2021 sees EPM hit a new milestone as the digital distribution, rights management, PR company and record label celebrates 20 years of electronic music.  In April, we announced the first part of our EPM20 celebrations - a series of three multi-artist EPs released across the summer, each focussing on a different genre.  

The first of these focussed on techno with new and exclusive tracks by Robert Hood, Ben Sims, James Ruskin and Mark Broom for release at the end of May.  We’re now ready to drop ‘EPM20 – EP 2’ which turns the spotlight on electro.  For this special EP, we’ve gathered brand new tracks by The Advent & Zein Ferreira, Carl Finlow, Detroit’s Filthiest and Modulator a.k.a. Freddie Fresh.

As all good electro-heads will know, The Advent (Cisco Ferreira) is as renowned for electro as he is for techno.  On ‘Strangeform’ he works alongside his son and rising talent, Zein to turn in pure electro-funk that’s blistering to the last beat.  Another absolute master of the scene is Carl Finlow who brings deep bass notes, carefully crafted melody and his meticulous production skills to ‘Optogenetic’.  Detroit’s Filthiest has been wowing listeners with his work for labels like Casa Voyager, Bass Agenda, Philthtrax and his own MCEC.  His track ‘Werewolf’ is the electro monster the title suggests – dark and tough Detroit-electro book-ended with a playful vocal.  The EP closes with the legendary, Freddie Fresh who after three decades is a genuine virtuoso.  Under his Modulator guise he layers beautiful retro synth stylings and sci-fi atmospherics on ‘ProMars’.

The third EP featuring four house tracks will follow in July, with the ‘EPM20’ compilation after the summer.

Adrien d’Elzius is giving his debut on Burial Soil, the title Brnsrgry (Brainsurgery) points out what to expect sound wise. Both originals will pull you deep down in a mystic dark whole, twirling you around and spit you out feeling dizzy from all those fascinating sounds.

Brnsrgry is more rave orientated, moving forward and leaving Devo going green with envy about how to whip it good.

Toxic Flood transports another energy, still scratching the worlds of Acid but way darker and mysterious. Great vocalist Miper asks: “Where will it lead?“

The first remix comes from the one and only UMWELT, needless to say, this Electro banger hits you hard with its punchy acid line and it is roaring in your face: “I’m a dance floor beast!“

Second remixer on this release is the dutch Lloyd Stellar and faithful to his dutch electro origins, he created a journey to float away into cyberspace.

1. You've thrown in many of your own edits to your mix, what inspires you when editing a track? Would you say you have a personal style that you integrate into your edits?

Making edits is a new thing for me, I just started last year because I am big fan of Italo Disco, Synthy Pop, Disco and other cheesy goldies which usually have parts that I want to take out, and some other that I want to enhance. 
90% of the time that I find edits from other DJs (mostly new ones), they either have way too big kicks or are extremely repetitive with a 3 minutes intro of the same 4 bars loops for example - worst for me is that most of the time they have both. 
Now I do my own edits, they way they work for me - I rarely add any additional production (I also don’t know how to really produce anyway lol) and keep them short while making them DJ Friendly for my live sets.

2. Theres a lovely instrumental break half an hour in that reminded me of the kind of break where the crowd aligns in a euphoric shared moment on the dancefloor. Are there any moments like these that stand out in your memory? Where and when was it?

There are many but if I have to pick three is that one time when Imad (from Paradisco too) played his first time at Sisyphos in Berlin. It was utterly magical to see your mate playing most of the tunes you usually play together for a crowd of hundred(s) - and they were losing it!

The second was in a little wooden hut (same club, 2 years earlier) that could host max 20 people and we were 30 or 40 in there (pre-covid but we’ll get there again). A guy brought a Windows 95 (you know these huge old computers) and was just playing disco tunes without transitions - everyone was losing their shit. There even was the guy from Games of Thrones, the one that got his balls cut - maybe he is still mad for that because he was the only one not smiling in there, the rest of the crowd couldn’t get over "Imagination - Music & Lights" and other classics. Simple pleasures of life!

And finally, one that stands out too was at a festival called Bucht der Träumer by what for me is the best club in Berlin "Rummels Bucht". 
They decided last minute to add a third stage on the beach, it was called the “Pablo Escobar” stage I think, but nobody could understand why, it was a bit of fail theme wise but still a nice one with palm trees and white decors.
Anyway, DJs after DJs were playing sing-along kind of songs, pure 80s Synthy Pop, some rap classic and some old disco songs, everyone was bluffed, I lost track of time and might have stayed there the whole weekend.

3. What kind of music do you listen to when you want to feel healed, at peace, and introspective?

I actually listen to binaural beats when I am in a challenging physical state, when in an emotional challenging one I would rather go for some sing along ones, some nice baseline, some warm feeling of being hugged by some techno or a nice vocal, something like Jocelyn Brown, Hypnotic Tango or some very hidden gems of past times.
My very guilty pleasure is French Pop Music from the 70s, 80s - nothing new under the sun, but god they had some nice tunes. I always have a France Gall & Claude François LP on display at home.

Fellow Frenchmen The Hacker and Commuter take their inspiration from the TV series, Chernobyl to create an imaginary soundtrack for their collaborative EP on Cultivated Electronics, which has already been on full throttle in 2021 with releases by DMX Krew, London Modular Alliance, Morphology and Maelstrom across both CE and sister label, CE Ltd.

Cultivated Electronics isn’t letting up any time soon, with this new EP from two major forces of the scene who should need no introduction, having between them released over the years on labels including Zone, Mannequin Records, Klakson, Dark Entries, Bass Agenda, Elektrofon and too many others to mention.  

Here they deliver three new punchy electro tracks that convey their love of vintage electronics and machine funk, but with a modern touch that will hit all the right notes for electro fans, with names like ‘Roentgen’ (a unit of measurement for the exposure of X-rays and gamma rays) and ‘RBMK’ (Chernobyl’s nuclear power reactor).

The EP includes the added treat of a remix by MMT-8, otherwise known as Ed Upton (DMX Krew) and label head Phil Bolland (Sync 24) who deliver an escalated reworking of ‘RBMK’.
