"This Slumber Session mix gave me a great opportunity to make a playlist of something I would want to listen to when unwinding, or to just fall asleep to. I wanted it to be able to exist in the background, without focus, whilst at the same time having elements of detail and beauty scattered amongst the layers of sound unravelling as the mix progresses.

In some ways you can think of it as a soundtrack to a dream. There are moments of calm flowing smoothly into more abstract sections. Textures build to go from sparse emotive landscapes to darker, brooding moments of tension. I wanted it to be dynamic, taking in a variety of styles and influences, whilst giving the listener a coherent experience and painting some interesting images in their minds.

It also gave me the chance to put in a lot of unreleased tracks of mine. I make a wide variety of styles outside of my normal output, so it was great to have an outlet for some of that material. There are also a lot of field recordings I've made over the last few years throughout the mix, including some from my travels. The opening section of music features the sounds of walks in Sydney and San Francisco, which at the time was just some subconscious grabbing of sound recordings without any kind of artistic purpose - it just sounded cool at the time. It seemed fitting when I realised where the sounds were from, as the mix would have been the perfect playlist for a lot of my sleep deprived travels.

I ended up getting so involved putting together this mix that there's a lot of live tweaks of outboard reverb and delay units layered on certain tracks to try and get the sense of space I wanted to achieve and give the mix some breathing space. I find that ambient music can be incredibly beautiful and achieve the range of emotions other music can. I hope that you enjoy the musical selection and can immerse yourself in it, even with the emphasis away from the hooks and rhythms of traditional electronic dance music."

This collection of tracks represents our diverse sonic message over the years.
In the past 8 years we`ve released 33 different releases (maybe not as much as your average label but we are heavily into quality control) and want to share a selection of tracks with you for free! (ok just leave your email address and it`s yours)
13 of the 17 tracks you might know already from previous releases over the years but the other 4 are new and previously unreleased. These tracks are by Inofaith, Tangent, Nour Fawzi and SB-Six.
These last two artists (Nour Fawzi and SB-Six) are new additions to the roster and their music will see the light of day very soon.

East London dream-pop band ‘Zooz' sign to Super Fan 99 and stream debut track ‘Surf In the Storm’

It’s not often a band eats up column inches in NME and gets signed all before playing a single note live. Happily we were the label that signed London daydreamers Zooz and are thrilled to be putting out their first official release this August. 

Born out of a transatlantic romance gone wrong, writer Kieron returned from a month spent in California with a head full of songs and soon hooked up with friend Mike to form Zooz. Soon they were joined by other friends from the DIY scene and became five.

Bedroom demos and iPhone recordings quickly evolved as the five piece laid their hands on Kieron’s songs and quietly chipped away at bringing them to life. 

From their San Francisco beginnings they took on a new shape growing up in the shade of darkened east end rehearsal rooms. A month or two later ‘Surf In The Storm’ appeared anonymously online and quickly whipped up an internet storm with its brooding vocals and intense underpinning bass. With no press picture, members listed or back story, soon NME et al were asking “Who are Zooz and where did they come from?”

A debut vinyl EP release arrives this August via Brixton label Super Fan 99. In the meantime you can see the band play their very first live shows this July.

The Sixth Element: Grisfx’s EP

All five elements combined become the sixth element that is known as Elements (Godaï 五大), and from a cohesive viewpoint overlooking the five principal tracks, it turns out that Grisfx has gotten hold of a golden thread that can be pinpointed both on a per-track basis and throughout the whole EP. Technically speaking, every one of the tracks is arranged in such a way that it gives plenty of room for Trap basslines and a related lo-freq punctilio. In tandem with the floating synths, a kind of energetic stasis is created, and once this train of thought is grasped, we enter the realm of aesthetics which are themselves entirely stringent and perfectly in order as the EP progresses. This is not just a collection of songs based on the five elements, no: Elements (Godaï 五大) is ipso facto a real EP with a holistic concept, nutritious surfactants and unexpectedly lilting constituents. The beginning is a tad too apocalyptic or portentous, but I give Grisfx that, for what happens next is a journey through lactic-caproic phytotelemata and plasmatic immersions that enmesh Ambient with Vaporwave, followed by their subgenres and styles such as Space Ambient and Vaportrap. Today’s Truancy Volume comes from our favourites AKA the boys behind Bicep. We first heard of Andy Ferguson and Matt McBriar a few years ago through their very own blog Feel My Bicep, and they have been two of our top selectors ever since. Seeing the London-via-Belfast duo establish themselves as some of the most captivating DJs and producers around has been a joy to witness – the likes of “Silk” (‘11), Satisfy (‘13) and Circles (‘14) still being as popular as ever round Truants’ way. Their recent schedule also speaks volumes about their current thrive and popularity among listeners across the board, comfortably delving between house, techno and disco whilst also having plenty of time for Bollywood soundtracks, atmospheric drum and bass and new age ambient music in their downtime. Following a limited 12” for their XOYO residency and their Just EP on Aus Music, they’ve just released the mighty Dahlia EP in collaboration with fellow producer and long-time friend Hammer. Gerd Janson also recently enlisted them to contribute to his Musik For Autobahns 2 compilation, with their sublime track entitled “Carmine” and you can also look out for a track called "Closing Sequence" forthcoming on 50 Weapons as part of the label's final run of releases. 

Having carved up such a reputation for themselves, it was no wonder Bicep were asked to lead a residency at London’s XOYO over this year's summer period: they just finished their 13-week workout last Saturday, which consisted of a strong curated roster including the likes of Derrick May, The Black Madonna, Palms Trax and Space Dimension Controller. The two have an equally crazy agenda coming up: from their next Feel My Bicep night at Amsterdam Dance Event featuring the likes of Midland, Optimo and Sandrien as well as their next Australia/NZ tour.

The pair has unquestionably been responsible for some of our fondest music-related memories over the years: from sunny afternoons at Dekmantel and ZeeZout, to getting caught by surprise by means of their Dominica edit at other festivals. Their final instalment at XOYO was also one for the books – going from “Just” to Art Crime and Devilfish in proper confetti-canon style fashion. Featuring recent tracks from Mikael Seifu and Dawit Eklund to 2000 era house from Joshua Iz, we’re thrilled to share Bicep’s mix for Truants with you. Equally as uplifting as it is danceable, it is more importantly 100% Bicep vibes. We also spoke to Andy and Matt about their creative processes on both a musical and visual level, what music from beyond the dancefloor they’re currently loving, and their upcoming album.
