E intanto il mare ci brillava intorno, alcune navi militari sullo sfondo. 
Un giorno, lì seduti sulla punta dell'attracco, rimanemmo in silenzio per qualche minuto. Guardavamo il riflesso del sole sulle onde salate, immaginavamo il ritmo delle correnti e quasi si potevano sentire viaggiare sulla superficie dell'acqua i sussurri delle città portuali di mari lontani. Era intensissimo sentirsi così presi da quel potere salmastro, percepirne la storia e la forza ed il mistero, che quasi ci dissociavamo e davvero nessuno parlò per un bel pezzo. Poi all'improvviso vedemmo tutti una luce strana, come un abbaglio.  Scomparve praticamente subito, ma credo che in quel momento pensammo tutti la stessa cosa :"Stella Maris!" Lo sapevamo che era lei che ci salutava: la Madonnina che protegge i naviganti, i pescatori e tutti i bambini nati vicino al mare, ed anche noi Tarantini, per sempre cullati dal suo canto e guidati dalla luce di mille fari.
