2019 03 | Monthly Spread

With the end of March comes another Monthly Spread installment, independently curated by @DOPECHEDDAR and aimed to deliver recently discovered international electronic gems.

This month’s ‘Spread’ includes two newly released tracks from pizza slinging @Emissions_Recordings’ label boss @P_Leone, named one of ‘25 Artists You Need To Watch In 2019’ by @Mixmag and totally living up to the acclaim. P.Leone’s ‘Walked Into My Life’ combines high-energy and heavy-hitting techno elements with a modified vocal sample from Lee Fields’ ‘Could Have Been’, resulting in what feels like an instant classic track that will endure the test of time on the dancefloor. ‘What Could I Have Done’ is also included in this playlist and is defined by a movement-inducing kick groove decorated by delayed synth stabs and heady highs. @DJLilyPita is a Jakarta based DJ and producer who has received a lot of attention for the recently released ‘Sunshine EP’ on the @Lauter-Unfug imprint. ‘Sequ3nce,’ a deep and melodic progressive house track, is highlighted in this playlist and is driven by a memorable deep baseline and rising synth pattern. The track really progresses in a beautiful way that should to be appreciated from start to finish. Be sure to check out the ‘Sunshine EP’ in its entirety! @BModular is another talented artist highlighted in this month’s ‘Spread’. Francesco Cappellini (b.mod) is a modular-focused techno artist pursuing Sound Engineering in Glasgow who has recently released ‘Expatriate’, a four track + two remix EP on the @StickyGround imprint. ‘Sly Me’ is a track that highlights b.mod’s skill with modular hardware and includes a unique assortment of electronic sounds that are carefully crafted and arranged. First up, Romain FX returns to the cobbler’s kitchen with ‘Neon Train’, plating up some weapons-grade machine grooves, garnished with hypnotic vocals - guaranteed to whet your appetite. GREETINGS follows up this electrifying entree the introduction of the enigmatic ‘Flavio Zoom’, a cosmic search through robust and considered flavours. Newcomer Sam In Space makes a splash with mid-meal workout ‘Aerobic’, charismatic dark disco with an athletic flair. Things take a turn for the sampladelic with the strange and playful mutant funk of ‘Pre Club’ by Club Sausages, before an all-time classic gets an imaginative Italo rework with ‘The Rhythm’ by Black Feeling. Kayroy teams up with Imogen Cygler for a palette cleansing contemplative chugger ‘Eggna’, with dreamy arpeggios building to a dreamy crescendo, before Pleasure Voyage present final course ‘Return’, a fitting sunset synth-pop soundtrack that’s the bittersweet like the perfect negroni.

Italo Deviance - Purple Galaxy

The multi-faceted and multi-talented Alberto Melloni returns once more to Bordello A Parigi to unveil his musical multi-verse. “Lago Lungo”, the title piece, sets the tone for the quartet of tracks. Steady kicks thud next fizzing hi-hats as a rich and full-bodied piano melody takes hold, Melloni’s instrumentation creating sheer peaks and creamy amber plains. “Promised Land” offers a different audio topography. Key stabs are bolstered by incising beats as a late-night italo infused romp undulates from speaker cones. Underscoring the EP are influences from both disco and house, sun-kissed chords countered by textured percussion. These twin inspirations combine in the groove laden “Paradise Pie”. Clean notes are refracted in neon, undercurrents of acid lurking just below the vibrating hardwood floor. The mirrorball takes the limelight for the finale. Breathy, smokey vocals orbit funk dipped lines of “Only You”, warbling vocoders dancing under the glittering beams to the close.

Even though esteemed norwegian DJ Ole Martin Vilberg aka Omar V and Robin Craaford, one half of Dance Disorder with Baby G ( Bpitch, Eskimo ) are hardly young guns, they gang up together for the first time on "complete": a blinding cut that harks back to the time with good ol Jack was still the young buck and closely associated with uncle Electro Funk: tough beats, hyperactive claps, a jittering bass and a catchy, squeaking melody are still rattling bones if masterfully pieced together as it is done here.
