In 2006, my grandfather Richard Brolley passed away at the age of 81. It was through him that I came to love music. I remember riding in a car with him, listening to jazz tapes, paging through the LPs in his basement, specifically, The Beatles' 1965 album Rubber Soul (which, honestly, is mostly forgettable, in my opinion, but does include "In My Life," a song I knew he personally loved).

After returning from his wake that November, I sat down, wearing the suit I'd worn to his funeral, and began strumming through this song. At the moment, it just seemed like the right outlet for my emotions.

I decided to record it. I admit that I'm not the greatest singer on earth, and yes, I was choking back tears, but it was genuine.

It makes me sad that he never really knew me for me, that I never came out to him as trans. Still, I think he would have accepted me. I loved that man.
