Sara Warner recently caught up with Brett Deubner, renowned viola soloist and professor of viola at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College New York.

Brett, who is currently accepting scores through a Featured Recording Opportunity with PARMA, recently released MOTHER EARTH on Navona Records. He joined us to discuss the environmental themes and craft behind the album, along with the collaborative drive that led to this project with Latin GRAMMY-winner pianist Allison Brewster Franzetti.

Conversation with Pianist Dmitry Ishkhanov

Composer Joseph Koykkar, described by American Record Guide as writing “music with a crystalline kind of clarity and rhythmic urgency that places him among the more exciting of contemporary composers,” presents his debut full-length release on Ravello Records DOUBLE TAKES AND TRIPLE PLAYS. Featuring works spanning a 20-year period in the composer’s career, this album exemplifies Koykkar’s practical approach to writing, dictated by the bounds and the interplay within chamber ensemble combinations, occasionally using computer-generated sounds.

As the works on this album illustrate, Koykkar pulls influences from a variety of genres, from American music styles such as popular, jazz, rock, and blues music, to the Western European concert music tradition of the last three centuries. Pieces like Keyboard Dances incorporate blues and rock themes with a raucous quality reminiscent of early boogie-woogie piano music, while Interfacing and Triple Play use electronics to enhance the keyboard’s textures. Koykkar also includes programmatic works like Streets and Bridges, which depicts imagery of specific streets and places in Milwaukee from the composer’s past including Downer Avenue, Lafayette Place, and Brady Street.

I 'keep' what I'm making/creating while I practice and learn my instrument.

Arthur Gottschalk is recipient of a number of accolades, including the Charles Ives Prize of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Special Distinction by the ASCAP Rudolph Nissim Award in 2009 for Requiem: For the Living, Gold and Silver Medals from the Global Music Awards, The American Prize in Composition in 2013 and 2014, annual awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers since 1980, and Arthur Gottschalk Day (October 16) from the City of Houston TX.
