‘SEX’ is the latest record from acclaimed contemporary artists Anne Imhof, Eliza Douglas and composer Billy Bultheel. It was composed during the development of Imhof’s art exhibition of the same name, previously exhibited at Tate Modern, London, The Art Institute of Chicago and Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea.

Music is core to Imhof’s work. It functions not only as a soundtrack to perform to, but rather that music itself, and the act of performing music, becomes a work of visual merit by its very nature. Imhof’s performance work, in collaboration with Douglas, is often described as visually being a futuristic, nihilist take on pop culture citing metal and grunge aesthetics while making connections to thematics of classical painting. The concert itself becomes a visual language in Imhof’s performative work which sits evenly placed with her painting and sculpture.

Imhof, Douglas and Bultheel adapted the songs from how they appeared in the exhibition ‘SEX’, with the result being a compelling record that can act as an imaginative accompaniment to the ‘SEX’ performances, as well as stand alone as a progressive collection of contemporary compositions.
‘SEX’ references punk, industrial and grunge, while boldly juxtaposing these forms with music of the classical and baroque period. ‘SEX’s compositions combine classical formals and orchestration with vocals that are rooted in subcultural traditions, thus beautifully overdrawing and overwriting these classical forms with the composer's own. Harpsichord and oboe are combined with distorted electric guitar, or exuberant string ensembles with heavy industrial drums.

The amalgamation of genres contained in the album was also integral to the choreography of the ‘SEX’ performance, where waltzes and tangos were contrasted with stage diving, slam dancing and moshpits. What resulted was a surreal ballroom, loaded with desire and aggression. In the same vein, the record fearlessly shapeshifts, blending genres and styles to evoke an impressive array of moods. The voices and instruments crush like operatic electric waves throughout wide rages, laughing, shouting, coming close and being far. Oscillating between fragility and flamboyance, Douglas and Imhof’s versatile voices reinvent themselves from one song to the next, while singing songs of love and hate.
The final song on ‘SEX’ ends with a lyric from the band LOW, “All you Pretty People, you’re all gonna die”. This ambiguous moment, a prophecy sung in Douglas’ vibrating baritone voice, rattles the listener despite the mundane truth of the statement. This complexity is reflected in the album itself, allowing for an unusual multiplicity of emotions and interpretations with impressive depth and dynamism.
The record’s release coincides with the final performance of ‘SEX’ at Castello di Rivoli in Turin in September 2021 and the opening of Imhof’s Carte Blanche exhibition ‘Nature Mortes’ currently on view at Palais de Tokyo, Paris through October 2021.

London’s abundant waterways and parks provide an oneiric muse for Cucina Povera and Ben Vince’s resounding debut full-length collaboration, an engrossing suite of weightless sax, synth and disklavier-bedded, noirish nocturnes that land somewhere between Grouper and Terry Riley. 

Centred around Maria Rossi aka Cucina Povera’s muzzy vocal loops and the faintest melodic motifs, London-based composer and multi-instrumentalist Ben Vince accompanies on saxophone, synth and piano, shrouding Rossi's vocals in swirls of dimly lit psychedelic smoke. As a newcomer to London, Rossi was "caught up in a sort of wondrous overwhelm” - a feeling that seeps through every movement of the almost hour long album. Working mostly at the Roundhouse, the pair find a musical confluence between Rossi's words - "fluid, dreamy, hazy ideations" - and Vince's shadowy renditions.

Vince's plasmic echoes and Rossi's aerial delivery form a poetic union, twisting and painting each sound in pearlescent shades. Rossi's folk roots shine through like cracks of dawn sunlight on 'Sumu Puistossa' ("fog in the park"), reverberating over organ and dream-zone sax; her words tip into muted surrealism thanks to the controlled chaos of Vince's bleak treatments. His grasp of jazz is transfixing: bending sax motifs like ghostly memories of music from another timeline, smudging them into the soundfield. It’s most effective on 'Siellä Näen Kaiken' ("there I see everything"), where sickly, dissonant notes flicker like an almost-extinguished candle alongside motorised furniture music courtesy of a Disklavier.

Born out of wonder, daydreaming innocence and creative discovery, 'There I See Everything ‘ is the sound of two exploratory collaborators swimming into each other's ideas. From the Terry Riley-esque transcendence of '∞' to the sacred incantation of long-form closer 'Pikku Muurahaiskeko' ("little anthill"), the pair expose a new layer of creativity with each turn, gradually zooming out from discreet, vulnerable beauty to encompass a gently orchestrated chaos of sustained, sublime tension.

Vanessa Amara returns with a new full length for Posh Isolation. Fonetica Amara is an adventurous and uncompromising addition to the body of work that is Vanessa Amara. New music from a truly singular voice in Scandinavian experimental music.

“‘Poses’ was in some weird way a return to form for us, being our first structured work since ‘You’re Welcome Here’. It was also the first music Sebastián and I worked on together after I had moved to Ireland. I don’t think we really knew how to go about having a long distance relationship, separated from the practice we had built in Copenhagen.
I only had my computer to work with and without access to the internet I was stuck with sampling from my digital collection of music. ‘Poses’ is almost solely made using the DAW; Logics pitch shifter plug-in and a quite limited source of samples. But it was inspiring to work with music like this. Having a clear compositional focus on orchestrating and organising rather than squeezing out notes from today’s mood. So without thinking much about it we’ve continued to work like this. We were working on ‘Fonetica Amara’ from October 2020 - December 2021.

I’m sitting here writing this because Posh Isolation don’t know what to think of ‘Fonetica Amara’ and have - on a friendly note - compared it to when Darkthrone released ‘Panzerfaust’.

I guess their point being a departure from trying to be genuine about making music, successfully perceived as being bulletproof serious. I want to believe there’s more nuance to seriousness and I wonder if Darkthrone wasn’t being humorous in their earlier material. The most recent Matrix film moved me to shed some secret tears. Surprisingly so. I’ve wondered why.
I recently made my first friend after moving to Ireland almost 4 years ago. I was volunteering during the West Cork Chamber Music Festival and Kevin Terry, who’s a brilliant composer based in Cork City, was down here with a couple of compositions. One night at the pub I was going on about the beauty of humour in music for a good while and Kevin summed it up perfectly by calling it self-awareness. It was that playful self-awareness that got to me while watching The Matrix: Resurrection.

Since ‘You’re Welcome Here’ we’ve been deviating from a path we might previously have started out on. More than anything we try to change, because we can’t let go of that feeling of not understanding, not knowing, not recognising.
We wish to stay curious about our voice, to not become specific, avoid exercising some kind of “disciplinary correctness” and to “want more questions than answers” (Jack Halberstam’s: The Queer Art of Failure).”

Minais B is the solo moniker of Villads Klint, who also produces deconstructed pop cuts as a part of the trio Khalil along with Nikolaj Vonsild (When Saints Go Machine, Cancer) and Simon Forman (Age Coin, Yen Towers), whose debut album was released August 25th on Posh Isolation. In his solo project, the young producer explores movement and contrasts in sound, and “As The River At Its Source” is no exception hereof. It stays in motion from the beginning to the end, constantly moving from one frame of mind to another, ultimately maintaining an atmospheric quality throughout the entire duration.

In “As The River At Its Source”, Minais B is uniting alluring and challenging sounds by merging sonic experiments with a profound, soothing melancholy, questioning when a sound is beautiful and when a stranger becomes an acquaintance. At times the piece lets its listener drown in dreamlike arpeggios and synth pads, while suddenly breaking down in order to proceed with a passage consisting entirely of restless bass-heavy beatings.

As his first vinyl release, Minais B delivers a very mature offering on “As The River At Its Source”, a highly emotional endeavor in contemporary ambient music, touching on the complex nature of human connection.
