This was perhaps an over-ambitious project to screw with one very iconic pop-folk song of the 60’s, one that is emblazoned in my elementary school head and heart. As with most cover song attempts, I wanted to interpret the song differently from the amazing original recording (of which there were actually several) so I tried to pick up the pace a bit and I modified the chord structure here and there. I was struggling to feel content with it until Nat Daniels came in to contribute mightily to the overall production. I’m now glad for the endeavor though I expect many may disagree...

It was first recorded by Elton Britt in 1946
Roy Acuff recorded a version of the song in 1947, which helped popularize it further

Willie Nelson’s Iconic Version:
However, it was Willie Nelson’s recording that truly made the song a classic
Nelson included it as part of his 1975 album “Red Headed Stranger” 
The album itself was a concept album about a fugitive preacher on the run from the law after killing his wife
Nelson’s version of “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” was praised for its clean, uncluttered country music style and a sparse arrangement reminiscent of the 1940s
Rolling Stone described it as the “beating heart” of the entire album

Before this song, Willie Nelson had primarily found success as a songwriter (with hits like “Crazy” for Patsy Cline)
As a performer, he had only reached the top 10 of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart twice before

Composition--The Eclectic Collective 
  This song began with me coming up with the bass line and accompanying guitar chords that make up that part of the rhythm section. Ken was next to add his funky drums, thus completing the rhythm section. JJ also added to the rhythm, however, with his driving clavichord, soon after. He also added the trippy theremin you hear in the break part, too. Chris added some far out guitar parts that fill in the sound throughout, too. Mark then jumped in and she some of the synth you hear in the break part, too. Stephen came along to complete the sound with his cunning banjo, as well as fiery guitar in the break part. He also produced and mixed this superbly as always for us. 
  This is another purely Eclectic Collective production, and almost of us were able to add our voices to this, except Tez and The Mysterious Decibel. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it.
