I See You In The Shrubs 12"

Contemporary singer Anna Clementi meets the Alien Alien.
Together they cross boundaries for a visionnaire timeless anthem: NO G.D.M., the cult song by German electro pioneer Gina X.
Originally released in 1979, it's a sublime portrait of the British dandy icon Quentin Crisp, one of the fathers of the queer culture.
Anna Clementi and Alien Alien dig to the heart of voodoo: summoning, obsession, hypnosis, slow ritual dance. With an unpredicted twist, which leads the scene to another level.
The dub version by Hugo Sanchez leads the track even more towards the essence of funk: obscure tribal percussions, revealing a noir soul.

House Is OK, but Oli, Janis and Homeboy never said they were exclusively a house label.
Introducing House Of Life and DGF to the world, they make a slight change in direction. This split 7” single leaves the world of 4/4 interpretations and takes the imprint to the land of “creep hop” and “trip pop”.
House Of Life is a project of Chaveli Sifre Riestra & Nikias Chryssos. They make songs about men who dance with no pants, Jesus Christ, Satan, and darkroom murderers. Their lyrics are channeled
through occult rites, internet forums, computer codes, and therapy sessions.
“Hans With No Pants” tells the story of a guy who likes to party with kids, eat cake and serve cool drinks. He lives in a house by the beach and invites guests to dance with him, but what goes on in his basement remains an unspoken mystery.
On the flip, a number from DGF, a project of Nikias & label honcho Janis, vocals by Oona von Maydell. “Greif Meine Hand” was originally written for the original soundtrack of Nikas’ short film “The Grandfather”. After it got to the 2nd place on the Intergalactic FM demo competition and got props by the likes of I-f, Rude66 and DJ TLR, we decided to give it a second chance by putting it on this lush 45.

A woozy, pulsing jam; equal parts of nervous energy and stoned groove - ‘Shrubs’ immediately received a cosign from Paris’ Les Yeux Orange and made its way into a highly respectable group of DJs' sets. Andrew Weatherall has since taken things a big step further and reworked ‘Shrubs’ into a sprawling 8 minute journey of his own, backed by live drums and deep sub-bass.

In May 2019, Lion's Drums recorded an album at a Kogis' (Kagabas*) village, in the Sierra Nevada mountain of Santa Marta in Colombia.

Kagabas are indigenous people who consider themselves to be the guardians of the Earth and are concerned by the modern world's attempts to destroy it. The mountain - in Colombia - is their home, it is quite literally a microcosm, a mirror of the planet in which every ecological zone is represented. The damaging lifestyles which stems from the capitalistic dogma are affecting their environment and from their vantage point on the mountain they can see how this is straining the rest of the planet. 

Singing is a staple feature of the Kagabas culture, it is considered as a way to connect with the environment. There are for example a song of the monkey, of the deer, snake, laughing or even death - singing is a way for the Kagabas to feel safe around these animals and concepts and to live peacefully among them without fear and without the need to chase them away. As there's no writing, music and singing are a way to pass memory, knowledge and awareness down through generations. 

The ongoing ecological disaster, the uncertainty of the current times and the temptation for many of the youths to leave the mountains for the big city life make this transmission issue all the more critical.

As we exchanged prior to my visit and while I was there, the recording and sharing of these songs was a recurring topic and we agreed to have singing at the core of this musical project. 

Lions's Drums was welcomed to spend a week within their community to record this album. I spent most of the time there with the Máma of the village (Mámas are spiritual and intellectual guides that keep the memory of the civilization) and his son Camilo, with help from Franz who has been working with the Kagabas for about 15 years now as part of the Native organization which he runs.

This album combines songs, field recordings of the village and of its surrounding nature, as well as musical compositions he made in his studio. They liked the result and approved this album to be released. Fully aware of the responsibility the Kagabas have entrusted him with. he decided to self release this album and will give all the benefits to the Nativa organization to support its fight for the replanting of trees and getting land back.

* Widely known as « Kogis », the name they were given to by the « civilised man », they actually call themselves « Kagaba ».
