Clean Bandit's "Rather Be" has to be one of my favourite pop songs from recent years, mainly thanks to its complicated layering of melodies and counter-melodies and unarguably infectious rhythm. Nico & Vinz's "Am I Wrong" is comparatively a little more pedestrian, but it's still one of those few pop songs that I did enjoy after a few listenings, despite its repetitiveness.

"I'd Rather Be Wrong" is a medley of both songs, and thus far it's been one of the most challenging arrangements for piano duet that I've done. There were a large variety of melodic ideas from both songs to choose from, but what made writing this difficult was "Rather Be's" fast pace and extended melodies, making pitch dictation a considerable challenge.

As with my previous medley "Chocolate Girl", I also had a little difficulty with balancing the various parts in this track. The result is something I'm relatively happy with considering the few hours I took to complete the track from start to finish.

I personally think Pixar movies are more than just simple animated films. The animation studio has had hits and misses, but there's just something about a Pixar movie that provides appeal to audiences regardless of age. The songs I've decided to include in this arrangement, namely "You've Got A Friend In Me" by Randy Newman and "Beyond the Sea", a cover of "La Mer" by George Benson done by Robbie Williams, are both from Pixar movies that I regard as amongst the studio's best. "Toy Story" and "Finding Nemo" were made eight years apart, but both movies encompass themes that are still relevant today, with the added bonus of anthropomorphic toys and talking fish.

I don't usually add swing to my arrangements (I've only lightly dabbled in it for "Chocolate Girl") but in an arrangement involving two jazz-orientated songs, swing is not only important, but crucial. It's clear that I think "Beyond the Sea" gives me the greatest degree of freedom, since I decided to improvise a right-hand jazz line from scratch towards the end of the piece based on it's counter-melody. That's not to say that I didn't love writing "You've Got A Friend In Me", especially since the song also provided me with a valuable bridge section for fresh thematic material.

I thoroughly enjoyed writing this arrangement. I also realise that I've always been too intimidated by jazz to give it a try...so I'd consider this a good step forward.

When I finished this one, I played it back and said to myself, "Okay...this is a little much." So I've found a limit. Five songs. All excellent songs. If I think really hard I can probably squeeze out a nice story about their sequence, but I've exhausted all my energy on trying to handle four violently difficult piano staves in a five minute arrangement, so I'm pretty much tuckered out. 

That's my excuse for the hilariously nonsensical title, by the way.

It starts off simple. "Shape of You", a relatively simple song by Sheeran's standards. Next, "Galway Girl"'s fiddle rift (love it) flows in, and I'm surprised by how it naturally blends with "Shape of You". A shift in tone entirely, and we go into my favourite Sheeran tune, the gooey and romantic "Thinking Out Loud". Jazz chords...a first for me, in all honesty. I use the opportunity to squeeze "Photograph" in. This one's tough, considering how slow the song goes. And when "Don't" pops in, it's honestly abrupt, a violent turn in the mood. There's the persistent clash of themes into a ball of countermelodies, and we're back to the start. "Thinking Out Loud" pokes its head in at the end for a quick cameo.

This is probably the most difficult medley I've done to date. It'd better not get harder than this...just staring at the score is making my fingers cramp up.

Country pop is a guilty pleasure of mine, and Hunter Hayes has some fantastically catchy songs, 2 of which are in the key of Eb major and are equally fast-paced with awesome motifs to play around with. This medley is made from themes in "I Want Crazy" and "Tattoo", drenched in dominant 7th chords and strung up in finger-cramp inducing triplets.

Lots of fun to listen to, and lots of fun to write.

"If I Ain't Got You" is still one of Alicia Keys' best songs and one of the most beautiful R&B/Soul songs written in the early 2000s. I went a different direction here and kept the soul of the original song, put some light swing onto the main melody, and went ham on everything else. The second verse is partially replaced with new melodies, and the chorus is done with some playfulness that, although not entirely befitting the song, I couldn't resist including.

Another unlikely mashup, this one combining 2 major hits of the recent year (something that I don't usually do). I attempted to either grace Finesse with sultry latin flair or give Havana a coat of 80s grooviness, but ended up allowing the two catchy tunes to stand on their own (with my usual classical input).

In commemoration of the culmination of an experiment lasting 11 years and 22 films, this is a simple piano duet cover of the iconic theme music that rang through theatres around the world when the original six Avengers faced off against the Chitauri in "The Avengers" (2012).

3 months of slaving over a dissertation and the lingering effects of the events of Avengers Endgame led to this. A 16 track piano duet mashup of themes...scattered like infinity stones across the multitude of movies that make up the MCU experiment. Graced with a smattering of colour from my own classical palette. 

Almost 18 full minutes of intensity. This might have been a bit much.
