PJ: Can you tell our community a little bit about yourself? And Batekoo?
F: I founded BATEKOO in Salvador, as a socio-cultural movement with high potential for structural transformation. I helped to develope language, identity, visual, musical and conceptual identity, expand it to 7 Brazilian states. Today I live in São Paulo and I'm the creative director and brand content manager. I like to combine my work with BATEKOO with other professions such as dj, producer, art director and styling.

With a mix of Brazilian funk, hip hop, and many other Afro-diasporic rhythms, Salvador-born party collective BATEKOO are creating revolutionary, rebellious spaces for marginalised communities in Brazil. They stand tall and unafraid in the midst of a political atmosphere brimming with homophobia, one that constantly attempts to frighten young LGBTQ+ and black Brazilians into silence.
Founded in late 2014, BATEKOO quickly spread beyond the clubs of Bahia and the North East of Brazil, soon becoming icons of the São Paulo party scene. Their goal has been clear from inception – to unapologetically reclaim space and centre the voices of those marginalised, whose sound and culture have been exploited, looked down upon and exoticised for decades.
“We are proud to be able to show the world that Brazil is not only what the media is focused on,” they explain. Instead, BATEKOO are creating structural change one party at a time, tackling issues of inaccessibility and offering a space of not just representation but also of community, understanding, resistance, and celebration.

PJ: Where do you see this mix taking people?
F: BATEKOO is about dancing as you please and not caring about judgments, the idea of ​​our music is to make people express themselves through their bodies and identities.

PJ: What’s your favorite thing about New York been so far?
F: My favorite part about New York I think is the whole city and how it resembles Brazil for several reasons. The black and latin cultural scene that is so strong here. The black and marginal identities of the city, the amount of non-white people in general, the way people express themselves all seem like a movie, so really in love.

PJ: What's your favorite snack after the club?
F: Pizza would be very private, I like Caribbean food, but I would like it with a little less spice hahahaha

PJ: How are you taking care of yourself during this time?
TSA: I'm staying in my house lol! i've been trying to stay sane inside my house all day, but I'm staying indoors until this is over.

PJ: What’s your favorite memory from a The Saddest Spiral party?
TSA: My favorite memory was definitely when I had @tomasadelreal perform at the spiral and we danced and drank all night long lol. It was a real special night for me.

Papi Juice Mix: The Saddest Angel

It's week three of our quarantine mix series and we're coming at you all the way from Capetown, South Africa with River Moon (@yungdeepthroat). Let the meme king and sonic superstar wash over you as you carry at home in the kitchen or your ten step skincare routine and read on for the q&a. 

PJ: Tell us about this mix & where you want it to take people?
RM: In the words of the wise astrophysicist and leader of the free world, Saweetie, I really wanted something fun, something for the quarantine. Growing up in the clubs, it's the only place where I felt accepted and my art and music felt valued... and with the worldwide lockdown, we've seen the rise of virtual club nights hosted on Zoom and IG Live, so I wanted to transport you, the listener, back to the dancefloor. I included many sounds I love hearing in the club when I'm twist, so I hope y'all feel the love and the energy I put into it. 

PJ: What’s been the most surprising part about being in quarantine?
RM: A week before quarantine I had a total hip replacement surgery (at the age of 21 so I'm officially granny). It was the last surgery to be performed that week by the surgeon so I really got super lucky. I've been in pain and I was super depressed for months before, so I came out of hospital straight into quarantine and its been so good to me. I've watched my body heal and with that, my mind also started healing. I'm learning to love myself again. I'm essentially learning how to walk again, like a toddler. I feel reborn. With that, I started working on a full length music project to release after the lockdown. It's about dying and healing and finding yourself in an abyss and miraculously getting out of it and never wanting to end up back there again so you do anything you can to prevent it.

PJ: The night’s young in Cape Town, where are you taking us?
RM: We're starting our night with pre-drinks and the infamous Yours Truly. We start early so we can get the 50% off happy hour because we're broke and cheap as hell. After that we head to Prime, a party night hosted by my good friend Alex Michelsen. Prime is the place where all the gorls(trademark symbol) come out to dance the night away. I sort of became a resident at Prime around early 2019 and it is actually where I started DJ'ing. After Prime everyone goes to YT Loop to end the night off in a cramped club/bar that plays all the good R&B and deep house - everyone except me. I have to be back home by 1AM because I got arthiritis and my bones start hurting after midnight... 

PJ: As a curator of @patiasfantasyworld, what do you look for in a good meme?
RM: Out of all the questions, this one is the most difficult one to answer. So, I co-run my friend Patia's (patia000000) meme page with my good sis Laina (realistic_lacefront) since late last year. I think we all just have a similar sense of humor and it's pretty unexplainable and chaotic. When I post on the page, it's usually a meme that I relate to, but obviously in an exaggerated and nutty way. I love memes about food and gay sex. I don't know anything about either of those things, but both are hilarious to me.

PAPI JUICE: Tell us about this mix & where you want it to take people.
BAE BAE: You're getting a mix of my favorite genres: r&b, bounce, uk funky, house, club, hip hop, and even a gospel remix. Many remixed throwbacks. Priority #1 is that it moves you emotionally and physically. Its a combination of all sorts of moods: searching for love, finding your sensuality, experiencing loss, and remaining in touch with who you are. I hope the listeners receive the care infused into it. I hope it creates a desire to move with your friends and partners and to love on them. It's a vibe.

PJ: What’s been your favorite quarantine activity? 
BB: First of all meditation saves my life! When I wake up I sit at my mat for 20 minutes either focusing on my breath or "metta", the buddhist practice that helps to cultivate compassion. I find it to be a great way to stop myself from ruminating over and over over the past, present problems, and future worries. It helps me develop the compassion and understanding that this moment truly needs. It keeps me present. Along with this tending to my ancestor, goddess, and inner child altar. Adding fresh flowers each week. Lastly I took up gardening. I have a few plants I care for and the practice of tending to them brings me love and patience.


PJ: When did you start Negress and why? And where do you see it going?
BB: Negress started as a concept for me years ago when I formed a collective in New York called the New Negress Film Society. It was inspired by Kara Walker's use of the term. For me it became about empowering the black femmes at a moment that I felt incredibly disempowered and isolated. In recent years I created the Negress platform (@negressworld) to help give black femmes, queers, and gnc people a space that would amplify their perspectives. We host a monthly radio show on @dublab. I plan to expand Negress Media to support experimental visual art, film & video, music, and sound projects. I see Negress evolving into a spiritual platform that amplifies the divine feminine.    

PJ: Your makeup is always on point! What’s one product that’s always in your bag?
BB: Aw thank you lol! My dark lip liner probably. I use Mac in Chestnut. It gives me that 90s r&b girl feel. The heavy line accentuates my full lips and is such a throwback.

Papi Juice Mix: BAE BAE

For this mix, our friend @miraclestew came through with something super fun, flirty, and full of his own edits!
PJ: Tell us about this mix & where you want it to take people.
M: I wanted this mix to feel personal, so almost 75% of tracks in this mix are something I remixed, blended, or edited in some way.  The first track on the mix I blended earlier this year...I was like this is either cute or really dumb, like next level eye roll dumb!  I went with cute, and decided it would be the starting point for the mix.  Then I was like, maybe the entire mix should have no beats at all, more of an ambient vibe because I've been feeling extra moody lately for obvious reasons.  But after listening to my initial attempt, it was a bit too serious and I wasn't feeling it.  I decided to go in a different, more energetic direction that felt more Papi Juice to me.  I've been collecting a lot of baile funk tracks and ripped a lot of them apart in order to create new beats with drum samples I liked.  I also wanted to feature a lot of r&b acapellas I've been into, as well as bits and pieces from nostalgic and somewhat cheesy electronic/pop/club I used to listen to back in the day (i.e. Vengaboys, Basement Jaxx, Amber's 'Sexual').  I just released a 12 track remix album called Recover (available on my bandcamp at miraclestew.bandcamp.com!), of which some vocals and production are featured in this mix. I hope it can relate to people's emotional side, and at the same time take them out of any negative reality for a moment.
PJ: You make really amazing dance music, what do you think the power in dance music is?
M: Personally I am drawn to dance music because I enjoy movement and repetitiveness, as well as the feeling of escape it provides.  A lot of the dance music I am inspired by is about one idea that is repeated over and over that often develops over time.  This gives dance music a transportive quality for me because it makes my mind slow down, even if the music itself has a fast tempo.  I think I really grasped this concept through the work of minimalist classical composer Steve Reich.  Most of his music can be perceived as both fast and slow depending on how you listen to it. Additionally, there is a very shared emotional and physical reaction to dance music that feels instinctual.
PJ: What's your favorite part of the music production process?
M: When I am first thinking about the concept and mood for a track or project, this can be very inspiring and exciting.  But I think the best part of the process is when the work starts taking on a life of its own.  There is a point when my work feels like it wants to write itself, and that is usually a sign that things are becoming very organic. Lately I've been trying to loosen my grip over my own work, and let it take me where it wants to.  This approach has led to more experimentation and having more fun while producing.
PJ: It was your birthday recently, happy birthday! Do you think Leos get a bad rep?
M: Thank you!  I'm probably going to get a lot of flak for this because I feel in the minority when it comes to DJs and astrology, but I don't really read my horoscope ever...!  I do know enough to say that I don't feel like a Leo most of the time - they always sound so confident and willing to do anything to command a room, doesn't sound like me!  Or maybe it does and I just don't know it, or the Leo is hibernating, buried very very deep...or I am in denial lol!?  A recent friend I made here in LA is really into astrology and I'm trying to get into it...slowly...sometimes he sends me horoscopes and I'm like I just can't!
PJ: Where can people send you or a cause you love $?
M: The Children's Defense Fund in California is helping ensure that children, particularly for children of color and those with disabilities, have a fair start at life, and I think this is so critical today. http://cdfca.org/

HQ: This mix is a lil quintessential turbo halfqueen set with all the club classics. I'm truly so desperate to be enveloped in an environment that's different from my current one, so this mix is kinda coming from that place I wanna be; somewhere far, far away but warm + familiar. There's a lot of fun etched into the waveforms so I want you to feel the joy, from me to you. PJ: How did FILTH come about and what's been the most exciting part about it?
HQ: FILTH started after my friend + close collaborator JessB felt like we weren't being provided with a space in our city that catered to all of the intersections we existed at. FILTH is a collective + clubnight that prioritizes the QTBIPOC community experience and platforms artists/djs from our community both here + worldwide. We were so inspired by all the collectives/events we'd been privileged enough to attend overseas so we wanted to organise, collaborate and bring those vibes back home. The most exciting part about it is seeing the honeys really come into themselves in the environment + take it home with them. 
PJ: So we're coming to Auckland for 1 day only, where are you taking us and most importantly what are we eating?
HQ: I'll be taking you out to Piha (magnificent black sand west coast beach), and then wining and dining y'all with some bluff oysters, a stunning cheeseboard and a pinot noir. Then I'll be dragging y'all to Filth. Bougie + filthy = duality

HQ: This is an incredibly hard question because I have a thousand dream b2bs, but at this very moment in time it'll have to be thee icon miss maya, thee @br0nz3_g0dd3ss :'''')
