For the first output of an ongoing exchange between East Africa and East Asia via collectives Nyege Nyege/Hakuna Kulala (Kampala - Uganda) and SVBKVLT (Shanghai – China), we are excited to present ‘Slip A’ and ‘Slip B’, two Eps made during Slikback’s China tour/residency in April 2019.

After making first contact online in late 2018 and subsequently meeting up at CTM festival, Berlin, in January 2019, Nyege Nyege and SVBKVLT founded the beginning of a long term project exploring collaborations between East-Africa and East-Asia based artists.

For the first stage of the project, SVBKVLT invited Kenyan producer Slikback to China for a 3-week tour and residency in April 2019. During these 3 weeks, Slikback performed in 5 cities (Shenzhen, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing and Beijing), spending time in the studio with artists throughout the tour. The results of these studio sessions are now being presented in the form of two Eps, to be released simultaneously across the two labels Hakuna Kulala and SVBKVLT on September 6th, coinciding with Nyege Nyege Festival 2019, Jinja – Uganda, at which Slikback and 2 of the collaborators, Hyph11e and 33EMYBW, will perform.

‘Slip A’

The first EP, entitled ‘Slip A’ consists of 3 collaborations with SVBKVLT artists 33EMYBW, Osheyack and Yen Tech. Started in China and then finished remotely between Nairobi and Shanghai, the 3 tracks each find their place right in the middle of the artists styles, each track complimenting but twisting each others sound into something new. ‘Slip A’ will be released via Hakuna Kulala on September 6th 2019.

For the next release on SVBKVLT we are proud to present ‘Arthropods’, the new album by 33EMYBW. 7 new tracks plus remixes from Hakuna Kulala’s Don Zilla, Hyperdub’s Ikonika and NAAFI’s Lechuga Zafiro.

Arthropods will be released on Friday 11th October. 33EMYBW will be premiering her new live show for the album at Unsound Krakow on the same date.

About Arthropods

The soul is a fragment of a dream, the seed of future and past, evolving infinitely on the Arthropods* Continent. We seek out dreams and catch them, to scrape together the new Adam.

*1 ARTHROPODS： Arthropods is the alienation form of GOLEM*, and there is a soul in each metamere. They can upload, download, and link to each other.

*2 GOLEM：A golem is mythical humanlike figure made from clay and magically able to move on its own. In the Bible, Golem is an unfinished human being, without a soul. Through the process of its own evolution and its makers' experiments, a Golem can contain or generate its own soul. It can appear in different interconnected forms and reproduce itself at will. A golem with a soul, in order to speed up its own evolution, will sometimes supersede or devour the original form of life. The album Golem is inspired from this source.

33EMYBW - Arthropods Continent feat. Li Jianhong

Nazar(@nazareth-1) is an Angolan producer / DJ  known for his engaging, politically charged 'rough kuduro'. Kuduro as a music genre is often used in a way that distracts from the dark and violent history of the country, with upbeat melodies and lyrics. Nazar inverts this formula with sounds and themes reflecting on the violent period of the 27-year Angolan civil war. His 'NIHIL' series and 'Enclave' EP on @hyperdub reflect on the reigning Angolan kleptocracy.
