Hailing from Melbourne / Naarm Surprise Chef are a band who are creating a rather large buzz across the globe as well as their own backyard Working out the College of Knowledge stable which encompasses a studio as well as the record label, and is also their DJ moniker when playing out, they have a intoxicating laid back soulful sound which encompasses the funkiest of riffs, hooks and a seriously impressive rhythm section.

Their latest EP see's them enlist the unquestionable skills of Harvey Sutherland and Masters at Work who cook up both a MAW remix and a Nuyorikan Soul remix for the package. Safe to say it's a rather brilliant release which lands on the 22nd of October via @mrbongo.

This fabled 11 minute+ version of Brazilian icon Joyce's groundbreaking "Feminina" was recorded at Columbia Studios, New York in 1977, for the as yet unreleased Natureza album. Produced, arranged and conducted by the great Claus Ogerman (Frank Sinatra, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Billie Holiday... the list goes on), Natureza would have ostensibly been Joyce's big break to international stardom, but mysteriously, it was never released. With Joyce came fellow Brazilian icon Mauricio Maestro, while Nana Vasconcelos and Tutty Moreno were already living in New York, and Ogerman employed North American jazz legends Joe Farrell, Michael Brecker, Buster Williams, Mike Manieri and a full orchestra for the sessions.

In anticipation of the monumental forthcoming Natureza album release via Far Out Recordings, this astonishing version of a true classic gets its first proper 12" vinyl release for Record Store Day 2022. In the spirit of making the release special for Record Store Day, rather than leave it as a single sided 12", Far Out boss called up Joyce to talk about the recording, recorded the conversation, and got it pressed onto the B-side.

Well it sounds like someone just got possessed by Jimmy Page and Nile Rogers at the same time. Help!

But séance fiction aside the factual history of the untravelled Bollywood horror phenomena is fully re-exhumed with this compendium in true faithful Finders Keepers style. Carefully documenting the drummy theme from the first-ever 1949 Indian ghost film this benchmark collection follows the sinister lineage as directors of bloody thrillers take chances on shuddering synopsis and haywire sonic special effects. Leading up to the inauguration of the notorious Ramsay Bros film company (whose sibling revelry in the 70s and 80s lead to the inclusion of flight-style puke bags in participating picture houses) this compilation pulls no punches and plunges the ‘B’ of Bombay into the heart of the b-movie and squirts a masala of bloody ketchup and red wine onto the sets of Bollywood’s glorious filmic musicals. Licensed exclusively from the independent Indian film music companies (revealing incidental tracks that they didn’t even know they owned) Bollywood Bloodbath is the result of avid stomach turning research via VHS tapes, chewed-up cassettes, and LPs, 12”s and 45s remastered from some of the only existing master tapes; presented on both CD and vinyl for both the hairy home listeners and daring DJs just in time for the witching season. New wave rumba disco crossover, recorded in Paris in the mid 80s. 

4 tracks spanning rumba, disco, new wave and reggae experiments from Congolese singer Albert Siassia and his group Tokobina, including two previously unreleased tracks taken from original demo tapes. 

Originally from Pointe Noire in Congo, Albert Siassia came to Paris in the early 80s as part of the Ballet Nationale du Congo and joined forces with a young French reggae group called Dread Lion – a band he re-christened “Tokobina” (Lingala for “let’s dance”). Keen to broaden their audience the group played a mixture of reggae, rumba, disco and new wave styles, often using drum machines and synths. 
They released one 12” EP, further altering the spelling of the name – “Tokobina” was phonetically anglicised to “Talk-Hoby-Night” in an unsuccessful effort to increase international sales. The record failed to make much of an impact and soon after Albert Siassia moved back to Pointe Noire to become an evangelical preacher. He passed away in 1999. 
Dancefloor sureshots Mama Africa and Pointe Noire are taken from the group’s only 12” release. In the world and Sangui are taken from demo cassettes from the archive of drummer Franck Benhamou. Sangui was originally scheduled for release on a 7” but the release was withdrawn due to a pressing fault.

Babylon Rockers #100

The concept of Paradise Bangkok was born out of looking for records. Back in 2009 DJs Maft Sai and Chris Menist pooled together their collection of obscure Reggae, African, Jazz and Thai vinyl to put on the very first Paradise Bangkok party, a place to drink, dance and enjoy the natural musical links between sounds from across the globe. Thai luk thung and molam, both popular, rural music styles were spun alongside Mulatu, Augustus Pablo, R.Burnam and Fela Kuti, and the duo ended up playing in Japan, Vietnam, Germany, London, Switzerland, Austria and France. They also co-compiled the two volumes of 'Sound of Siam' for Soundway, as well as 'Thai? Dai!' for Finders Keepers. Chris is now back in London, working as a musician and writer, whilst Maft runs the Zud RangMa HQ record store and label in Bangkok, as well as the Studio Lam bar just next door.

The Paradise Bangkok label they both run initially focussed on reissuing lost Thai classics, many of which were only ever produced in small numbers. Issued in runs of 500 only, with screen printed, hand stitched and stamped sleeves, the sought after 7s were then collated on one LP in 2013, complete with a comic illustrated by Lewis Heriz. The newly set up Studio Lam label focusses on new music coming out of Thailand.

The Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band made their live debut in the Thai capital in 2012. Drawn from different music scenes in Bangkok, the band, (initially formed to back vintage luk thung and molam vocalists who sang live at the events) consists of Kammao Perdtanon on phin (Thai lute), Sawai Kaewsombat on khaen, a type of bamboo harmonica, Piyanart Jotikasthira on bass, Phusana Treeburut on drums and Chris Menist on percussion. Before releasing any recordings the band undertook two successful tours in 2013 and 2014 which included a support slot for Damon Albarn in Berlin, stepping in at short notice for Solange Knowles at Off Festival in Poland, as well as gigs in Germany, France, Switzerland, Belgium and the Czech Republic, all to great acclaim.
