There was a time, in an old country, many years ago, when an old artisan created a beautiful paper dragon. It was carefully made and almost lifelike when hung in the window and the wind would blow. This paper dragon was painted with the colors rainbow, with a wide tail like that of a peacock.

The house where the paper dragon hung was on a busy road, and many people would stop and admire the beauty and detail of the dragon. Sometimes people would come by and rearrange the head to point in a different direction or move the tail to the opposite side. Whenever anyone held the paper dragon, there was something about it that made people feel free and full of life.

One day, a stranger walked past the paper dragon and was struck by its splendor. Without a sound, he removed the paper dragon from the spot it hung, carefully tied a string round the dragon’s body and ran to the open field nearby. He held on to the other end of the string, let go of the paper dragon, and the wind picked the paper dragon up immediately, soaring high above the trees like a kite. Higher and higher, the dragon soared and pulled at the string.

The people who lived in the house with the dragon noticed that it was missing, and ran outside the house to see their paper dragon flying higher and higher, and began to think that, maybe, there was something in this paper dragon they had not seen before.

The wind blew more and more fierce. Suddenly, the string broke, sending the paper dragon ever higher and higher into the clouds. The people watching the paper dragon squinted as they saw the paper dragon float into the atmosphere, further and further away. Suddenly, the paper dragon began to grow, its paper wings stretched out, its colorful body began to move on its own. The people below stared in amazement, as the dragon came to life and flew away. 

All the stranger said was “Some things are meant to be free”.
