POS045 - BOODY - WE HAD THAT

On February 25th, Palms Out released the first in a series of compilations on cassette and digital. Titled plainly: "End Broken Windows", 100% of the proceeds of the series will go to charity in an effort to raise awareness about broken windows policing methods. Specifically, I hope this project contributes in some small way to spreading the word about the ways in which policing and prosecuting low-level offenses serves only as a way of terrorizing and traumatizing vulnerable populations, without achieving the intended goal of preventing violent crime. The theoretical premise of broken windows policing is fundamentally flawed, and woefully misguided -- there is no evidence that focusing police power on low level violations like sex work, loitering, minor vandalism, petit theft, minor drug offenses, etc. leads to any reduction in violent crime. The practice must end.

Each volume of the series will benefit a different charity doing work to counteract the effects of broken windows policing; all it really does is criminalize being black, trans, queer, young, unhoused, etc. The first volume will benefit the SBB National Sex Worker Bail Fund (swopbehindbars.org/donate). Sex workers are often intersectionally and inordinately affected by broken windows policing, and should never be forced to spend a single night in jail merely for exercising agency over their own bodies.

Musically and conceptually, this record is inspired by a place where broken windows policing is disproportionately felt: the subway/metro. I gave all of the artists the vague prompt to write music inspired by the NYC subway system -- and the results were expectedly varying. For this volume, I pursued artists who have been generally exploring midtempo dance music without focus on 4 to the floor drum patterns. The result was a collection of largely breakbeat-oriented songs, some with direct classic NYC & Detroit electro references, others with more melodic and euphoric UK hardcore inspiration, and others still that kind of split the difference between modern bass and Baltimore club (for lack of better descriptors).

The very first artist to release on Palms Out, back in 2007, Fagget Fairys are back- with an EP full of the attitude they are known for. Following last years Feed the Horse LP, the ladies are back once again to conquer dancefloors. Ena's vocal stylings have not lost any swank, and the beats come correct. The A-side, "Black Hole" invokes a familiar lead line that weaves around sultry lyrics. The b-side, "Turkish Delight" sees MC Ena returning to the balkan roots that we saw on the original Samo Ti EP - a rowdy eastern adventure. Remixes explore various angles all with a lean towards deep dark house, with Scandinavians leading the charge. Danish man of the moment, Mikkel Holtoug gives the original version of "Black Hole" an icy Scandinavian work out, staying true to the original while lifting it further into house territory. Russian Danish transplant Jean Doe impresses with an uber-modern version, for fans of UK house and german techno alike. Icelandic Brynjar takes things harder and deeper with an electro tinged growling bassline and staggered beats. On the flip side, German club aficionados Beware + Motorpitch come through with a solid bumpy house version of "Turkish Delight," using the varied parts to great effect. Finally, New York based Contakt, hot off a release on T.Williams' Local Action, channels the dancefloors of Berlin's Berghain for his deft interpretation.

I Saw How The Planets Gathered

After a stellar year for the Montreal/Los Angeles based LOL Boys, with successful releases on Palms Out and numerous other labels, as well as remixes for just about everyone under the sun- their debut mini-album entitled LDR (Long distance relationship) is ready for a mass audience. Straying from previously more light hearted and tongue-in-cheek songs, the LOL Boys come correct with a serious set of five songs focused on melancholy, spring sounds. Hot on the heels of their latest single, Black Hole, Danish duo Fagget Fairys are back with a rowdy eastern adventure, full of balkan swank, and shimmering strings. To start off the jam packed remix package, UK house mongers Kry Wolf deliver a cracking take, built on a slippery rhythm and full of glitter. Staten Island's bass monster, and Palms Out's own Udachi takes the track to the depths of grimy bass, and shocks with the most detailed workout of the vocals imaginable. Danish wunderkind, Frederick Olufsen, comes out strong with a growling electro meets detroit version, with a monster second drop. The one and only Norrit, from Lawrence, Kansas, is finally ready to put out his debut solo EP for Palms Out, named for its heartbreaking lead song, "Only Me and U". Norrit lets his imagination do the talking in four new compositions, airy and rumbling, one more beautiful than the next. Drawing influence from a proud mid-western dance music tradition of healthy appropriation, Norrit has weaved together a journey that starts in icy northern atmospherics, heads down to jack in Chicago, take acid in Detroit, detours to Columbia to shake to iron chain Cumbia, and finally ends up in the UK, two-steppin'. Only Me and U sews an original thread in a crowded dance music landscape- and as a bonus, Unknown to the Unknown (UTTU/Hot City) gives the title track a trudging analog dancefloor fix. Not to be missed.

Palms Out is pleased to present swedish quartet The Touch. They have previous releases on French powerhouse label, Kitsune, as well as Swedish house label Trunkfunk records, and have done official remixes for the likes of Robyn, Rex the Dog, Drop The Lime, Le1f, Pacific!, Trevor Loveys and more. The radio single, "All I Find" is a strikingly lovely duet between vocalists Lina &amp; Olov. Minimalist, full of scandinavian cool, and instantly memorable, the song involves a classic story of projection and looking for yourself in someone else, and never being satisfied. The remix by Canadian phenom, Lunice, maintains much of the melodic simplicity of the original while adding orchestral percussion and arpeggiating synths, lifting the song to hubristic heights. On the flip side,The Touch show their playful side, with wonky house bumper car ride "Bodies Waiting" where Olov croons about the intrinsic value of flesh in love, asking "why keep our bodies waiting?" - The remix of "Bodies Waiting" by Parisian wonder French Fries is an epic ride from freezing cold Stockholm to Atlanta's dirty south and out the other side of South London. 

In addition to digital release a limited edition 12" colored vinyl will be released.

The Touch - Bodies Waiting (French Fries Remix)

Palms Out is proud to announce the Belligerent EP by Copenhagen's own Anders Dixen aka. Dixone, with vocals by bluesman Claudius Pratt aka. Reverend Shine. Dix shuttles Pratt's classic blues phrasing and alcohol soaked voice into a landscape of skittering rhythms, grand melodies, and distopian bass. The EP is comprised four epic songs, each more interesting than the next, and a hauntingly beautiful interlude in two parts, titled "Ode to the Modern Man". Best known for his hard hitting remix of Bomba Estereo's  "La Boquilla" which was featured in the film Limitless, starring Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper, Dix takes a left turn and delivers a truly satisfying and beautiful record that is equally at suited for a huge sound system, ipod, or home listening.

Palms Out is very excited to announce the release of the Mysterious EP, by Copenhagen's favorite son, August Fenger, aka ELOQ. At a very tender age, he is already a local hero in Copenhagen for his raucous parties and DJ sets, as well as the already legendary production work for local rap phenom, KIDD. With one solo release under his belt for Copenhagen's Hobby Industries, he's taking his sound global. The 4 song Mysterious EP is a glittering explosion of energy– a comet trip to saturn with detours in Atlanta, Chicago, and London to pick up some strong musical references. The remixes of the radio single, "Why Don't You?" are equally out-of-this-world, starting with a dubby heater by men-of-the-moment Lazer Sword, an experimental bass quest by Melbourne's Lucid, and a giddy old school house take by Palms Out's own Norrit.
