This second selection of music for my baby daughter is dedicated to my Mediterranean cultural legacy.
From the Spanish Inquisition driving out my sepharadic ancestors, who carried with them their Ladino language sung in the Arabo-Andalusian style, to the Levantine and Greek shores merging with the Ottoman culture.
Via the classical lyricism of southern Italy melopea, landing on the port of Marseille and finally finding refuge in the hills of Provence.
One hour to try and capture these multi-secular migrations across the most beautiful sea in the world, singing of the sadness of departure contrasted with the beauty of love.

S'épiler c'est douloureux, ça prend du temps et ça coute cher. Pourtant, que ce soit à la cire, au rasoir ou à la crème dépilatoire, 80% des femmes retirent leurs poils, et ce, dès le collège. Celles qui ne le font pas sont discriminées, moquées, montrées du doigt. Pour certaines, ce sera vu comme du militantisme féministe extrémiste, pour d'autres comme une marque de négligence, voire un manque de professionnalisme au travail.

Pourquoi tant de haine pour le poil féminin ? Qu'est-ce que cela raconte en termes d’égalité entre les femmes et les hommes, de construction de genre et de rapport à la sexualité ?

Le sens du poil | Un podcast à soi (59)

The world is falling apart and there is a general feeling of hopelessness. we are watching a genocide in Gaza and the normalization of violence and horror. it's a moment of grief. This mix called ‘Cio Da Terra’ was recorded immediately after the results of the elections in portugal. the right wing and the fascists had a historical victory. the feeling was one of general sadness, anger and revolt. when i recorded this mix, i was in the middle of this hangover, navigating between different emotions. i tried to find strengh and hope, remembering my friends and all the solidarity gestures around me, all the love that we can still feel, the connection with the land and its roots. grief also means transformation. in these dark times, we need to keep remembering, celebrating and invoking the spirits of the land, the healing power of our connections, and we need to take care of each other.

i started the mix with eliane radigue, forever and always my muse, deep inspiration, she always guide me in dark and confusing times. i also chose tracks of my friends - Tiago Sousa, Fidju Kitxora, Menino da Mãe - and people that i admire. I recently discovered this beautiful song of Belita Palma, with a poem of Agostinho de Neto (important figure in the movements of decolonisation in Africa), that deeply touched my heart. I end with the Mercedes Souza version of the song ‘cio da terra’, a story about harvesting each grain of wheat and forging the miracle of bread in wheat, "knowing the earth's desires / the earth's heat, the favourable season / and fertilising the ground".
