Marco Shuttle's third album, Cobalt Desert Oasis, features a varied collection of music recorded across a two year period. Often traveling to remote destinations, Marco would come back to Berlin with field recordings, images, and other inspirations to process in his studio and turn into sound.

The theme of the journey turns into a something more abstract than a travel diary, where environmental sounds blend in with modular synthesis, drum machines, effects and analog oscillators resulting in a cinematic listening experience where psychedelia, ritualism, and mysticism weave together in a sort of alien soundscape - that as the title of the album suggests, is reminiscent of a parallel utopian world.

The album is rich in complex rhythmics, and more than in any of his previous work, has strong acoustic elements. Amongst other percussion instruments, Marco used the Tombak, a traditional Persian hand drum capable of reaching a very wide range of frequencies - from deep round subby toms, to high pitched sharp rimshots, throughout the record.

Marco Shuttle is certainly not new to these sort of elements, but in Cobalt Desert Oasis he brings the environmental element of his sound into the forefront in a way that takes the listener into a hazy expanse where it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the machine elements from the natural - and where the music almost becomes a visual experience, which relates to Marco's own photography used throughout the cover and insert images.

Finnish deep techno maestro Kaspiann (@soundsofkaspiann) makes his Mantis debut with four densely packed depth charges of dancefloor meditation. The Helsinki-based artist has been entrenched in the city’s underground scene for a long time, organising official and unofficial parties, DJing prolifically and performing live. Since establishing his VALA label in 2021 via a split release with regular collaborator Multicast Dynamics, his sound has refined towards an elegant, heads-down sound which is represented perfectly on this four-track excursion. From the even-tempered mantra of ‘Satakieli’ to the aqueous, lightly dubbed electro of ‘Tuiskussa Langennut’, the warm after hours synth bath of ‘Havinavalssi’ and the pensive percussive of ‘Solina’, Kaspiann demonstrates a keen balance between richly layered detail and an overall subtlety — heavyweight music that feels light on the ears.

French musician, producer, and live artist Contre Soirée aka Olivier Decodts makes a significant return to Veyl with 'Psychiatry', a four-track EP shaped by deeply personal experience and emotional intensity. Rooted in post-punk, the release blends electronics with guitar parts, everything performed by Olivier himself.

What may have initially sounded like a PR stunt quickly revealed itself as anything but: ’Psychiatry' was conceived, completed, and sent to the label during Olivier’s stay in a psychiatric hospital. The first three tracks form a raw and honest narrative, tracing the events and emotional journey leading up to his hospitalization and explore the boundaries between vulnerability and resilience.

Closing the release is a cover of the Pixies' 'Gauge Away', a long-time favorite of Olivier’s. His rendition pays tribute to the original while placing it firmly within the emotional and sonic context of the EP, a final note of reverence and catharsis.

'Psychiatry' is a fearless expression of personal truth, pushing beyond the dancefloor to uncover something more intimate and affecting.

Vitaliy Dubree’s new album Ratio et Caritas finds the Chernogolovka-based producer stepping outside his familiar dub techno framework into a more exploratory electronic space. Known for his releases on Leipzig’s Insectorama, Dubree shifts focus here toward intelligent electronica with clear traces of Berlin School sequencing and electro-inspired rhythm design. The record explores the balance between structure and emotion, through precise sound design, pulsing low-end movement, and melodic phrasing that gradually builds narrative tension.

While still grounded in the spacious atmospheres and delay drenched textures of dub, Ratio et Caritas feels more introspective and narrative driven than Dubree’s earlier output. Each track carries subtle references to Soviet era sci-fi films, weaving archival fragments into the mix to create a sense of cultural memory and modest futurism. The result is an album that bridges studio precision with emotional resonance, less a functional dance record, more a focused study in texture, pacing, and the intersection of human and cosmic scale.

As proprietors’ of the Will & Ink label, Yaleesa Hall & Malin Genie have been maintaining a busy and consistent release schedule of top notch techno sounds, largely releasing their own, well received, productions.  The duo appeared on Hypercolour’s “10 Years” compilation in 2016 with the excellent “Buchan Trap”, and we’ve been blessed to secure a full single release with the on-point pair.

The mechanical funk of “Artin” swings with plenty of assured groove; the shuffling hats, dense kicks and dubby stabs that ping pong across this fierce production mark this out as a real killer cut.

Dario & Marco Zenker, AKA the Zenker Brothers, take time out from their busy Ilian Tape operations to remix “Artin” into a brutal yet funky techno goliath.  Congas perpetually roll forward, with frenetic 909 hats and raw and ready stabs in what may well be one of the Zenker’s finest remixes to date. 

The essence of funk continues in Hall & Malin’s music, with “Cahen”, a great slab of compelling techno that never slips too far into darkness, instead keeping an ever evolving groove and some abstract drone like synthesis to keep the mood buoyant.

Wrapping up the release is “Brown”, a track that finishes as urgently as it starts, perhaps with a cap doffed to the Purpose Maker sounds of a certain Jeff Mills, but broadening the palette to allow some trippy sound architecture and an effective breakdown mid way through.

Modern day techno supplied by a duo that will most certainly flourish over the coming months, Yaleesa Hall & Malin deliver the goods aplomb on this Hypercolour single.

Conjuring the sentiment of death as productive force, the artists join their analog paradigms to open a door elsewhere, or perhaps, inside - sublimating personal struggles into ritualistic offerings. Churning, cinematic, and pulsating with an organic sentience - The Ghost of Georges Bataille invites an undeniable presence into the consciousness and lulls both collectors and the newly inducted alike into catharsis - with the hairs on their arms standing up. Not for the casual listener.

The Ghost Of Georges Bataille

The man behind Workshop and Out To Lunch famously takes his time to make electronic productions that are, in turn, out of time. Over the course of his career he's released tracks that could have been made yesterday, years ago, or a decade into the future. with Avenue 66 he's found a leftfield home that celebrates pure creativity, that embraces the liminal, the weird and the sublime. Light Surfing fits all of these descriptors.

The double-LP rewards deep, repeated listening. There's plenty to unpack, but those who cherish the murky bangers that have been Lowtec's stock and trade will find plenty to love. "Boy With The Broken Glasses" weaves a subtle, dancehall-inflected riddim into hazy ambient house, while the closer, "Burnt Toast," is the latest example of Kuhn's uncanny ability to perfectly fit a soulful vocal sample into an alien dance floor soundscape. 

Unexpected moments of sideways beauty also unfurl across the four sides. The two-part "Light Surfing" is one of Lowtec's most evocative suites to a date—its mournful string soundtrack is the album's recurring, longing motif. Elsewhere, as on "Mynthenquai," Kuhn applies avant-garde strategies to his synth leads, taking us on head-spinning melodic journeys. 

Light Surfing is a masterful balancing act between dream states and machine-like efficiency, the experimental and functional, precision and spontanaeity. Lowtec could have only gotten here by taking his time.
