What inspired you for this mix?
Melodrumma is a mix inspired by African drumming patterns and how they've been appropriated in various rituals to induce trance from the basement to bedroom to the club and the arena. This is definitely a collection of sounds that for you to meditate and spiral to but I also included a lot of gems for the music nerds who are on that free jazz, digi/afro beat, world music spectrum.
What's your current favorite self care ritual?

Favorite self care ritual currently is me and my girls collecting reparations. Get you some citrine to carry in your bag/wallet or just send that venmo/paypal request to that problematic person who's inflicted violence on you cause at the end of the day you have to perform the labor of healing and we all know self care is costly and not easily accessible. Spend their coin to facilitate your growth but be strategic and always keep receipts...  

What does home sound like to you?
This past year I spent a lot of time immersed in various bodies of water- practicing different rituals to become more familiar with myself from communicating with my ancestors through the medium of the waves or even sticking the back of my head under the water of spiritual baths listening to my heart beat in sync with my breathing. The sound of the waters have facilitated a deeper and more fluid inquiry into who I am at the core.

PJ: What is it about the full moon that makes a party better?

PK: Even if the full moon is not about the stars, but they are all aligned. With the moon shining bright in the night, we can feel all the great vibes she’s throwing at us. It’s love, joy, care, respect, ambiance and sagacité.

KAILI: This mix is short & sweet and all over the place--starts off with a Punjabi banger into some hyphy, nola bounce, Rico Nasty, and drum anthems n some more. I'm just trying to take to take people to a 25 min commute/bus-ride/pregame/bedroom vibe that has you feeling good and ready to take on the club/the day/whatever it is you gotta do.

PJ: What do you miss the most about living in NY?

K: I lived in NY when I was 19 turning 20 working for corporate amerikkka during the summer. Truthfully, the thing I miss the most is being close to my grandma and meeting up in Flushing for dim sum (even though I don't even like dim sum that much) or going over to my Aunt's house in Queens to make dumplings. Also the thunderstorms and NY summers in general. U can def miss me on that banker boy/east coast tip in general tho...

PJ: What's your go-to pre-party ritual?

K: If I'm playing the party, I'm usually chained to my laptop until about an hour beforehand in which I'll desperately find a look + put on a face + eat a pb+j while drinking tequila and listening to Ashanti. Lol. But my favored pre-party ritual is hanging w my boo eating pizza drinking something boujee and listening to my fav mix of the moment.

PAPI JUICE: Can you tell our community a little bit about yourself?

ODILE: My name is Odile, I’m a DJ and singer-songwriter based in Montreal. It’s important for me to be as involved as I can in my local scene, so I love to collaborate, make bridges between different groups in the city and be apart of projects, like the moonshine collective, that reflect my desire to create inclusive spaces that push creativity forward. I loved playing at Papi Juice with the collective, a while back and so grateful I can share this mix! 

PJ:Where do you see this mix taking people?

O: I love New York City and I feel so free when I DJ there. This mix reflects my impressions when I go out in NY. It’s something to listen to before the party to get in the right mood or after a night out, when you are having friends over but still want to turn up in a mellow way. 

PJ: It’s 6AM and you’ve just left your gig in Montreal; are you taking us for bagels or poutine?

PJ: Can you tell our community a little bit about yourself? And Batekoo?
F: I founded BATEKOO in Salvador, as a socio-cultural movement with high potential for structural transformation. I helped to develope language, identity, visual, musical and conceptual identity, expand it to 7 Brazilian states. Today I live in São Paulo and I'm the creative director and brand content manager. I like to combine my work with BATEKOO with other professions such as dj, producer, art director and styling.
And here's our Batekoo bio: 
With a mix of Brazilian funk, hip hop, and many other Afro-diasporic rhythms, Salvador-born party collective BATEKOO are creating revolutionary, rebellious spaces for marginalised communities in Brazil. They stand tall and unafraid in the midst of a political atmosphere brimming with homophobia, one that constantly attempts to frighten young LGBTQ+ and black Brazilians into silence.
Founded in late 2014, BATEKOO quickly spread beyond the clubs of Bahia and the North East of Brazil, soon becoming icons of the São Paulo party scene. Their goal has been clear from inception – to unapologetically reclaim space and centre the voices of those marginalised, whose sound and culture have been exploited, looked down upon and exoticised for decades.
“We are proud to be able to show the world that Brazil is not only what the media is focused on,” they explain. Instead, BATEKOO are creating structural change one party at a time, tackling issues of inaccessibility and offering a space of not just representation but also of community, understanding, resistance, and celebration.

PJ: Where do you see this mix taking people?
F: BATEKOO is about dancing as you please and not caring about judgments, the idea of ​​our music is to make people express themselves through their bodies and identities.

PJ: What’s your favorite thing about New York been so far?
F: My favorite part about New York I think is the whole city and how it resembles Brazil for several reasons. The black and latin cultural scene that is so strong here. The black and marginal identities of the city, the amount of non-white people in general, the way people express themselves all seem like a movie, so really in love.

PJ: What's your favorite snack after the club?
F: Pizza would be very private, I like Caribbean food, but I would like it with a little less spice hahahaha

PJ: What would be your favourite venue, past or present, to DJ at?
AZ: My dream is to go on Rihanna’s world tour and hit Jacksonville, FL (I grew up right outside of it) and Belize City, Belize (where my mom’s family is from)! 

PJ: You just DJ’d four nights in a row — what are you up to on your day off?
AZ: I kept telling everyone I pretty exclusively spent August and September trying out new recipes, watching ANTM, and making music while I wasn’t deejaying! Recently I’ve been watching lots of cute anime when I’m not deejaying though. 

PJ: Whats your favourite environment to produce music in?
AZ: I produce almost all of my music from my bedroom studio. I think there is a privacy and intimacy I can achieve there. But I think I might feel differently if I had my own studio because having a bedroom studio comes with lots of challenges.

PJ: Thoughts on deep dish pizza?
AZ: So thin crust is actually the true authentic Chicago pizza!! Most deep dish is awful and unseasoned but I really like Pequod’s, it’s definitely the deep dish that goes all the way off.

PJ: Who’s your favorite Spice Girl and why?
M: So my favorite Spice Girl was Scary Spice… but I feel like solo career wise, it would have to be Mel C. But if there’s one thing we can unanimously agree on, it’s that Baby Spice had no solo box.

PJ: Favorite snack after the club?
M: Hmm… I actually don’t… eat… because I’m a skinny legend.

PJ: Tell us about your Ultimate Spice Mix compilation!
M: So on my radio show, I had a feature where producers had one day to take a Bollywood classic and refix it into a club banger. We decided to put all the tracks out and all proceeds go to charity.

PJ: Could you date someone who doesn’t eat spicy food?
M: Actually… the thing is… I don’t date. ;P

It's week three of our quarantine mix series and we're coming at you all the way from Capetown, South Africa with River Moon (@yungdeepthroat). Let the meme king and sonic superstar wash over you as you carry at home in the kitchen or your ten step skincare routine and read on for the q&a. 

PJ: Tell us about this mix & where you want it to take people?
RM: In the words of the wise astrophysicist and leader of the free world, Saweetie, I really wanted something fun, something for the quarantine. Growing up in the clubs, it's the only place where I felt accepted and my art and music felt valued... and with the worldwide lockdown, we've seen the rise of virtual club nights hosted on Zoom and IG Live, so I wanted to transport you, the listener, back to the dancefloor. I included many sounds I love hearing in the club when I'm twist, so I hope y'all feel the love and the energy I put into it. 

PJ: What’s been the most surprising part about being in quarantine?
RM: A week before quarantine I had a total hip replacement surgery (at the age of 21 so I'm officially granny). It was the last surgery to be performed that week by the surgeon so I really got super lucky. I've been in pain and I was super depressed for months before, so I came out of hospital straight into quarantine and its been so good to me. I've watched my body heal and with that, my mind also started healing. I'm learning to love myself again. I'm essentially learning how to walk again, like a toddler. I feel reborn. With that, I started working on a full length music project to release after the lockdown. It's about dying and healing and finding yourself in an abyss and miraculously getting out of it and never wanting to end up back there again so you do anything you can to prevent it.

PJ: The night’s young in Cape Town, where are you taking us?
RM: We're starting our night with pre-drinks and the infamous Yours Truly. We start early so we can get the 50% off happy hour because we're broke and cheap as hell. After that we head to Prime, a party night hosted by my good friend Alex Michelsen. Prime is the place where all the gorls(trademark symbol) come out to dance the night away. I sort of became a resident at Prime around early 2019 and it is actually where I started DJ'ing. After Prime everyone goes to YT Loop to end the night off in a cramped club/bar that plays all the good R&B and deep house - everyone except me. I have to be back home by 1AM because I got arthiritis and my bones start hurting after midnight... 

PJ: As a curator of @patiasfantasyworld, what do you look for in a good meme?
RM: Out of all the questions, this one is the most difficult one to answer. So, I co-run my friend Patia's (patia000000) meme page with my good sis Laina (realistic_lacefront) since late last year. I think we all just have a similar sense of humor and it's pretty unexplainable and chaotic. When I post on the page, it's usually a meme that I relate to, but obviously in an exaggerated and nutty way. I love memes about food and gay sex. I don't know anything about either of those things, but both are hilarious to me.

This week's mix comes straight from our very own co-founder and resident DJ @acrhodes <3 in partnership with Ceremonia MX. Hot off the heels of e-Papi, we caught up with Adam and asked him a lil bit about his new mix.

Papi Juice: Tell us about this mix and where you want it to take people.
Adam R: When I was making this I was thinking about missing human contact and dancing with friends and expressing love. I want to remind people that this is still happening and we will get to it again .

PJ: What’s been one good thing about quarantine?
AR: Alone time! I’m introverted as HELL. But I do miss my booskies.

PJ: Your hair is constantly telling color stories. What inspires the changes? Also drop that hair care routine sis!
AR: My hair changes with the moon phases LOL. I just use it as a refresher for my spirit I think. If I’m not feeling my general vibe at the moment or somethings not right in me you’re gonna get a hair change.

PJ: Out of the 54 volumes of Papi Juice, what’s  been your favorite volume and why?
AR: Papi Juice at BOFFO Fire island performance festival was so special. Dancing with a bunch of black and brown queers on the beach was magic. Getting to know all kinds of artists I had never met before was great. I miss the beach so much!

PAPI JUICE: Tell us about this mix & where you want it to take people.
BAE BAE: You're getting a mix of my favorite genres: r&b, bounce, uk funky, house, club, hip hop, and even a gospel remix. Many remixed throwbacks. Priority #1 is that it moves you emotionally and physically. Its a combination of all sorts of moods: searching for love, finding your sensuality, experiencing loss, and remaining in touch with who you are. I hope the listeners receive the care infused into it. I hope it creates a desire to move with your friends and partners and to love on them. It's a vibe.

PJ: What’s been your favorite quarantine activity? 
BB: First of all meditation saves my life! When I wake up I sit at my mat for 20 minutes either focusing on my breath or "metta", the buddhist practice that helps to cultivate compassion. I find it to be a great way to stop myself from ruminating over and over over the past, present problems, and future worries. It helps me develop the compassion and understanding that this moment truly needs. It keeps me present. Along with this tending to my ancestor, goddess, and inner child altar. Adding fresh flowers each week. Lastly I took up gardening. I have a few plants I care for and the practice of tending to them brings me love and patience.


PJ: When did you start Negress and why? And where do you see it going?
BB: Negress started as a concept for me years ago when I formed a collective in New York called the New Negress Film Society. It was inspired by Kara Walker's use of the term. For me it became about empowering the black femmes at a moment that I felt incredibly disempowered and isolated. In recent years I created the Negress platform (@negressworld) to help give black femmes, queers, and gnc people a space that would amplify their perspectives. We host a monthly radio show on @dublab. I plan to expand Negress Media to support experimental visual art, film & video, music, and sound projects. I see Negress evolving into a spiritual platform that amplifies the divine feminine.    

PJ: Your makeup is always on point! What’s one product that’s always in your bag?
BB: Aw thank you lol! My dark lip liner probably. I use Mac in Chestnut. It gives me that 90s r&b girl feel. The heavy line accentuates my full lips and is such a throwback.

M: I want my music to make people feel something. If it makes them dance, it makes them dance. If it makes them cry, even better. Whether it touches the soul, the mind or just the feet, as long as you feel the rhythm, I’m happy.
PJ: How do you feel this time away from nightlife will impact our industry in the future?
M: I honestly think it will make everyone way more appreciative of all the people who work in the nightlife and provide entertainment that we have ALL taken for granted for the longest time. Clubbing through a screen sucks ass. You’re just drunk, half naked in your living room dancing all alone: nobody aspires to that! The folks are definitely hungry AF for a good rave. Let’s get back to normal asap pleeeease!! 
PJ: Your IG bio says “you don’t pop xanax anymore.” Can we ask why?
M: Like many other Gen Z, I went through a xanny phase that really fucked me up. Around 2016-17, benzos, Xanax more precisely, were very popular and new to the “scene”. I was hooked for a year or so and can barely tell you what was happening as chewing bars was the essential step of morning and bedtime routine. I can not pinpoint why I was so attracted to this drug, but I was and maybe still am. Although, I was young and still am, at least now I am aware that outrunning reality will not erase the pain and that it will surely catch up eventually. Yet, I would be lying if I said that numbing was not fun. I’m just glad that I got out of that dark ass downward spiral. The reason I have it in my bio is because I used to publicly embarrass myself alot (like everyone knew that I was a fiend); so I have to let everyone know that I’m not that girl anymore. I’m a different kind of mess now, a hotter mess 💅🏾

Papi Juice Mix: Messkina

For this mix, our friend @miraclestew came through with something super fun, flirty, and full of his own edits!
PJ: Tell us about this mix & where you want it to take people.
M: I wanted this mix to feel personal, so almost 75% of tracks in this mix are something I remixed, blended, or edited in some way.  The first track on the mix I blended earlier this year...I was like this is either cute or really dumb, like next level eye roll dumb!  I went with cute, and decided it would be the starting point for the mix.  Then I was like, maybe the entire mix should have no beats at all, more of an ambient vibe because I've been feeling extra moody lately for obvious reasons.  But after listening to my initial attempt, it was a bit too serious and I wasn't feeling it.  I decided to go in a different, more energetic direction that felt more Papi Juice to me.  I've been collecting a lot of baile funk tracks and ripped a lot of them apart in order to create new beats with drum samples I liked.  I also wanted to feature a lot of r&b acapellas I've been into, as well as bits and pieces from nostalgic and somewhat cheesy electronic/pop/club I used to listen to back in the day (i.e. Vengaboys, Basement Jaxx, Amber's 'Sexual').  I just released a 12 track remix album called Recover (available on my bandcamp at miraclestew.bandcamp.com!), of which some vocals and production are featured in this mix. I hope it can relate to people's emotional side, and at the same time take them out of any negative reality for a moment.
PJ: You make really amazing dance music, what do you think the power in dance music is?
M: Personally I am drawn to dance music because I enjoy movement and repetitiveness, as well as the feeling of escape it provides.  A lot of the dance music I am inspired by is about one idea that is repeated over and over that often develops over time.  This gives dance music a transportive quality for me because it makes my mind slow down, even if the music itself has a fast tempo.  I think I really grasped this concept through the work of minimalist classical composer Steve Reich.  Most of his music can be perceived as both fast and slow depending on how you listen to it. Additionally, there is a very shared emotional and physical reaction to dance music that feels instinctual.
PJ: What's your favorite part of the music production process?
M: When I am first thinking about the concept and mood for a track or project, this can be very inspiring and exciting.  But I think the best part of the process is when the work starts taking on a life of its own.  There is a point when my work feels like it wants to write itself, and that is usually a sign that things are becoming very organic. Lately I've been trying to loosen my grip over my own work, and let it take me where it wants to.  This approach has led to more experimentation and having more fun while producing.
PJ: It was your birthday recently, happy birthday! Do you think Leos get a bad rep?
M: Thank you!  I'm probably going to get a lot of flak for this because I feel in the minority when it comes to DJs and astrology, but I don't really read my horoscope ever...!  I do know enough to say that I don't feel like a Leo most of the time - they always sound so confident and willing to do anything to command a room, doesn't sound like me!  Or maybe it does and I just don't know it, or the Leo is hibernating, buried very very deep...or I am in denial lol!?  A recent friend I made here in LA is really into astrology and I'm trying to get into it...slowly...sometimes he sends me horoscopes and I'm like I just can't!

PJ: Tell us about this mix & where you want it to take people.
HQ: This mix is a lil quintessential turbo halfqueen set with all the club classics. I'm truly so desperate to be enveloped in an environment that's different from my current one, so this mix is kinda coming from that place I wanna be; somewhere far, far away but warm + familiar. There's a lot of fun etched into the waveforms so I want you to feel the joy, from me to you. Let it take you to the floor, to the twerk spot in front of your mirror, to your bed + up into space (ノ￣ー￣)ノ
PJ: How did FILTH come about and what's been the most exciting part about it?
HQ: FILTH started after my friend + close collaborator JessB felt like we weren't being provided with a space in our city that catered to all of the intersections we existed at. FILTH is a collective + clubnight that prioritizes the QTBIPOC community experience and platforms artists/djs from our community both here + worldwide. We were so inspired by all the collectives/events we'd been privileged enough to attend overseas so we wanted to organise, collaborate and bring those vibes back home. The most exciting part about it is seeing the honeys really come into themselves in the environment + take it home with them. 
PJ: So we're coming to Auckland for 1 day only, where are you taking us and most importantly what are we eating?
HQ: I'll be taking you out to Piha (magnificent black sand west coast beach), and then wining and dining y'all with some bluff oysters, a stunning cheeseboard and a pinot noir. Then I'll be dragging y'all to Filth. Bougie + filthy = duality

Papi Juice Mix: HALFQUEEN

Kicking off our fresh new design for our mixes is @khole_kardashian from Bogota, Colombia with an equally fresh and super fun mix!

PJ: Tell us about this mix & where you want it to take people.
KHK: The mix is exactly what would be playing at a Putivuelta pari at 3am. It starts with more traditional guaracha and moves onto higher BPM dark sided mutations of aleteo, bala, and circuit. All tracks are sourced from private whatsapp groups, trading music with paisa quincañeros, or my own edits. I want this mix to take people on a trip to a basement in the center of Bogotá where you don't feel comfortable setting your bag down, the bathrooms might've flooded, but it's packed wall to wall with cute people till sunrise. 

PJ: What's Putivuelta and how did it come about?
KHK: Putivuelta is a party and net label with sporadic releases. It is a project that began between Ynfynyt Scroll (heterosexual diversity), Sisterybrother, and myself having a shared vision to disrupt sterile Bogotá nightlife. A lot of parties and spaces wouldn't even let our friends enter because they weren't gay men that could pay a high cover. We often get labeled by other people as a queer, trans, swer, etc. party but tbh we're just trying to make a space for ourselves and our friends since nobody will let all of us exist in the same space on our own terms.

PJ: Can you describe the perfect wild night out in Bogota?
KHK: Bogotá is very hit or miss.... there aren't very many weird queer parties - but when they do happen they are something really really special to here. If it was a perfect weekend we'd pop into a kiki ball by House of Tupamaras, later in the night go to a v dense guaracha pari in the south, and afters with the girls in Santa Fe till a demonic hour.

PJ: Do you think Rihanna will ever make music again?
KHK: Fenty makes music?

PJ: Tell us about this mix & where you want it to take people.
J: My mix is called Nuestra celebración es revolucionaria (our celebration is revolutionary) and I wanted to create a mix which moves from ambient to really hard latinx club, to translate different feelings that you can find within maricas/queer parties. I wanted to take people to the duality of what our celebrations can be, really hard and sexual and on the other hand a more tender and vulnerable vibe.

PJ: We're obsessed with all the projects you work on outside of music, can you tell us about some of them?
I’m a trans disciplinary artist, I used to organize a queer party in Quito which was legendary/revolutionary at the time. I currently have two brands where I’m a designer. The first one it’s called @atelier.UNSX which is an up cycled post gender fashion brand I co-founded with my sister. The second one is a jewelry brand called @j0yas where I work with an artisan, I design and he builds the pieces 🙃.

PJ: What's the Quito music scene like?
The music scene in Quito was growing a lot prepandemic and right now it’s trying to survive haha but for sure you can find really good producers from here that will blow your mind away

PJ: Do you think Shakira is a natural blonde?
