‘Origin Part II’ is the follow-up EP to Degray’s most recent release, ‘Origin Part I’.  

Based in Barcelona, Degray is an artist that is unique in his delivery of the dream state into the world of techno. ‘Origin Part II’, offers a reflective, cosmic vibe while still being held with the depth of minimal techno beats.

‘Origin Part II’ opens the EP, getting listeners swooning with ambient vibes, all the while keeping grounded with a consistent deep beat and a layering of sound to be explored. Things warm up as ‘Elimination’ evolves with a faster BPM, yet less fluctuation in the sound keeps the song hypnotic and focused.  

Degray continues playing up the dream with ‘Outside the Machine’, as feminine vocals carry listeners onward and upward to the heavens. Slowing things down with soft, flowy harmonics, ‘Erased’ is a proper end to this ambient techno EP.

Blurring the lines between reality and dreams is a theme that Degray sees as common place in his music, blending mysterious ambience with entrancing beats for his individual sound. The four-track 'End Paradox' EP marks his sixth on Parse Audio, following up from acclaimed releases such as 'Dimensions' and 'Origins Pt. 1', which saw airplay from DJs such as Jamie Stevens, Joe Miller and techno trailblazer Enrico Sanguiliano in his BBC Radio 1 mix. While for now this Barcelona-based producer has stayed enigmatic, he is pushing his way to the forefront of techno with his new hard-hitting live sets, up-and-coming record imprint, and recognisable production style. Successfully treading the fine line between floating, emotional ambience and attention-grabbing techno beats is a tall order, but Degray treads it perfectly, resulting in a release that is as compelling as it is thoughtful.

'The Fall' opens this EP for us, delivering grinding and distorted beats that rise and fall, along with hi-hats and claps which, with the help of Degray's bouncy but pensive melody, let a chink of light into this otherwise dark and intense number. Other notes chime in as well, allowing a twinkly edge into the tune which flows perfectly over the increasingly driven and intense percussion, leading this steady track to become ever more densely layered. The title track 'End Paradox' begins with peaceful but foreboding field samples, whose crackling, rustling notes shoot suddenly into a momentous four-four beat and huge enveloping stabs of cinematic synths. The melody that takes over on top conveys a mysterious sense of urgency without becoming too insistent or aggressive, creating a bleak, eerie atmosphere. At the track's climax, melancholic notes lead us into a captivating, shuffling rhythm before finishing once more with the oppressive beats and enveloping stabs of sound.

We are then grabbed by the scruff of the neck by 'Aegis' and whisked along on an unstoppable wild ride. We begin the track surrounded by a powerful wall of sound, from which emerges a simple but powerful riff that then prompts the beats to enter the fray, giving an instant impression of how unrelenting this track is. Lighter notes dance over the top, slowly building to encompass everything before launching abck down into the propulsive beat. A lthough this track is hard, it remains melancholic, delivering an emotional pull with celestial vibes at the end. 'Fade Out' brings the EP to a close, delivering a subtle melody that climbs up and down the scales, backed up by foreboding clouds of noise that surround us with an unquestionable potential for energy. This leads straight into a conclusive vocal section, telling us before it fades into a gently ricocheting ambient melody that "the artist doesn't want to cease moving people". This comes across in a genuine way in this EP , where sounds and textures are endlessly original in conception, blending enthralling rhythms and real emotion into a hugely impactful release.

Reticent Barcelona-based producer Degray has unearthed two dusty cuts of dub-infused techno for 'Memento', the latest release on his own imprint Parse Audio. 

There is a wistful aura to these dusty recordings. Both mixes open with a warm crackle - as if Degray dug up this record from a long-forgotten box of personal treasures. 'Memento (Consciousness Mix)' kicks off proceedings with a rolling half time beat that eventually gives way to a deconstructed 2 step shuffle. Degray fuses his striking techno rhythms with evocative atmospherics through melancholic minor chords, cooing vocals, faraway synth flutters, and a withdrawn woodwind. 

The somber tone invoking longing nostalgia is maintained in 'Memento (Lost Mix)', thanks to a subtle combination of dubbed-out chords, distant hats, gentle hand percussion, and a reversed vocal that seems to be gasping for breath. Phasing chords gently swell beneath the surface, providing warmth to counter the ice-cold pads and adding depth to the muted atmospherics. At the same time, a deep kick and accented claps keep the track moving perpetually forward.

The meticulous preparations have seen him draw on powerful influences from some of the most eloquent and emotive electronic music acts, the likes of Massive Attack, Boards Of Canada and Four Tet. Paraphex's debut single 'What We Leave Behind' that is a little taster from his impending self-titled album. The label was created by Barcelona based Degray, initially to release his own music but that was only getting started. Branching out with this release, there is plenty on the horizon. Some might say that the kick drum is the necessary over-indulged ingredient in contemporary electronic music.

Paraphex flaunts his production feathers for his premiere cut, highlighting the many strings to his bow, not just heavy bass drums. The track opens with light, refreshing, synthesized sounds, which he couples with crispy spaced out hand-claps. An ethereal synth wistfully floats in the background, which accentuates the delicate vocals that sidle in slowly. It's electronica, melodic and hypnagogic.
