Coming back to Retreat Yourself this year, having last performed at the festival in 2019, we were taken aback with the evolution of this unique event. The energy we experienced throughout was so open and affirming and creative and we tried to reflect this in our set on the Saturday evening. 

Huge thanks to the amazing and talented crew that curated everything. The stage and sound and lighting were world class and playing to this beautiful crowd full of affirmation was just the best way to bring down the curtain on a memorable festival season.

After a long journey, The Lone Spacecowboy arrived in a dusty desert town where the sun burned mercilessly on the earth. He was looking for a few drinks to quench his thirst. At the end of one of the streets, he finally found a saloon. 

The colorful lights and cheerful laughter coming from the open doors caught his attention. With his battered hat and dirty coat, he entered cautiously.

Inside, it was a hive of colorful activity. The walls were decorated with pictures of dancing monkeys, blue jellyfish and shooting robots. The bartender, a cheerful woman with a wry smile, served drinks from glowing glasses that shone in every color of the rainbow. The Lone Spacecowboy sat down at the bar and ordered a cold beer, which he drained in one go. Then he ordered another.

While he was enjoying his second drink, he noticed a group of strange figures in the corner of the saloon. They wore dazzling costumes and seemed to be engrossed in a heated discussion. Curious, The Lone Spacecowboy approached and heard them talking about a secret treasure that was supposed to be hidden somewhere in the desert - the “stardust”. 

“The treasure is said to have incredible powers!” shouted one of the men. “It can fulfill wishes and change fate!” The Lone Spacecowboy, who had already experienced many adventures, could not resist the temptation. “Where exactly is this treasure supposed to be?” he asked. The group looked at him skeptically, but one of the men, a lanky guy with big glasses, explained: “There's an old map that leads to the treasure. It's hidden in a secret room here in the saloon!”

The Lone Spacecowboy knew he had to act. Together with the bizarre figures, he set off in search of the secret room. They searched the saloon until they finally found a hidden door behind a shelf. With a firm push, The Lone Spacecowboy opened the door and entered a dark room. There, in the middle of the room, lay the map on an old table. When he touched the map, a magical light began to spread through the room.

Curtis Newton (GrenzFrequenz // Rote Sonne // München) presents Afterhour Sounds Podcast Nr.107

In dieser Ausgabe haben wir uns den sympathischen Curtis Newton eingeladen, seines Zeichens DJ / Produzent & Veranstalter aus Leidenschaft. Alles begann 1996 in seinem kleinen Zimmer im elterlichen Haus in Mühldorf nahe der österreichischen Grenze, welches er nach und nach in ein kleines Studio verwandelte und sein Spielzeug nannten sich Synthesizer & Drumcomputer. Er hat das Handwerk also von der Pieke auf gelernt, im Fußballjargon würde man von einem klassischen Straßenfußballer sprechen. 

Wie es dann immer so ist wenn man älter wird, irgendwann wird es einem alles zu klein und man zieht hinaus in die weite Welt. In seinem Fall hieß die nächste Station München, wo er 2008 sein eigenes Label „GrenzFrequenz“ gründet und beginnt eigene Partys in den verschiedensten Locations der Stadt zu veranstalten. Mittlerweile ist er Resident im legendären Club „Rote Sonne“, in dem er auch regelmäßig selber veranstaltet. Dies führte in den letzten Jahren dazu, dass Curtis Newton derzeit in ganz Deutschland zu sehen und zu hören ist. Auch als Produzent kann Curtis mittlerweile mit Releases auf MIYAGI´s Label Rennbahn Records und dem Kölner Techno-Label Jannowitz Records bereits einige Erfolge vorweisen.  

Wir möchten uns an dieser Stelle bei unserem lieben Freund Curtis für sein brillantes Set für unsere Reihe bedanken, mit dem wir euch nun maximalste Unterhaltung wünschen.

Thomas and Julien are Dutch brothers from South of France. They propose either Hybrid DJ or live acts cutting from Jazz, House & Techno  mixing several genres while keeping this uplifting, dirty and groovy feel. 

Passionates in authentic sounds, they produce their music through field recordings. Their video concept "A Day In” translates cultures through field recordings and collaborations with local and traditional musicians. They already have concluded first collaborations with Gnawa musicians in Morocco, Huichol tribe musicians in Mexico, Icelandic choir, and musicians from Osaka, Bengalor, Fiji Island, Bangkok and more. 

With releases on Crosstown Rebels, DGTL, Sapiens, Bar 25 and their own imprint, Klassified Records, the two brothers also run the Klassified Studios, a co-creative space in Amsterdam.
