Ten years on from the release of his highly acclaimed, award-winning debut LP ‘Emulation’, Mefjus shares five of the album’s biggest tracks with his label-mates at Critical for the 2024 remix treatment.

A landmark album in the genealogy of drum & bass music, the hard, heavy and supremely technical tracks gathered together for the original ’Emulation’ set a new standard in sound design and pushed the conventions of the genre to the very limit.

Mefjus himself reworks original title track ‘Emulation’, flaunting his untouchable studio skills by balancing frantic rolling drums and expertly engineered sub bass with a his trademark otherworldly sound design to unleash an almost impossibly energetic track.

Enei and Calyx take a tune each; with Enei reworking ‘Suicide Bassline’ into ultra-hard, minimal jump-up monster, while Calyx injects his signature molten, twisted bass into ‘Surrounded’ to make it all his own.

Two of Critical’s most recent recruits complete the package, with VISLA transforming ‘Saturate’ from a moody roller into a gritty stomper and Bristol-based SMG bringing ‘Change Of Mind’ featuring MC Maksim bang up to date in style.

Mefjus - Emulation (Mefjus Remix)

This has been one of the most intense weeks of my lifetime, watching what’s happening to our country, but also the upwelling of protest to the unraveling of our democracy, our institutions, and people’s lives. My heart is breaking, and it’s also full. Such confusing times we live in. 

Music is what’s keeping me afloat emotionally right now— and good friends. Apparently I had some pent up feelings that needed expressing, and it all found its way out into a DJ mix that I sort of hallucinated-out Monday evening. I’m newly back to DJing after a 20 year break, and my heart is on fire for this. It’s the best art-therapy I’ve ever done. I’ve been playing quite a few genres, but in this moment Deep Dubstep / 140 is what’s doing it for me.

So here’s what I was feeling this past Monday, in music form.

I’ve always felt that the original “Dustup” by Noisia and The Upbeats had a strong wild west, Mexican standoff, gunslinger kind of vibe. This remix is my homage to that feeling, adding even more musicality inspired by Ennio Morricone’s classic scores. I’ve tried to bring a fresh 2025 retouch to enhance that timeless vibe, making it a special tribute to a track that resonates deeply with drum and bass fans of my generation.
