Since its inception in 2008, UN World Oceans Day (8 June) celebrates the ocean and its importance to the planet and our lives, while raising awareness about the many threats it faces. As the challenges to the ocean continue to grow, so does the need for novel solutions and the people driving them.

The theme of UN World Oceans Day in 2021 is the Ocean: Life and Livelihoods

1. When did you first learn to play an instrument ?
I learned to play the Violin when I was five. I used to watch my uncle play, and I think at that age I really just really enjoyed making sounds and creating music. It came easy so I continued it.


2. When choosing music, what is your preferred style?
I collect and play a lot of different music, but my selection, whether its what I listen to at home or play out for an audience, is a direct reflection of my mood and emotional state. I'm looking for music that I can wholly feel, not just hear and listen to. When I'm selecting music, I'm also looking for something I've never heard before that would surprise my audience.  Certainly subjective, but it's perfection to me.

3.Tell us about Playdate and your parties in New York
Before we started Playdate, I disliked the fact that the longer I stayed out, the better the music i heard. It was really tiring! Sometimes it was the 9am afterparties where I heard the best music and saw the best talent play. It was frustrating how inaccessible some of this music had become. So Playdate started out of a desire to make the music we loved accessible - something I could bring my Mom to and she wouldn't fall asleep. 

Now with my friends Leah Bradley and Terron Darby, we host a monthly party at a beautiful lounge in Bushwick, Lot45, and we've recently been throwing a smaller warehouse party every couple months where we can go much later and showcase more talent. The formula for these parties is simple - talent and the best sound system we can afford. And really great lighting ;)

4. How did you hear about Parties4Peace ?
Pairing music with charity work is an open opportunity, and there are very few outfits in Brooklyn doing it - I'd like to see more. Parties4Peace has been a friend and mainstay in Brooklyn's scene - We've worked with them before and looking forward to doing it again!

5. What is your passion?
My passion is sharing beauty with other people. One way I can do that is by playing music I've collected that I love and want to share. It's pretty simple :)

6. Would you like to join Parties4Peace on tour in Patagonia, Chile or onboard the Peace Boat?
Absolutely! Music is one of the greatest gifts you can give to others. It would be an honor to share that across the world and also receive the gift of music back.

7.Any last words  ... ?

Since the year 2008, Parties4Peace organizes a yearly tour in Chile to raise awareness about the joint campaign to declare Patagonia a World Heritage site with the International NGO Peace Boat and local nonprofit organization CODEFF (National Committee to Protect the Flora and Fauna of Chile).

For 2017, we are delighted to welcome Christian Voldstad from Bespoke Musik in New York City as our guest DJ for the Patagonica vol 9 DJ Tour in South America. Christian acquired his love of electronic while growing up in the UK. It wasn’t until he moved to New York, however, that he would find the sound that captured his attention and inspired him to step behind the decks himself. Since then, Christian has become a staple of the underground scene. His sophisticated taste in music earned him a residency for Bespoke Musik where he continues to explore his love of vinyl records, piano melodies and funky basslines. Together with renowned Chilean producer Pier Bucci and Vale Colvin, one of the most talented female DJs from Chile, we will travel throughout South America to exchange music and culture amongst various artists in region. Inviting artists to experience the pristine nature of Patagonia helps to raise awareness about the current climate challenges of the region and the necessity to protect the glaciers, rivers and mountains.

Peace Boat, an International NGO working to promote peace and sustainability around the world, will dock in Punta Arenas, Chile on February 7 during its current global voyage that will sail through the Patagonia fjords. As part of our longstanding commitment to helping to preserve the Patagonia region, this year we will again partner with Parties 4 Peace , MAPA - Music & Art Peace Academy and the nonprofit CODEFF on the PATAGONICA Project. This international project combines music, art and activism to work towards protecting the Chilean Patagonia region that is threatened by the exploitation of its natural resources. Peace Boat US Director, Emilie McGlone will lead the MAPA Program onboard the ship together with artists Pier Bucci and Christian Voldstad, traveling from Chile to Peru and Pier will continue on to Easter Island to deliver the Parties4Peace music project with traditional music that we recorded in 2016 during the Patagonica tour.

The 2018 PATAGONICA tour in Chile brought together artists, environmentalists and music producers from cities around the world including Tokyo, Berlin, New York and Santiago to promote a culture of peace and sustainability. Our special guests for this musical journey throughout 7 cities in Chile were Holmar and Philipp Jung (M.A.N.D.Y.), along with friends and producers in every city we visited during the tour. Thank you so much to all of our partners who support Parties 4 Peace and have donated their time and talent to make this project possible ! In collaboration with the oldest environmental nonprofit organization in Chile, CODEFF - National Committee to Protect the Flora and Fauna, we are working towards a Campaign to declare Patagonia a World Heritage Site recognized by UNESCO.

We invited Lauren to play for Parties4Peace in New York City and she joined us for our 15 Year Anniversary in Japan at Contact Tokyo.  Read below for our exclusive interview with Lauren just before our tour  : 
 
>> Parties4Peace is celebrating our 15 year anniversary!  What motivates you to play for Parties4Peace ?

Emilie McGlone's long-standing commitment to using music as a tool to initiate social change is admirable, and this is what inspires me to play for her. Whether it's in New York, Tokyo, Chile, or on the Peace Boat, she's constantly exploring new ways to bridge musical cultures, and I'm thrilled to have been invited to celebrate this milestone anniversary with her.

>> How would you say that the Music & Art Peace Academy project to educate youth can contribute to creating a culture of peace in the world ?

Learning an instrument at a young age has so many positive benefits. As an individual, it cultivates a strong work ethic & a deep sense of self worth. Playing with other musicians (orchestra, band, choir, etc) teaches you to respect & value the talent of others. More importantly, playing music exposes you to other cultures & teaches you about their role in the history of music. Realizing that you’re a part of a tradition that spans back centuries and across continents humbles you and puts your own place in the world into perspective.
 
>> What inspired you to start playing music at a young age and what inspires you now ?

Funnily enough, I only wanted to join my school’s orchestra because all my friends were joining too. I was in first grade, very curious, and wanted to be involved in as many creative group projects as humanly possible. Most of my friends quit within the first month but I had already fallen in love with being on stage & playing the violin and it soon became the most important thing in my life. I played throughout college, picking up viola (my true musical love) and piano along the way. Now I draw inspiration from different sources, from the music I hear out in Brooklyn warehouses, to subways musicians, to the fashion design projects I'm involved in, and sometimes still from the classical music I grew up with. 
 
>> Tell us about your experience in Berlin. How did it shape your musical style ?

I moved to Berlin right after I finished school, so it was a period of personal freedom, exploration, and risk-taking. I chopped off all my hair, traveled around Europe, and tried to soak up as much of the electronic music scene as I could. Experiencing the club culture in Berlin made me want to bring some of that aesthetic to Brooklyn, which was the spark I needed to move back and to seek out working with a collective like ReSolute.
 
>> What is your favorite part about playing music for the ReSolute collective in New York City ?

ReSolute events have a strong focus on cutting-edge music coupled with an avant-garde attitude, which is what I think makes them so appealing to the Brooklyn underground crowd. Being a ReSolute resident for 6 years has been hands-down what's taught me the most about DJing... how to read a room, how to build energy on the dance floor, and everything in-between. Stylistically, there's a lot of freedom as to what you can play, but you always need to be on your A Game..... The underground crowd is very discerning and expects the best!

>> You recently started playing with All Day I Dream and have released some beautiful tracks on their label, tell us about the music.

Releasing an EP on ADID was a special moment for me. It was my first full release and it spanned from the first track I had ever finished 7 years ago to my most recent work. Lee Burridge and Matt Dekay have been wonderfully supportive of me, both as a producer & a DJ. 
 
>> What does Peace mean to you ? 

 To me, Peace is respecting and loving others, which starts with respecting and loving yourself.

Parties4Peace presents Lauren Ritter (ReSolute / All Day I Dream )

Parties4Peace is excited to welcome this talented duo from New York  onboard the Peace Boat for a special presentation on the evening of July 12 when the ship is docked in Manhattan !  Stemming from a partnership with over two decades of experience behind them, Wild Dark takes on contemporary song-writing and gives it a unique, thoughtful, modern-take using a wide spectrum of electronic music to tell a story. The duo, comprised of brothers Corey & Ryan Negrin, stray from cold digital samples in favor of a warmer approach to writing music. This allows them to merge house, techno and natural vocal work into a cohesive concept that uses soulful yet charming song writing to nurture a sophisticated palate of contemporary work.

Wild Dark will be performing onboard the Peace Boat, an international non-profit organization that promotes a culture of peace and sustainability around the world on Global Voyages, visiting more than 100 countries per year.  The summer voyage of Peace Boat coincides with the United Nations forum on Sustainable Development, and Peace Boat will hold an inaugural Partnership Expo onboard on July 12, attended by UN officials, representatives, Ambassadors and partners in working for sustainable development.

This event will highlight the importance of partnerships for transformation toward resilient and sustainable societies, showcase various initiatives toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and provide a networking opportunity for attendees of the HLPF during the annual global gathering. The reception will be held onboard the ship, including an Eco-Fashion exhibit,  presentations, live music, exhibitions, cultural presentations, and more, focused on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Electronic Groove: Parties4Peace will be celebrating their 16 Year Anniversary in Tokyo, Japan – what’s in store for the lineup?

Emilie McGlone: We are excited to return to Japan at one of our favorite clubs – Contact Tokyo in Shibuya. This club has some of the best bookings in Japan for electronic music and we will be featuring Jon Charnis for his debut, Pier Bucci for a 3-hour live set in the main room, along with our longtime friends Tamaki Maruta, Shotaro Maeda, Moca, Jay Zimmermann, Koki and producer Dr. Shingo, who has played for Parties4Peace since our very first event in Tokyo back in 2002!

After our event at Contact Tokyo, we will be organizing a live stream in our favorite recording studio, DOMMUNE.com. The owner, Ukawa-san, is a fan of Pier Bucci and we organize an annual talk-event and music night there to highlight new projects with Parties4Peace with an aim to inspire others in order to work towards a more sustainable future through music and art. We also have an intimate boat party with a friend and Djs Jay Zimmermann and Ryo Tsutsui to celebrate Jon Charnis’ birthday in Japan!

EG: Jon, this is your first time traveling to Japan, what excites you most about this trip?

Jon Charnis: I can honestly say that I’ve been inspired by Japan ever since I was a little child. It probably originated from playing many Japanese video games and watching Japanese Anime. But actually, as I’m responding to this interview, I just received a flashback of me learning the old Japanese folk song ‘Sakura’ in Elementary school in America. Somehow I still know the words today! I also remember even practicing Japanese calligraphy in art class at the same school. Japan has always captured my imagination; from its timeless traditional architecture, minimalist interiors, respect for nature and zen-like spaces, etc. I am sure it has a heavy role in my love of minimalist art. I cannot wait to dive into the old and new worlds of Japan. And of course, the food!

EG: How did you learn about Parties4Peace and why are you looking forward to playing for the non-profit organization for your Tokyo debut?

Jon Charnis: I learned about Parties4Peace after meeting the wonderful founder Emilie McGlone via mutual friends. I’m a big believer in what she’s doing as I’ve held my own fundraising events in LA-based around music. Us Djs are quite privileged to get to travel the world to play records. It’s important to give back any chance we have. One of the most beautiful things about this scene is that most of us are like-minded individuals with a deep-rooted respect for unity that transcends races/nationalities/sexual orientations. And also our respect for nature and our planet. So partying for a purpose makes perfect sense in these crazy times.

EG: How do you think that music and art can help create a better world?

Jon Charnis: I always tell friends when I travel and play shows abroad how similar things are at our shows. You can feel there’s a common thread between those who lead our type of lifestyle. And music is such an inherent way to get us to speak the same language. Art forces us to think in deeper ways that tap into our intuition, the same intuition that allows us to think we’re all part of something bigger than the divisions created by politics. Collaborative events like Burning Man are showing us whats possible on a global scale.

Parties4Peace is a non-profit event production and fundraising organization that raises awareness for a variety of global initiatives through electronic music events. One particular initiative of the organization, the Patagonica tour, seeks to raise awareness about the unprotected nature in Patagonia, a region at the southernmost tip of Chile which is currently under threat by plans to exploit the area for its natural resources. Through a touring series of electronic music events and artist exchange, the Patagonica tour hopes to raise consciousness about and support the protection of one the planet’s few remaining natural treasures. This year Eric Carson from Bespoke Musik will be joining the tour along with Conoley Ospovat from Kimochi Sound and Michael Tello from PillowTalk/Touch of Class Records.

INTRODUCING ERIC CARSON :::
A born and bred Brooklyn DJ/Producer, Eric Carson is a classically trained musician who has honed a unique style from an array of influences having been immersed in the NYC underground scene since the days of Twilo and Vinyl in the late '90’s.  

Playing from the heart, his selections are deep, melodic grooves that focus on creating atmosphere and moving the dance floor. Joining the Brooklyn-based collective Bespoke Musik several years ago as a Resident, Carson has since caught the ear of world-renowned powerhouses in the electronic music scene, with one procuring him a ticket for his first Burning Man experience in 2016. 

Last year Carson made his debut at Output and the Brooklyn Mirage in New York, performed on the Robot Heart bus at Burning Man and has a number of solo and collaborative releases planned for 2019. 

INTERVIEW
1)   Tell us about your music, what do you like to play ?    

--  I tend to gravitate toward deep house and groovy, melodic techno records and my upcoming releases will also be along those lines.   My sound has been ever-evolving over time and is derived from a wide range of influences, but one constant remains which is that I select and produce music with the dance floor in mind.

2)   How did you get involved with Parties4Peace ?   

– I have been familiar with Parties4Peace for many years and have always admired their pairing of the celebration of art and music with the promotion of sustainability and protection of the planet.  I’m thrilled to be a part of that and to play on this tour!

3)   How do you think that music and art can help create a better world ?  

–  I believe it’s important for artists to use their platform to become role models and to send positive messages in order to influence change for the better on a global scale. I see it as a privilege and a gift to be able to travel and to share music that I love with different people.  It always amazes me how, as people, we can be from various cultures, backgrounds and from worlds away, and at the same time find a common thread through love for the same music. 


4)  What excites you about going to Chile for the Patagonica tour with Parties4Peace ?  

– This will be my first time in South America and I’m really looking forward to being in nature, experiencing the culture, architecture, local food and meeting some new friends in the underground music scene down there.


5) What does the word "sustainability" mean to you ?

– To me it’s changing the way we live in order to minimize our impact on the environment, now and for future generations. I feel it’s crucial that we spread the word and educate people on the subject because there’s a lot of people out there that are simply unaware of what’s really happening. If informed, millions of small changes in these people’s lifestyles would result in major shifts toward improving the health of our planet.  So in other words, instead of posting a selfie at the beach, post a picture of all the garbage washing up on it from the ocean and be conscious of what you use and where it will eventually end up!

This masterpiece by Conoley Ospovat is one of the many live sets played during our Parties4Peace tour in Chile, South America. Thank you to Kabir Engel and the Santo Remedio team for supporting us again this year during the tour with Piknic Electronik!  Conoley is a one-of-a-kind artist who we met when he was producing music in Tokyo, Japan. He later moved to Berlin to spend time in the studio with Chilean producer Pier Bucci, followed by recent trips to New York and Santiago, Chile with the Parties4Peace crew!  

During our PATAGONICA tour, Conoley played a live set that was perfectly fitting to each club, and we can't wait to see what he brings us after the tour and field recordings in Chile !

Parties4Peace invited Eric Carson from Bespoke Musik to join us on our PATAGONICA VOL 11 Tour in Chile, South America in 2019 ! We toured in 7 cities during a 10 day tour, including two days hiking in Patagonia through the glaciers and pristine mountains. Interview with Melanie Camsen by Parties4Peace

Q) Tell us about your music career and how you got started ? 

I was always interested in music, and when I was little my parents used to play music for me to sleep. Then the music began impacting different stages of my life and I started to know different bands, music styles and genres.  I never imagined I'd become a DJ. It was never in my plans, but it happened, and I'm very happy to be able to share the music I like with many people from different parts of the world. 
I have a very short career, as I started 4 years ago, and I was always interested in downtempo music.  In 2016 I traveled to Berlin, and during that trip I got very motivated with the genre and I decided to move for a while to that city to know more about the culture of music, clubs, etc. and that city convinced me that I wanted to do this. 

Q) How would you describe your music, and what inspires you to create ?

I use different sounds, from organics, ethnics, to tropicals and groovy rhythms. My music is characterized by a low bpm. Depending where I have to play, the kind of trip I can create changes. 

Q) What do you personally love about the ocean ? 

The freedom and peace you receive while you hear the sounds of the water. Theoretically the water transmits tranquility because it is one of the first sounds we hear inside our mother’s belly. 

I had the opportunity to dive some years ago and it was an amazing experience. There are not many places on this earth where u can connect 100% with your breathing and feel like you are so small inside this huge paradise. 
Having been born in a mountainous place, always seeing the ocean was a special moment. Sometimes you want what you can’t have and whenever that moment comes, it fills you with energy.

Q) This year for the United Nations World Oceans Day, the 2020 theme is "Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean". How do you think artists can contribute to supporting ocean conservation.

It doesn't matter if you are a popular artist or not, if the public is not educated and has no awareness of the environment there is not much that can be done. The world after this pandemic we are living is changing, and hopefully this can be an opportunity to wake up. I think event producers should set some environmental rules and the public should be encouraged to follow them until they realize that it is good for everybody. For example, some systems of reduction of the use of plastics in clubs and festivals, as well as some other rules to keep the places clean of waste that can affect the ocean and the environment. 

Q) Parties4Peace is a non profit organization working to promote a culture of peace through music and art -  how do you think music can have a positive impact on the world ? 

Music has always had a positive impact on the world especially in the times we are living today, I could not imagine the world surviving without music and art at this time. Besides, music is something that encompasses many branches, music allows us all to be united and connected regardless of belief, religion, color, etc.

Since its inception in 2008, UN World Oceans Day (8 June) celebrates the ocean and its importance to the planet and our lives, while raising awareness about the many threats it faces. As the challenges to the ocean continue to grow, so does the need for novel solutions and the people driving them. 

The theme of UN World Oceans Day 2020 is “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean.” Innovation – relating to the introduction of new methods, ideas, or products – is a dynamic term, and one that is fundamentally filled with hope. This year, the UN World Oceans Day celebration will take place as a virtual event. 

We invited the talented producer NHII to join us in providing a musical soundtrack for the Ocean Innovation Hub in celebration of the UN World Oceans Day. Read more to learn about his work in this exclusive interview with Parties4Peace.

Q) -  Thinking about the oceans - what do you personally love about the ocean? 

The oceans are the reason why we live. It is the source of all life. I always saw the oceans as a magical and undeniable pretty habitat for all kinds of species, yet it still carries many secrets. To score sounds to something related to oceans is a privilege. 

Q) -  This year for the United Nations World Oceans Day, the 2020 theme is "Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean". How do you think artists can contribute to supporting ocean conservation

The strength of artists is to raise awareness and bring relevant topics to a bigger audience. In many cases artists can be role models and show how to live a sustainable life even though traveling makes it hard. A plant based lifestyle is a great way to support ocean conservation as animal agriculture has a devastating impact on the oceans and the environment as a whole. Animal agricultural operations produce massive amounts of waste that pollute streams, rivers and the oceans, and run-off such as pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics and nutrients from operations producing crops to feed the massive number of farmed animals pollutes the water as well – and can even lead to ocean dead zones. Methane emissions from factory farms contribute significantly to climate change and ocean acidification.

Q) - Parties4Peace is a non profit organization working to promote a culture of peace through music and art -  how do you think music can have a positive impact on the world ? 

Music is an amplifier for emotions, and those emotions impact us as humans. We follow our feelings more than anything else. There is nothing more liberating and peaceful than a dance floor. Dancing together as one race while showing each other respect and love is causing powerful positive emotions. That is exactly why I support Parties4Peace and stand behind promoting peace through music and art.

Parties4Peace (P4P) is a non-profit event production and fundraising organization that hosts music and art events to support various global initiatives focused on education, sustainability, equality, and disaster relief.
