As summer comes to an end, this mix reflects upon the gigs Philippa Pacho played over the past months during the festival season. She wanted to present an uplifting narrative but still maintain a deepness with intrigue and colourful moments.

When done properly, combining like-minded selectors, the right environment, and a receptive, curious crowd, a back-to-back set has the potential to elevate us beyond the realms of each respective DJs individual identities. 

Find the right chemistry, and you end up with an assortment of records that complement each other really well. That’s exactly what we’ve experienced during Charlie and Topper's gig at the club this January. The mix is energetic, playful and quirky, and the result is a special session that feels much more than the sum of its parts.

Philippa Pacho is back on Bassiani airwaves for Podcast 178. The dynamic artist behind positivesource and STHLM Murder Girls knows a thing or two about setting a crowd in motion. Her shapeshifting beats and unmatched energy fast making her a household name far outside her native Sweden and more recent Berlin base. Her residency at Stockholm mainstay Under Bron is about a decade old, but there’s not even so much as a suggestion of hesitancy or weariness in her work, carrying a passion that’s infectious, and as palpable in a club as it is on screen (check out her recent sets on Hör). Her Techno really is powerful stuff, a sustained sonic onslaught, an unyielding beast, hulking and formidable but also smart. For many DJs whose sound is so heavily reliant on bass to carry forth their message, a slip into monotony wouldn’t be entirely unpredictable, but Philippa’s cunning use of supporting effects and melody keeps even a 6 hour journey like this one interesting from start to finish. This up and coming doyenne of loop Techno really is a force like no other.

It’s a tale often told: Sweden’s restrictive politics vis-à-vis raves have inadvertently created a fertile world on the fringes where many of the country’s talents have pushed their craft in an act of punkish rebellion. Having spent her teenage years collecting music (a habit inherited from a dad whose love of jazz, blues and folk left a lasting mark), Philippa Pacho discovered this hidden world of illegal gatherings, before trying her hand at spinning records and landing a residency at Stockholm’s storied Under Bron back in 2012. From Bassiani to De School to Berghain, Philippa’s still going strong a decade in; and she does more than mix tracks, she crafts stories that drive a vision of music that gets both crowds and feelings off the ground. With her ballooning raft of rave-ready bookings past and present her name is a synonym for tripped-out full-tilt techno, if you’re already a fan you know the score. Zenaari Mix 014 presents another facet of her world, it’s a dreamlike 87 minute studio mix, a trip through ambient cityscapes and appraisal of a slower, stranger side of sound, kaleidoscopic bleeps from one of techno’s leading lights.

Zenaari Mix 014 - Philippa Pacho

Modern hypnotics from a new techno star.

It's a tale as old as time: techno DJ moves to Berlin to chase a dream. Philippa Pacho is part of the latest wave of talent to tread that familiar path. But don't let that fool you. She's one of the classiest artists around—no TikTok gimmicks here.

Pacho's formative years were spent in her native Stockholm, navigating a vibrant DIY party scene that included warehouse raves and illegal parties. She eventually took up a long-standing residency at beloved local club Under Bron and the experience, as she details in this week's Q&A, sharpened her technical skills, teaching her to handle every type of set—whether opening with patience, supporting a headliner or closing with finesse. She also played with countless touring DJs, from Answer Code Request to Antony Parasole, which ultimately inspired her move to Berlin.

That relocation has firmly paid off. It's a testament to Pacho's talent that you'll find her playing pretty much every big club and festival across Europe, from Berghain and Dekmantel to FOLD and Monument (we were exhausted just looking at her upcoming listings on RA). Other recent highlights include closing out Bassiani's tenth birthday, and back-to-backs with Fadi Mohem and Sandrien. 

Pacho's RA Podcast showcases her preference for classy, hypnotic techno, striking a balance between muscle and subtle groove. Her aptitude for what makes dance floors tick is also evident on her two labels—Phorum Records and positivesource (co-run with Blue Hour)—both of which mirror her DJ style, blending intensity with delicate textures. positivesource has released several standout records, including this year's "Psycho" by BLANKA and Phil Berg's "Psyckik" (which you'll hear on this mix). 

Spanning 70 minutes, RA.980 is a window into Pacho's thoroughly modern sound (the oldest track is from 2018). And yet it retains a refined, sweeping quality. Give it a spin and you'll soon twig why she's in demand on dance floors worldwide.
