Songs and Whispers - I. Oro

Triggered by the first few bars of Chopin's Scherzo in E Major, this short piece takes a different direction to that of Chopin. "nd movement of the suite Songs and Whispers, commissioned by Simon Trpceski for the opening of the International Piano Series at the South Bank Centre in London. That season was celebrating the 200-year anniversary of Chopin sp hence the quotes by Chopin in this 6-movement suite.

Songs and Whispers - II. Scherzo

Transcription of the Macedonian folk song 'Serbez Donka', this moevement ends with a cadenza by Simon Trpceski, who commissioned this suite for the opening of the International Piano Series of the South Bank Centre in 2009.

1 Mosaic - Part I

Macedonian composer Pande Shahov studied composition with Risto Avramovski, before enrolling at the Sts. Cyril and Methodius University Faculty of Music in Skopje, where he graduated in the class of Tomislav Zografski. He also studied Jazz harmony and arranging privately with Ilija Pejovski. As a British Council Chevening Scholar, Pande completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Composition at the Royal College of Music, studying with Julian Anderson. In 2013, he completed his doctorate at the Royal Holloway University of London, under Philip Cashian’s supervision. 

Pande’s music has been performed by the Macedonian Philharmonic, Sofia Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bolshoi Theatre Symphony Orchestra, the Choir and Orchestra of the Macedonian National Opera and Bаllet, New London Chamber Choir, Pro Ars Choir, California EAR Unit, Smith Quartet, as well as the De Ereprijs, Lontano, Ixion, Chroma, Reconsil, Kokoro, ConTempora, Freiburg Percussion Ensemble, Horizonte and Composers’ ensembles. Stage works include several theatre projects with the Macedonian director Goran Trenčovski, as well the ballet The Sound of the Water Says What I Think-a collaboration with the Estonian choreographer Teet Kask.

Recent premieres include his second Piano Concerto, commissioned by Simon Trpčeski and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, which had its first performance in August 2018 with Simon Trpčeski as soloist, accompanied by Cabrillo Festival Orchestra under direction of Cristian Macelaru. In April 2019, Chemin flottant for nine players received its premiere in Austria, performed by the Graz-based ensemble Zeitfluss, conducted by Edo Mičić.

Forthcoming premieres include Until We Meet Again, a cycle of Hampshire folk songs written especially for Portsmouth Grammar School choirs and London Mozart Players, and song cycle for the mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska and the accordionist Samuele Telari, for their recital at Verbier Festival in 2021. 

Pande lives in England and works as Assistant Director of Music at Portsmouth Grammar School and Academic Professor at the Royal College of Music in London. He is an active organiser of concerts and festivals, workshop-leader and conductor of new music.
