The next release on Livity Sound’s Reverse label comes from Dayzero, a Japanese producer immersed in the deeper end of the dubstep spectrum. His appearance continues a long-term connection between underground music scenes in Bristol and Tokyo, previously crystalised in much-missed Naoki E-Jima’s Disc Shop Zero and the BS0 project. 

Dayzero’s approach on Daruma EP is steeped in the heads-down immersion of dubstep. Spring reverb splashes through ‘Ten’ and the title track’s sparse construction gets embellished by roots-minded FX processing, which nods to his 2020 release on esteemed US dub label ZamZam Sounds. With an unusual and varied palette applied to his stripped back productions, Dayzero captures the moody intensity and open-eared attitude of the early dubstep scene while leaning in on his own unique style.

Dublin-based Ambit kicks us off with Act Of Goodness, her impressive debut that skanks on a ‘08 dread-step tip. Fellow Dub PLUS ONE drops/raises the tempo for TRIAL, a stripped back halftime sub workout. Mid Air’s Huna seesaws a techno dancehall/d’n’b lurch with wild exploratory sound design in Lang. More Cowbell’s Eich also debuts with the mid-tempo party bass swagger of INDUCTION. Vancouver’s Destrata applies throbbing wubs and dramatic breaks on a smart 2-step break in Amphibian Barrier. Amsterdam’s Jasmín takes things on a more sinister route, delivering the technoid punk chug of Grumpy Cat. New York’s Sobolik revs up the gears with the playful ‘n’ bouncy hardcore rush of Deadly. WDDS sees us out with Slow Burner, a tense d’n’b roller that itches with junglist rinse-out fervour for a proper finale.

As Pugilist, Alex Dickson has a rich history of fusing multiple genres to produce unique soundscapes that occupy the collapsing space between techno, house, breakbeat, and jungle. Extracting and distilling the crucial ingredients from each one and using them to conjure up rich sonic tapestries that are as vivid as they are intoxicating. With his debut EP for Of Paradise, entitled Negative Space, Dickson pushes his sound even further, serving up a masterclass in atmospheric club chemistry, purpose-built for a post apocalyptic world.

Featuring four deeply effective cuts caught somewhere between offbeat techno, lucid breaks, and swaggering bass, Negative Space is a four-track vortex born out of heat-soaked landscapes and executed with cold vein precision.

Kouslin returns to Livity Sound with a second collection of slippery club tracks after the 2020 Vision E.P. With an emphasis on head-twisting sound design and a detailed line in percussive programming, the London-based producer continues to reach into intriguing new areas without forsaking soundsystem-ready physicality.  

The tracks which make up the Patterns E.P. stemmed from a period of personal experimentation, where Kouslin returned to making music for its therapeutic benefits rather than a fixed purpose. The loops and sketches he returned to and expanded upon for this EP bristle with originality at every turn. 

There is a continued exploration of dancehall rhythms on ‘King’, while ‘Five Four’ toys with time signatures for a jagged, fast-paced abstraction of techno. ‘Why Don’t You Don’t’ is harder to pin down thanks to its knotty beat and mutant synthesis, and ‘Michael’ flips the script further with an unexpected swerve into pearlescent melodic lead lines – the perfect demonstration of the honest and instinctive approach Kouslin took when making these tracks.
