Asila Beach NYE Morning DJ Set 2022

Sylvan Silica is a freestyle format DJ set played at Ghost Beach and Parallel Frequencies parties as well as many smaller family gatherings. A collection of exceptionally intricate and powerful compositions that carried us this winter season from isolated beaches and craggy valleys to barren deserts and lush mountain groves.

Sylvan Silica DJ Set @ Ghost Beach 2023

My first produced track containing my initial experiments with synthesis, rhythm and compositional arrangement. Mostly done in the depth of the pandemic isolation in 2021/2 and solely for my pleasure and a deeper understanding of the process of music production.

It was a very insightful journey in which I was accompanied by my cat Boyo, who patiently sat in my lap for countless hours deep into the night, enduring the insufferable weird noises of a person obsessed to get a groove going and occasionally messing up my synths in the most unpredictable ways.

Finally getting around to sharing this mind bending musical journey through what I consider to be some of most cutting edge modern forest tunes intermixed with older classics that have stood the test of time and can still turn a dance floor upside down.

Sporophore Soliloquy is a deep exploration of the melodic tendencies in traditional forest composition, a study in rhythmical innovation and a celebration of contemporary sound design. 

Most importantly perhaps, it is a tribute to the scene that has served as an environment for positive growth, both personally and communally, for myself and many of the various freaky forest creatures from all corners of the world.

Sporophore Soliloquy DJ Mix for Visionary Shamanic Records 10/23

Traditionally, knucklebones were used for divination by shamans around the world. They were also used for games of luck like Astragaloi in the Mediterranean or communal pass times like Shagai Kharakh in Mongolia. The sound they make when they are thrown is crisp and unpredictable due to their irregular form and density, so knucklebones were used to make percussive elements of music too. Scholars once used them for arithmetic and counting, bridging the practical and the creative. 

For me, Knucklebones is a tribute to my musical journey and the many people who’ve filled my mind with beats, breaks, and melodies along the way. It’s a way of looking back to find inspiration for what’s to come. It is a foray into the process of writing music that is unbound by my own creative restraints and provides release to the sounds locked away in my head. Many knuckles were satisfyingly cracked while writing this one, so I hope it provides some release to you too as you listen and dance.
