Emerging out of Montréal’s fertile underground scene, DJ and producer SIM is next to take to the stage for our Crack Mix series.

"For my Crack Mix debut, I wanted to represent what goes on in my head," explains SIM over email. "Stuck between a wonky synth line and a thundering sub-bass, I’m constantly picturing how molecules would dance."

Martyn’s music transcends the constraints of genre… 

Pick a track from his extensive back catalogue and you’ll be sure to hear influences from Drum ’n’ Bass, Garage, Detroit, Chicago or Dubstep - the latter of which Martyn was probably known best for having been influential in the evolution of the “Post-Dubstep” sound in London that was so closely connected with institutions like Plastic People and FWD>.   

This broad collection of influences has created a sound that is distinctively, Martyn, and as an extension of that, a sound that is very much associated with his own label, 3024. It has also found it’s way on to the best labels across the electronic landscape, including Ninja Tune, Warp, Hyperdub, Brainfeeder and Ostgut Ton to name a few.  

His ability as a DJ runs parallel to his achievements as a producer, having secured his place in fabric history over 10 years ago with his contribution to our fabric CD series. A perfect snapshot of a place in time with music from Kode9, Actress, Zomby, Joy Orbison and lot’s more. 

He joins us on July 30th as part of a weekend of music curated by Goldie. Which features sets from LCY, rRoxymore B2B Fiedel, Goldie B2B DJ Bone & more. Tickets and more info can be found below:

Bristol raised, London based Otik (@otikmusic) turned a lot of heads right from the off, and by now he has fully established himself as one of bass and techno's most interesting artists. His always original sounds on the likes of Keysound, Dext Recordings and Midland's Intergraded come with big kicks and curious leads that make for compelling listening. They always manage to be both physical yet emotive thanks to the ambiance around the inventive drum programming.

He manages to carry over that sense of the unknown yet the accessible into his always infectious DJ mixes. This week's podcast is a case in point: it's a meticulous piece of DJ craftsmanship that splices jungle, booming bass and skeletal UK techno together into a dark soundtrack that flails away wildly one minute then drills down to a hypnotic groove before cutting loose once more. Off-setting the dark with the light and the intense with the atmospheric in this way is a rare skill, but one that Otik has got down to a tee.
