Conflution, act of confluence, confluence, converge simultaneously to the same point, corruption of confluence.
This EP brings things that came from different places (but not distant places) that ended up flowing here in confluence.
When in doubt about the grammatical existence of the word, there is only the common feeling that they flow together.
With electric guitar tracks by Jorge Nuno, still resulting from the recordings of Derdeba [prticl 014] and ākāśa [prtcl 013]; editing, cutting and sewing by João Sousa, with tracks of Sitar and Bansuri played by him (here signing João Svayam), and still other sound relics (such as kick drum track by André Calvário, resulting from the recording takes of an a-nimal album).
Almost celebrating the desire for a quick end to the period we are going through, a disc full of detail and attention to abstraction, to the random but so mathematical union of creation, to the sounds that lead us to question the origin - even of the Universe.

You, me, the drums, and the saxophone.
The duo that dialogues. You and I who listen attentively to freedom and restraint.
Free Speech evokes freedom of expression. The confrontation, the agreement, the common thread, the controlled chaos. This is the place you and I are going to travel. This is where they traced our trip.
João Sousa and José Lencastre created a coherence of speech that hardly one of us will be able to break. We enter a place that evokes fracturing subjects such as destruction and death.
Before freedom, we have the revolution (which has nothing linear). It's bittersweet. We continue: you and me. We are the audience of a world in which freedom is ambiguous depending on the reality of each one of us. A record where the revolution is long until it comes to a short freedom.
Freedom is like a short loop. So short that leads us to Cabo Delgado and Marielle, in the relentless search for a quiet moment.
The journey between drums and saxophone intensifies. You and I: continue to breathe. We are free.
We have the freedom to feel. You and me.
With the voices of João and José we seek free speech.»

Since we're all Quarantine a lot as changed. Concerts cancelled, studio sessions cancelled, a lot of work is delayed, a lot of things get stuck. On the other side, there's the opportunity of rebirth, old projects get new clothing, simple technologies turn into wonderful music. Invited by João Sousa, this quartet born under quarantine was challanged to record their own instruments with their own phones or recording devices, to create improvised pieces as an hymn to what appear to be random, but shows up as true connection. Hernâni Faustino, João Sousa, Jorge Nuno & José Lencastre recorded their own tracks, changed ideas, proposed rhythmic figures, and through the Mix of João Sousa, an album is prepared! Behold how distance and isolation results in proximity and connection.

Desde que estamos todos em Quarentena muito mudou. Concertos foram cancelados, sessões de estúdio foram canceladas, muito trabalho foi adiado, muitas coisas ficaram presas, paradas. Por outro lado, há aqui uma oportunidade de renascimento, velhos projectos com novas roupas, tecnologias simples transformando-se em música maravilhosa. Convidados por João Sousa, este quarteto nasce em quarentena, desafiado a gravar os seus instrumentos com os seus telefones ou dispositivos de gravação, para criar peças improvisadas como um hino ao que parece ser aleatório, mas que se mostra como verdadeira conexão. Hernâni Faustino, João Sousa, Jorge Nuno & José Lencastre gravaram as suas faixas, trocaram ideias, propuseram figuras rítmicas, e através da mistura de João Sousa, um álbum nasce! Vejam como a distância e o isolamento resultam em proximidade e conexão.

If in the last album we did together we looked for the space between each of us, we now find a (almost) continuous wave that holds us in a trance, in a deep search for what exists when that space is reached by sound, by the infinite combination of sounds, of waves that circulate from our body into our instrument. 

The title of this work is inspired by a gnawa ritual, Lila or Derdeba, an ecstasy and trance ritual achieved through music, dance and sacred precepts involved in this ancestral tradition. From sunset until dawn, the drums start the trance, the women clap their hands and summon deities, the sound of the krakabas that were fused in the fire evoking transformation.

No dia 6 de Maio fiz um solo em live stream na página Covidarte, a convite da Margarida Azevedo.
As quatro peças que apresentei nesse dia ganharam uma nova vida nas palavras da Margarida, nas fotos e conceptualização deste álbum de Nuno Mangas Viegas e na masterização de Tiago Eira.
O que começou por ser uma improvisação baseada nos 4 elementos, ganhou um 5º na Margarida, e uma releitura de Viegas que encontrou neste som os ciclos de um Árvore desde a semente até ao fruto.

On May 6th I did a live stream solo on Covidarte page, invited by Margarida Azevedo.
The four pieces that I presented that day came to a new life in the words of Margarida, in the photos and conceptualization of this album by Nuno Mangas Viegas and in the mastering by Tiago Eira.
What started as an improvisation based on the 4 elements, won a 5th in Margarida, and a reinterpretation of Viegas who found in this music the cycles of a Tree, from seed to fruit.

This is new music created for a new world, the one we have after the Covid-19 pandemics – more similar to the old one than we could hope for, but certainly with some changes, either bad or good, in this last case the discovery that we only can build the future with another kind of togetherness –, played in duo by means of videoconference at the “no flights allowed” distance of Portugal (João Sousa) and Holland (Daniel Ferrer). Entirely improvised, but distancing itself from almost all of the formal aspects of the so-called “free improvisation”, this new music comes from the digestion of other previous musics, be it the deep blues tradition, the “weird folk” explorations of people like John Fahey and Robbie Basho, and the meditative music inspired by Indian ragas and other Asian references (yes, there’s some koto and shamisen allusions here and there). Never obvious and never predictable, Sousa and Ferrer’s partnership has some years and it went through a good number of transformations in the ambiguous space between free rock and free jazz, but this album is completely different from everything they played before. In such a way that you can’t label it anymore, and it doesn’t matter. When you eat some fruit, you want to taste the pulp, not the yawn. Welcome to the time after the end of the world…

Partícula began as a Podcast on webradio Stress.fm, curate by João Sousa & Tiago Eira. At the sime time both musicians started improvising with electronic music, using their live sets and computers to create live jams. Soon those jams need to be released on a label format. Partícula was born because of that by 2017.
These 3 years saw all kinds of editions, trip hop from Subasement, electronic beats by Kid, meditation music by João Sousa, harsh noise from Strigoi, electroacustic improvisation from VRILnoise.
2020 is the return of Partícula and it brings new releases, new music, free from genre, free from style.
