned onto the railing and held the book out over the edge of the balcony, watching the ink flatten into the page. Every car and skiff that called out this early in the morning sounded a thousand miles away, and it was the only thing she could hear beyond her own deliberate breathing. The little fire in her stomach was trying to tell her she was going too far, constantly now. She wrestled with that as the breeze picked up a few pages over her thumb. Her wrist lilted and pointed the book down toward a thousand foot drop. A slip of paper escaped the book and danced away, down into the haze of the morning inversion.
