POS045 - BOODY - WE HAD THAT

On February 25th, Palms Out released the first in a series of compilations on cassette and digital. Titled plainly: "End Broken Windows", 100% of the proceeds of the series will go to charity in an effort to raise awareness about broken windows policing methods. Specifically, I hope this project contributes in some small way to spreading the word about the ways in which policing and prosecuting low-level offenses serves only as a way of terrorizing and traumatizing vulnerable populations, without achieving the intended goal of preventing violent crime. The theoretical premise of broken windows policing is fundamentally flawed, and woefully misguided -- there is no evidence that focusing police power on low level violations like sex work, loitering, minor vandalism, petit theft, minor drug offenses, etc. leads to any reduction in violent crime. The practice must end.

Each volume of the series will benefit a different charity doing work to counteract the effects of broken windows policing; all it really does is criminalize being black, trans, queer, young, unhoused, etc. The first volume will benefit the SBB National Sex Worker Bail Fund (swopbehindbars.org/donate). Sex workers are often intersectionally and inordinately affected by broken windows policing, and should never be forced to spend a single night in jail merely for exercising agency over their own bodies.

Musically and conceptually, this record is inspired by a place where broken windows policing is disproportionately felt: the subway/metro. I gave all of the artists the vague prompt to write music inspired by the NYC subway system -- and the results were expectedly varying. For this volume, I pursued artists who have been generally exploring midtempo dance music without focus on 4 to the floor drum patterns. The result was a collection of largely breakbeat-oriented songs, some with direct classic NYC & Detroit electro references, others with more melodic and euphoric UK hardcore inspiration, and others still that kind of split the difference between modern bass and Baltimore club (for lack of better descriptors).

The very first artist to release on Palms Out, back in 2007, Fagget Fairys are back- with an EP full of the attitude they are known for. Following last years Feed the Horse LP, the ladies are back once again to conquer dancefloors. Ena's vocal stylings have not lost any swank, and the beats come correct. The A-side, "Black Hole" invokes a familiar lead line that weaves around sultry lyrics. The b-side, "Turkish Delight" sees MC Ena returning to the balkan roots that we saw on the original Samo Ti EP - a rowdy eastern adventure. Remixes explore various angles all with a lean towards deep dark house, with Scandinavians leading the charge. Danish man of the moment, Mikkel Holtoug gives the original version of "Black Hole" an icy Scandinavian work out, staying true to the original while lifting it further into house territory. Russian Danish transplant Jean Doe impresses with an uber-modern version, for fans of UK house and german techno alike. Icelandic Brynjar takes things harder and deeper with an electro tinged growling bassline and staggered beats. On the flip side, German club aficionados Beware + Motorpitch come through with a solid bumpy house version of "Turkish Delight," using the varied parts to great effect. Finally, New York based Contakt, hot off a release on T.Williams' Local Action, channels the dancefloors of Berlin's Berghain for his deft interpretation.

Palms Out is pleased to present swedish quartet The Touch. They have previous releases on French powerhouse label, Kitsune, as well as Swedish house label Trunkfunk records, and have done official remixes for the likes of Robyn, Rex the Dog, Drop The Lime, Le1f, Pacific!, Trevor Loveys and more. The radio single, "All I Find" is a strikingly lovely duet between vocalists Lina &amp; Olov. Minimalist, full of scandinavian cool, and instantly memorable, the song involves a classic story of projection and looking for yourself in someone else, and never being satisfied. The remix by Canadian phenom, Lunice, maintains much of the melodic simplicity of the original while adding orchestral percussion and arpeggiating synths, lifting the song to hubristic heights. On the flip side,The Touch show their playful side, with wonky house bumper car ride "Bodies Waiting" where Olov croons about the intrinsic value of flesh in love, asking "why keep our bodies waiting?" - The remix of "Bodies Waiting" by Parisian wonder French Fries is an epic ride from freezing cold Stockholm to Atlanta's dirty south and out the other side of South London. 

In addition to digital release a limited edition 12" colored vinyl will be released.
