1. I was sitting around one evening
When I heard the angels sing
They were just outside the door
I could hear the doorbell ring.

I went outside to greet them
I stood but not that close by
One of them called out to me
Saying, stay, don’t go inside.

2. And another called out to me
Saying, please just come and sing
But my voice had all dried up
And I couldn’t do a thing.

Again the angel called to me
Saying, come and join us here
I shuffled out into the yard
It seemed a long way there.

3. Then we turned and walked as one
We walked on into the hills
The light of evening fading fast
But I could see the daffodils.

We walked into the clearest night
The angels they did sing
I walked along with them
No longer shuffling.

4. And as we walked, the wind came up
It pushed me from behind
We moved into the old country
The stars shining so kind.

We walked into a sparkling night
We walked onwards merrily
 I felt a certain surge of light
Felt as if I was really free.

5. When at last, morning came
It seemed an age away
I looked around the country bright
Knew just what I had to say.

I went up to the nearest door
Knocked upon it then
I called out, the angels say
Come out or they’ll come in.

6. I called again, the angels say

I stood there with the rest of them
And we waited to begin.
