Take equal measures of Röyksopp's 'Melody AM', Todd Terje's 'It's Album Time', Lindstrøm's 'I Feel Space' with Studio Barnhus plus Magdalena Bay, and you're getting somewhere towards the sound of 'Om Verda Mi', the debut album from Lakeshouse. A long-player that distils the country's rich musical heritage and re-imagines it for the future. 

The band are part of the next generation of Norwegian producers, having had their first release on Paper in 2019. The Firkanta EP laid out a template of crisp production and cheeky humour with a broad range of influences that takes in everything from Scandi-folk, classical, Italo, techno, Aphex Twin, pop and anything else suitably leftfield. They bring with them a strong visual identity in the artwork and videos, channelling a psychedelic utopian Norway. 

The two singles from the album have made their way into the record boxes of Greg Wilson, Marcia Carr, Jimpster, Colleen Murphy, Kraak & Smaak, with Soul Clap calling Renates Dance 'Euro kitsch with epic forward thinking drum programming', which sums things up nicely!

MAde has been bunkered down in the north of Norway cooking up an EP  that harks back to the ‘classic’ 90s Paper sound with help from some his Scandinavian friends.

Tylen Fra Sande is peak time house for discerning dance floors, Filtered sample, rolling disco bass, snatched vocals and drums that swing like a illegal New York after hours. The pedal hits the floor and stays there.

Hailing from Sweden, Storken does what he does best with a remix that is groove heavy and soulful with a touch of disco wonk. It will give the beards something to Shazam, but more importantly the dancers the perfect soundtrack to throw down to.

Spillopper I By`n shows another side to MAde’s production with a downtempo cut that wouldn’t sound out of place on Kruder & Dorfmeister’s K & D Sessions. It’s super deep with a bass that flanges like Trevor Horn is manning the controls, live drums, delayed guitars and the sound of a band jamming in the pocket at 4am of the best speakeasy you’ve ever been to.

Finally fellow Norwegian countryman Kappekoff takes things into cosmic territory. Soaring synths, arps, delayed vocals with enough disco stardust to power the space station shuttle.

As Frankie sang, 'and now, the end is near', which is certainly the case for our long standing Trash The Wax compilation series.

Over the years, it has released some absolute dance floor smashers by established names in the art of bangers as well as emerging music makers showcasing their fresh sounds.

Initially, we wanted to establish Trash The Wax outside of the 'kick-hat-snare stuck over a Sister Sledge sample' style edits that were dropping weekly. The result was a collection of cuts aimed at the dance floor which would also appeal to fans of electronic music. But all things come to an end, and with this 10th release, we are finishing on a high.

As expected there are disco ticklers aplenty from renowned party people such as Late Nite Tuff Guy, Ed Wizard, Bill Brewster, Pablo & Shoey, Danny Russell & Ronald Christoph and Yam Who.

Tracks such as Leon Sweet's Sunny Bigler made their way into the record boxes of the likes of Luke Unabomber, Maurice Fulton and Chris Duckenfield as well as the airwaves of 6Music. Deckard's rework of the theme from 'The Warriors' created scenes at ALFOS in Glasgow with Sean Johnston saying 'I've never seen as many shirtless middle age blokes go as mental as they did when that dropped!'

On a more twisted gutter style disco tip, there is Richard Seaborne's ' Is This Acid?' which topped the Paper best ever sellers on Beatport for months, Richard Norris's 'Glow' is textbook space disco, the low slung sludge of James Rod & Aleito's 'Raum 909' and the Speak & Spell narrated Acidisco by Andy Buchan.

There are also two brand new cuts from TTW family members Boblebad & D.S.D. plus more killer music than we can shake a disco stick at. Never has the phrase 'all hitters and no shitters' been more apt.

Crazy P(enis) will be forever associated with the glory days of Paper Recordings. As the acid house fever dream started to fade, a new generation of ravers took the ball and ran with it for a more groove-driven sound. The band and label were part of the pack.

Paper Recordings first met Jim, Chris and Tim when they were fresh off the boat from North Wales and Nottingham, with a sampler tucked under their arms and a bag full of amazing demos. The first release soon led to their album, 'A Nice Hot Bath With...', which wrote the blueprint for what would become known as nu-disco. Sample heavy and great musicianship fed by late nights on the dance floors of Manchester made it an instant classic.

The band grew with the addition of Danielle Moore's lead vocals and star power. On their next album, The Wicked Is Music', the sound consolidated into the one that has gone on to conquer the world. House, disco, broken beats, funk and pop are all mixed into a heady mix of forward facing dance music.

The Early Years compilation charts their rise from of their early catalogue of ground-breaking productions.

Here is the debut EP from Manchester producers Tom Lonsboroough and Col Hamilton, known as 2 Billion Beats with the Musics Alfresco EP.


Things kick things off with the uptempo ‘The Moodymann’, a funk fuelled cut of bottom heavy laden disco house. Retro synth bass with an acidic twist, rolling house rhythms and keys create a melodic yet dancefloor orientated vibe and a slightly old school feel. 

Next up, ‘Secret Sub Disco’ journeys into more laid back disco territory with layers of melody washing over bubbling bass and relaxed rhythms to create a decidedly chilled vibe with some added in some acidic arpeggiated lines.

Ralph Myerz is a titan of Norwegian dance music and has been one of the key players in its recent golden age, to celebrate his long relationship with Paper, the album comes with an exclusive DJ Mix from Ralph, featuring an exclusive track, 'The Way - VIP Mix' by The Missing Cats.

He conquered the world in the late '90s and '00s with the Jack Herren Band before going on to work with some of the greats of hip-hop, including Snoop Dogg, Talib Kweli and George Clinton. In 2014, he won Best Electronic / Dance Album for his 'Supersonic Pulse' album, which is often noted as the Norwegian Grammys. 

Ralph has been a friend of Paper since the early days. He has remixed the catalogue and released several EPs of deep house and nu-disco, all stamped with his trademark impeccable production, twisted funk, dancefloor instincts, and Ralph's 'bon vivant'; this download features an album-only DJ mix which includes exclusive tracks, mixes and effects blended by Ralph this summer.

Flash Atkins has pulled together a crack team of musicians for Sanza Mibale Ya Bo Pemi. It is a tribute to the golden age of afro disco, when the sounds of 70s New York found their way to the continent and fused with local musical styles and rhythms. 

Felix Ngindu sings in his native Lingala language from DRC over a locked bass, congas, keys, percussion, rhythm guitar and a brass section from Haggis Horn's Atholl Ransome and Malcolm Strachan. Funk, disco, soul and jazz all blend for a a peak time jam.  

The Flash Dub strips things back to the rhythm section for heads down, dubby action and a tracky take that still packs a dance floor punch. 

 The incomparable Bosq steps up for remix duties and knocks it out the park. Layered drums and percussion give things a more latin swing before the beats break, piano enters the fray and it's a tropical funk party starter all the way. 

 The dub does the beat thing, rocking a hard groove for the dancers. Hands in the air? F**ck yeah!

Paper Talk #9 - Lindstrøm

BOM Nation's warmly received long player Àşę blended 25 years of Western electronic music into a melange of forward facing, leftfield afro futurism. They continue to push the sound with their remix EP of the album.

First up, man of the moment, Balaphonic unpacks his percussion kit and gets to work on a 4/4 house banger. Sub bass, a heavy groove, the sound of the jungle and elements of the original, including Luka Productions' rap, all tie together for a tropical underground killer cut. Not only that, but he delivers a beefed-up re-rub of the original Alabô with added percussion and tweaks for an enhanced DJ-friendly version.

BOM Nation let themselves off the leash for a heavy, hard-hitting remix of breaks, synths, dubstep and UK bass that channels the cross-pollination going on between the UK and Africa. It is the sound of the phuture that will fit perfectly into the sets of DJs like Jamz Supernova, Blk Mamba and Tash LC. 

Aykalimba takes a deeper route with a nod to early '90s house as it started splintering into jungle. An old-skool break, trippy atmospherics, rave bass and the Luka chorus take a modern step into the past.

Rounding off the EP, the Secret Soul Society does his wobbly Balearic thing. Felix Ngindu's vocal is taken into outer space with delayed synths, arpeggiated bass and all kinds of voodoo.

Oh boy, that came around quick!  One day we’re faxing giant penises to magazines and the next we’ve got kids and are on our 200th single release.  It’s been 22 years since things kicked off with Salt City Orchestra’s The Book and in the intervening years we’ve hopefully carved out our little corner in the pantheon of house music.  We’ve lived by our first “hidden” message on PAP001 “Look Forward Not Back” by keeping on keeping on but this is a chance to buy ourselves a pint.

PAP200 is three tracks from friends new and old that originally came out on a limited edition 12” Record Store Day release.  Crazy P(enis) return to the fold for the first time since 2003 and it’s good to have them back.  Last Knockers has their trademark stripped back electronic funk with Danielle Moore adding the disco fizz. There’s plenty of wonk and roll as it builds over 10 glorious minutes.

When Steve Cobby was asked what Paper meant to him he said “northern musical heritage” and we’ll take that.  He has been knocking it out the park since the early 90s and this is his debut release for the label.  Boule De Suif is a trip through funk and soul that is timeless but of it’s time; it’s what Herbie would sound like if he had grown up in Hull.

Finally Flash Atkins goes down a more conventional route with his trademark layered sound.  What starts as a straight forward deep house track evolves with trippy vocals and a chorus that brings the hairs up on the back of your neck.  Mixmag liked it so much they gave it their Disco Single of the Month.

It’s been a long time coming but 2 Billion Beats’ debut album is ready to pop and here’s the second EP to be taken from it. 

Revolutions struts its way onto the dance floor for a track that is deep, solid and aimed squarely between the eyes. It features some heavy cosmic squelches & squeaks before an arp hits to shift things up a gear to the setting marked ‘heavy”. This will take you to the stars & back whilst stopping off in the basements for a top up.

Warm Feeling is a melting pot of jacking-disco-jazz tinged house music with the silky vocals of Dieter that perfectly partners up with the soaring pads, busty Rhodes & firecracker percussion. It delivers a surefire selection for all the party jocks.

Norway’s Magnus International steps in fresh from one of the albums of the year on Prins Thomas’ Full Pupp . He takes Revolutions and straddles techno and house for a mix that is pure peak time heads down tackle for tougher floors.

Finally Italy’s DJ Steevo goes full on dance floor nu-disco shaker for his mix of Warm Feeling. He takes the B-line in to an NRG direction, thumps the drums and lets the Rhodes do it’s work whilst using synths and delayed vocals to give the track dynamics.

Paper favourite, Captain Daco has been busy in his Spanish tax haven twiddling knobs and busting beats and what twiddles and beats they are!

The Uprise is another take on the arp of I Feel Love but it's never been done so well. The familiar bass provides the backbone before it comes in at a gallop of swirling synths, rock solid kick and a call for nothing less than revolution. It's been crushing Paper dancefloors and always achieves total mayhem.

The Galáctica Mix has all the same ingredients but takes a deeper disco route with drops and an arrangement that keeps the floor chomping at the bit.

Faith takes a different direction and it's super deep house that is trippy and soulful in equal measures. Mikey Raphael provides the vocal and it's hairs on the back of your neck time.

Flash Atkins has pulled in Charlie Sinclair, singer from one of Manchester's hottest new bands, Sylvette for a collaboration that promises to be the start of something special.  The track has already been gathering heat, with Bill Brewster calling it 'one of his favourite house records of 2017' and reports of it rocking ALFOS and The Warehouse Project.

The original has a throbbing sub over clipped techy drums, muted guitar and an incessant Moog riff.  But the killer punch is Charlie Sinclair's soulful, intimate vocals that sit beautifully over the music.  The groove is locked and builds to the break where a hint of disco hits the floor before the final section brings in the bells to devastating effect.  The end result is a track that is destined to knock socks off in the coming months.  You were warned. 

Sean Johnston liked it so much he asked to do a remix and the result is everything you would expect from the Hardway Brothers.  He keeps the original elements but toughens things up with added oomph, taking it in a proto house and techno direction.  

Finally Tal M. Klein strips the track back to it's bare basics with devastating effect. Just a kick, the guitar and serious compression provide space for the tripped out vocal and a truly psychedelic deep house experience.
