This issue of Particle Magazine is focused on the experiences outside of our control and how they influence and impact our lives. Mutual Identities, a talented Minneapolis live-act and prolific production duo have given us the two track EP "The Hand You Were Dealt" to explore this idea. This EP is based around two poker hands, a potentially winning hand staked on the strength of a single card (1) and a hand that is superior by the presence of two (2). Mutual Identities have lived through tragedy and surprises that have changed them and forced them to change. They both have found music to be an important outlet and refuge. And though they are both talented independent of each other (OMMNI and Coma Dose), they have found that through their close friendship and collaboration they can access things greater than their individual efforts.

Mutual Identities' Ace High (1) and Two of a Kind (2) are both deeply-grooved tracks that play-with and reward-with energy. Both are propelled by arps, the former with a stuttering funk and the latter with polyrhythmic-roll. These both capture the sustained energy that Mutual Identities command during their crowd-writhing live performances (8).

This issue also signals the shift of Particle Magazine from a Seattle to a Minneapolis based venture. In addition to the Minneapolitans Mutual Identities, Minneapolitans Alexis Rose (formerly Astrolex) and Particle Magazine's runner Xminus1 have remixes featuring an even deeper take on Ace High with a satisfying break breakdown (Alexis Rose, 6) and a bass'n'break builder-tool reimagining of Two of a Kind (Xminus1, 4). This is no way a break with Seattle . Those familiar with Seattle's scene will appreciate the distinct blown-out-fader-flying-drum-machine-driving-chaos Eve Defy re-styling of Ace High (3) and the spacious-steroed-churning-hypnotic 8circuit reconstruction of Ace High (7). Particle Magazine is thrilled to have expanded our midwestern representation (please inquire) with Chicago's Linquency, who has managed to blend sinister stabs and uplifting chords on-top of the atmosphere and groove of Two of a Kind (5).

Things outside of ourselves hold great influence over how we move through and exist in this world of ours. Hopefully we can all find collaborators to help make the experience more enriching and fruitful.
