A Brief History of Saint Lucia Carnival

Saint Lucia Carnival has its roots in French Catholic traditions, originally tied to the pre-Lenten festival** brought by early European settlers during the colonial era. These early celebrations were heavily influenced by French customs, including masquerade balls and street parades, which were mainly enjoyed by the colonial elite. Enslaved Africans, barred from participating, created their own parallel festivities that incorporated African drumming, dance, and costumes, which later played a foundational role in shaping the distinctly Caribbean character of Carnival as Saint Lucia gained independence and forged its own cultural identity.

Over time, the festival evolved into a vibrant national celebration of Saint Lucian culture, especially after the abolition of slavery and eventual independence in 1979. As in many other Caribbean nations, Carnival became a space for political expression, cultural pride, and creative freedom. The inclusion of traditional calypso, soca music, steel pan**, and elaborate costume bands** helped to develop a unique Lucian flavor that distinguished it from other regional Carnivals. In the 1980s, Saint Lucia's Carnival calendar was shifted from its traditional pre-Lenten slot to mid-July, separating it from Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival and allowing the island to capitalize on its own tourism and cultural showcase.

Today, Saint Lucia Carnival is one of the island’s premier cultural events, attracting locals and visitors alike with a weeklong schedule of activities such as Calypso Monarch, Panorama, Soca Monarch, J’ouvert, and the Grand Parade of Bands. It not only serves as a celebration of music, dance, and creativity, but also as a platform for youth engagement, economic activity, and the promotion of Saint Lucian arts and culture on the global stage. Its continued growth reflects the dynamic fusion of tradition and modernity that defines the spirit of the nation.

Dr. Slinger Francisco

The Mighty Sparrow, born Slinger Francisco on July 9, 1935, in Gran Roi, Grenada, is a legendary calypsonian known as the "Calypso King of the World." He moved to Trinidad at a young age, where he rose to fame in the 1950s with his witty, socially conscious, and often humorous calypso songs.

Sparrow won his first Calypso Monarch title in 1956 with the hit “Jean and Dinah” marking the start of a prolific career that would span decades. He became known for his sharp political commentary, powerful vocals, and charismatic stage presence. Some of his most famous songs include “Only a Fool,” “Saltfish,” “Congo Man,” and “Melda,” some of which were added to this mix.  

Throughout his career, Sparrow won numerous titles and awards, including multiple Calypso Monarch and Road March victories in Trinidad and Tobago. His music influenced generations of Caribbean artists and helped spread calypso around the world.

Sparrow’s contribution to Caribbean culture is monumental, and he remains an iconic figure in the history of Caribbean music.

Square one is one of my favorite bands. The group made a stamp of it's brand of soca over the years with so many hits out of Barbados. Would love to keep seeing reunion tours happening to keep bands like Square One & Krosfyah entertaining soca fans worldwide. Nothing like live music! Below is a biographical summary of the group.

History
The band was formed in 1986 by Anderson "Youngblood" Armstrong (vocals), Cecil "O Shaka" Riley (vocals), Paul Slater (bass guitar), George Jones (keyboards), and Winston Beckles (drums). Armstrong had begun performing in local calypso competitions in 1983, and was the youngest finalist in the Pic-O-De-Crop Calypso Monarch competition. Alison Hinds joined as co-vocalist in 1987, and the band took the name Square One that year. Their début album, Eat Drink and Be Merry, was released in 1988, and they were named 'Hotel Band of the Year' by the Musicians & Entertainers Guild of Barbados the same year, winning it again in the following two years. In 1990 they were joined by keyboardist Terry Arthur, and toured Europe for the first time. They built an international fanbase, with Hinds singing in French, Portuguese and Caribbean Patois. They were signed to Eddy Grant's Ice Records, releasing Special in 1992. Square one became the first representatives from Barbados as the Caribbean Music Awards at the Harlem Apollo in 1993. After a further album, Square Roots, they parted ways with Ice Records in 1995. Their next album 4 Sides spawned the hit single "Raggamuffin", which topped the charts in Guatemala for 49 weeks, and further hits followed with the Sweetness album and "Aye Aye Aye", "Turn it Around", "Ju Ju", and Sugar (Sweet)". They also won the Road March competition at the Barbados Crop Over in 1997 with "In the Meantime". Their 1998 single "DJ Ride" toped St. Lucia's Radio Caribbean chart for four weeks, only knocked off the top spot by the band's next single, "Faluma".[1] They also had a number-one hit in Barbados with "Bandit Dance", and had several hits in Trinidad and Tobago. In 1999 they won a Sunshine Award for 'Best Group Recording' ("Kitty Kat"). The band performed at the Negril Getaway festival in 2002.

Hinds left the band in 2004 after her daughter was born, having first taking a break in 2003 with Keanne Walters taking her place, but has since enjoyed a successful solo career.

Square One split up in 2005 but reformed in 2010, headlining the 'Soca On De Hill' festival in 2010. Anderson won the Party Monarch title in 2010 with his song "Foot On Fire".
