House Of Black Lanterns is the latest musical project from Dylan Richards, the man behind the King Cannibal and Zilla monikers (on the Ninja Tine and Warp Records labels respectively).  With an album and two singles out in 2013 on the highly respected Houndstooth label, Richards returns with a deadly EP for Hypercolour, backed with a very fine Mosca remix.  

In its Original Mix, ‘The Smack’ is a dense and atmospheric production, the slow pace and chugging bassline evoking shades of early Chicago house but with a thoroughly modern UK twist.  Filled with tension and drama, ‘The Smack’ is a big sounding record that cuts through so many genre sounds from dub techno to dubstep but sounds entirely individual and unique.  

Mosca steps up to the remix, following on from the launch of his new label Not So Much, and remixes for Alland Byallo and Sweatshop Boys.  Taking ‘The Smack’ up to an altogether skanking tempo, Mosca plummets the Basic Channel school of sound for the aptly titled ‘Dread At The Controls’ version.  Spring reverb all over the joint as Mosca works the droning synths and fire & brimstone vibes over a watertight, dub heavy workout.

‘Grey Leather Glass’ takes things up a notch, continuing the HOBL theme of dark & shadowy techno sounds with heaps of drama and sinister twists and turns, like some cinematic score to a Wes Craven slasher epic, and ‘8 Million Stories’ cuts up vocal chops, finger snaps and piano stabs over a brooding house production. Messrs David van der Leeuw and Luigi Vittorio Jansen have been making waves with their Beesmunt Soundsystem project, a lauded club night and DJ outfit that’s grown into a behemoth, breaking out of the Amsterdam dance music scene in which they made their name. Now the duo are returning to Pets Recordings with their new Raindance EP.

Beesmunt are used to controlling crowds and opening up the heavens with their eclectic, upfront and often frenetic style of house music. After releases on Soweso, Just Jack and of course last years huge Pets debut ‘Bodyshape', Catz N’Dogz have invited this emerging tour de force back, to bring their upfront, pristine production skills for another slice of block rocking music.

Opening cut 'Searchin’ kicks things off. The deep and bubbling number is characterised by the duo’s deep and bass heavy kick drums, with sweeping atmospherics, eerie vocal stabs and dusty, slo-mo drum claps. A mid tempo late night workout that touches all the right parts in equal measure as it blends house deepness with minimal pace.

Title track 'Raindance' starts with thick and fattened kick drums, while ticking clicks, 808 modulation percussion and one hit bass getting gnarlier and more stripped back on every 4th beat, evoking the sweaty vibes that characterised their raucous parties back at home.

Keeping true to its namesake on the flip, ‘Ominous' takes a different approach, coming with a stripped back, sound design approach, building up ominously into unpredictable beats before their trademark kick drum - rough around the edges and dripping in analogue clarity - pitches the track up a notch and un-relents until the very end. Finally, Borrowed Identity enters with remix of Searchin’, focusing on the atmospheric sweeps and vocal chops before dropping for a more 4x4 influenced workout, touched by hollow baselines and EQ’s chords.

Beesmunt Soundsystem are on fire with their unapologetic, raw style and sound. Two producers well ahead of their years.

After a considerable career releasing on numerous labels, as well as being co- founder of Essen based label Mild Pitch, Langenberg (@langenberg) finally drops his first album under this alias. Max Heesen, (who is also one half of Ribn with Manuel Tur) delivers the smartly titled 'Central Heated House' for Steve Bug’s Dessous Recordings. 

The LP format suits Langenberg’s hypnotic house classicism well, allowing time and space to stretch out the grooves and moods over four sides of vinyl - working both for the DJs and perfect as a soundtrack for the autumn.

The LP kicks off with 'Jade', a melancholic, tape saturated introduction to Langenberg’s deep tastes. 'Room 210' maintains this atmosphere, with fizzing percussion and warm Detroit-esque melodies.
'Groove 26' is perfectly timed for the hot summer, as lush Rhodes chords and KDJ style vocal snippets provide the heat for the openair vibes.

The single from earlier this year 'Shadows' features the talents of vocalist Blakkat, and caused some serious response when it hit airwaves and dancefloors alike.
'Never Worry' is a heads down roller, built around a simple but perfectly executed bassline, while 'Dreamliner' is trippy laidback sunshine house all the way. 'I’ll Be Late' and 'Planitz Proposal' step back into the club, with Langenberg’s signature crisp percussion, crunchy hits and analog synth wizardry on full display. 'Rain & Roses' closes out the album in a similar way to how it started ¬ wistful, thoughtful house music with soul.

The closure of fabric has seen a reaction that has been completely humbling and overwhelming to all of us on the team here, from over 150,000 signing a petition of support to raising in excess of £300,000 in donations to help our legal fight. 

Support has come from every corner of the industry, with fundraising events at a number of different venues being held up and down the UK. This response perfectly encapsulates everything the electronic music community represents.

Both fabric Records and our artist led label Houndstooth decided a release that embodies this spirit would be a further powerful way to demonstrate the collective power of our community. We asked artists associated with both labels to donate a track to the cause, needing to act fast we gave a deadline of just 3 weeks in total, from inception to final master. The brief was simple, we asked for a previously unreleased track, either brand new or an alternative version of an old classic.

The response has been far greater than we could have ever anticipated, with an array of amazing artists delivering stunning tracks. Given this generosity every track that has been submitted is featured on the release, meaning an incredible 111 tracks make up the final running order, presented in alphabetical order.

Due to touring and time constraints many more artists could and would have like to have been involved, and we can’t give enough thanks to all the labels that have generously allowed their artists to contribute.

In the era of the playlist, this compilation represents a comprehensive overview of electronic music from the outer fringes of experimental explorations right through to music aimed squarely at the dancefloor.

Ahead of the court date which will determine the long term future of fabric nightclub we’d like to present this compilation as a document of this moment in time but also as the perfect embodiment of everything fabric is and stands for.

Aaaron is a producer that’s been on our radar for a long time. As demonstrated by his beautiful and stripped back recent work for Connected Frontline, Aaaron’s tracks have developed a certain maturity that has become impossible to ignore.

Following that signature style, the grooves on Black Arp, his debut EP for Yoshitsohi, flow smartly from his experiences in Berlin’s minimal techno/tech house scene. Never too abrupt or intense, ‘Black Arp’ and ‘Keep Doin’ It’ are versatile tracks for many different atmospheres and set styles. Like much of his music, the percussion throughout features elements of tribal house, producing a playful energy and an extra level of accessibility.

Additionally, we’re very excited to welcome DJ T., another respected Berliner who really needs no introduction, to the label for the first time. He gives the EP a rough edge with this remix of Black Arp. The distorted synth leads and stabs here filter in and out over a driving tech house groove, giving the release a peak-time option for those in need.

For the remix I was lucky enough to borrow my mates 909, I just played around till I found a groove that worked over Tiga's original production. Tiga is back to tell you what you’ve always needed to hear with his new single “Eye Luv U.” Co-produced by one half of Paranoid London, the new single harnesses all the pure source energy of what enlightened club-goers often describe as their favourite emotion. 

“The title came to me while I was playing a pyramid that had been converted into a multi-purpose event space,” says the Canadian DJ/Producer. "The hieroglyphics over what is now the coat check made me imagine a world in which pictures could mean words and words could mean anything. The thing about wordplay is that it’s fascinating to conceive of different realities informed by different systems of meaning, and how each reality would invariably bend to vault me to the pinnacle of all possible worlds. It’s humbling, really.”

Rising Scottish talent Jasper James darkens the tone considerably on his remix, which would not be out of place at a classic off-the-grid warehouse rave. But not so fast, because Butch’s equally great “80s Warehouse Acid Remix” also lays claim to that warehouse, challenging what it means to be “warehouse” in an age when corporations pay people to throw parties in what used to be underground settings. 

“Warehouse is a state of mind,” adds Tiga helpfully. “It’s that indescribable feeling that transports you back to the first time you read an oral history about dance culture. I read one sponsored by Mountain Dew about three years ago, and I’ve never looked back.”
