In Episode 96  of the Warrior Life Podcast, we talk to two leading Indigenous legal experts about Bill C-15 - the federal legislation intended to create a National Action Plan to ensure Canada's laws are compliant with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). 

Professor Brenda Gunn and the Honourable Murray Sinclair help us understand the human rights protections contained in UNDRIP and they address the many concerns and misconceptions related to Bill C-15. 

The Honourable Dr. Sinclair is Anishinabe whose list of accomplishments is very long as he has worked as a lawyer and professor; associate chief judge of the provincial court of Manitoba; co-commissioner on the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry of Manitoba; Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada; Senator; and now works at the law firm of Cochrane Saxberg.

Professor Brenda Gunn is Metis lawyer and professor at UofM law, who is a well-known expert on international law and done a significant amount of international human rights work including: research to promote greater conformity between international laws protecting Indigenous rights and domestic laws; community legal aid clinic in Guatemala on a case of genocide submitted to the IACHR; provides technical assistance to the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; AND she wrote a handbook about understanding and implementing UNDRIP.

Today's podcast is a special one that I created for the imagineNATIVE podcast project called FLOW. FLOW is a commission project that features six durational audio works by Indigenous artists that connect distant listeners to site-specific bodies of water. FLOW seeks to provide opportunities for Indigenous artists to explore ancestral ontologies concerning water through sonic storytelling.

I am so honoured that Eastern Eagle Singers allowed me to use their song Samqwan Na Mimijuaqn from their 2018 album It Gives Us Life. I am also thankful to my son Mitchell who did the drone videography for my video trailer and imagineNATIVE for the opportunity to be part of this.

Today's Warrior Life Podcast is a special extended interview with lawyer Kimberly Murray - a Mohawk from the Kahnesatake Mohawk Nation -  who currently serves as the Independent Special Interlocutor for Missing Children and Unmarked Graves and Burial Sites associated with Indian Residential Schools.

Kimberly comes to this position with a great deal of related experience having been the former Executive Director of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Prior to this she was the Executive Director of Aboriginal Legal Services of Toronto and appeared before the Ipperwash Inquiry in Ontario and Frank Paul Inquiry in BC.

Lenard Monkman: Community Builder

In Episode 79, we talked to Brandon Maloney, a Mi'kmaw warrior, fisher, leader and family man from Sipekne'katik formerly known as Indian Brook First Nation in Mi'kma'ki.

He joined us to share what has been happening on the ground in Mi'kma'ki where non-native commercial fisherman are engaged in racist acts of violence, threats, property damage and attempts to stop Mi'kmaw peoples from fishing. He also talks about his community's governance plan for the fishery and how it came from the people.
