Artists Against War. In times of constant crises, it is mutual aid that gives meaning to humanity. With this compilation of 24 tracks, the Viennese label Tongræber wants to make a small contribution to cushion the devastating situation in Ukraine and the resulting humanitarian catastrophes. All proceeds from the compilation and the individual tracks will be donated to the organizations Mission Lifeline and Queere Nothilfe.

Thanks to all artists who have used their creativity at such short notice for this common cause.

Brussels-based producer Hypna lands on Maloca Records for Arteria. Known for his versatile output of sci-fi influenced club music on labels including Boxed, Insert and his own imprint Plasma Sources, Arteria marks Hypna’s first EP via Maloca, and a radical take on his established sound. 

Each of the 7 tracks on Arteria shifts Hypna’s hard-hitting and percussion-focused palette down into the chugging regions of 90-100BPM, where the artist explores his dancehall and southern-rap influences. This tempo range fascinates Hypna, regarding it as “a portal where so many different genres and energies meet allowing you to quickly shift from something slow and head bopping to a total different pace”. The resulting EP is a 7-track, club-scorching ride through Neptunes and Timbaland-tinged rap beats and slamming dancehall rhythms, all backed up by Hypna’s laser-fuelled percussion and rolling walls of sub-bass energy. 

Hypna also brings vocalists into the fold for the first time, with Jamaican dancehall royalty Warrior Queen on ‘Rollin Deep’ and up-and-coming Florida rapper Milli Bucks on ‘Big Bags’ helping to ground the EP in the rap beat influences the artist has injected into Arteria.

No-nonsense iron-clad drums, plunging into swampy Bass territory & folk-led percussion à la Boney M.

With a smattering of Madam X’s vocals weaved between subtle samples of Greek pop music. 

A warm-up of what’s to come from Doctor Jeep later in the year when the Brooklyn-based hyphenate will return to KAIZEN with the EP ‘Assassino’.

Black and white tones remind me of minimalistic, powerful rhythms and vibrations that move through the body.

When I made the tracks and painted the artwork, I trusted my intuition. In my mind, I saw angular, square shapes that, in combination with strong contrasts, created an image of vibration. Something hypnotic and deeply resonant. 

I wanted to fuse deep bass atmospheres and the relentless momentum of techno. Creative, percussive and unmistakably dubby. Raw and distinctive soundscapes that wake you up and pull you in, with a vibe that’s full of energy yet never loses its punch. Every element is finely tuned to maintain that mystical, percussive groove: hypnotic, dubbed-out momentum.   

I've closed the EP with a cinematic outro that I hope conveys a deep an lingering intensity. Textures in slow motion puling you inward, shaping in your mind as you slowly dissolve into meditation.

MUADEEP has also honored me with a fresh and genre-bending jersey-perspective in his remix.
